BOOK REVIEW - "The Harbinger" by Jonathan Cahn

The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycamores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars. ~Isaiah 9:10
About The Book : Is it possible...
That there exists an ancient mystery that holds the secret of America s future?
That this mystery lies behind everything from 9/11 to the collapse of the global economy?
That ancient harbingers of judgment are now manifesting in America?
That God is sending America a prophetic message of what is yet to come?
Before
its destruction as a nation, ancient Israel received nine harbingers,
prophetic omens of warning. The same nine harbingers are now manifesting
in America with immediate ramifications for end-time prophecy.
Hidden
in an ancient biblical prophecy from Isaiah, the mysteries revealed in
The Harbinger are so precise that they foretold recent American events
down to the exact days. The revelations are so specific that even the
most hardened skeptics will find it hard to dismiss or put down. It
sounds like the plot of a Hollywood thriller with one exception... IT S
REAL.
The prophetic mysteries are revealed through an intriguing
and engaging narrative the reader will find hard to put down. The
Harbinger opens with the appearance of a man burdened with a message he
has received from a mysterious figure called The Prophet. The Prophet
has given him nine seals, each containing a message about America s
future. As he tells of his encounters with The Prophet, from a
skyscraper in New York City, to a rural mountaintop, to Capitol Hill, to
Ground Zero, the mystery behind each seal is revealed. As the story
unfolds, each revelation becomes a piece in a greater puzzle the
ramifications of which will even alter the course of world history.
About The Author : Jonathan Cahn’s teachings are known for their prophetic import
and their revealing of the deep mysteries of God’s word. He leads the
Jerusalem Center / Beth Israel in Wayne, New Jersey, a worship center
made of Jew and Gentile, people of all backgrounds. He also leads Hope
of the World ministries, an international outreach dedicating to
spreading God’s word and love to all peoples. His teachings have been
heard across America and throughout the nations via television, radio,
and in personal appearances. He is known for uncovering the long hidden
riches of scripture and restoring the New Covenant message to its
original biblically Jewish context and power.
My Review : In my opinion, The Harbinger is a must-read for every Christian. Messianic Jewish Rabbi Jonathan Cahn has written this narrative novel based on his study of the ancient scripture, specifically Isaiah 9:10. The similarities between ancient Israel and modern-day American are not only eerie and uncanny, but from my point of view and God's Word, accurate. Though the book reads differently than most contemporary novels, it precisely pinpoints a warning message to us from God--a message we all need to hear and heed. It is to our detriment if we pass off the message as mere coincidence and religious fanatacism

Though I kept hearing the buzz about this novel, I read it only recently, and only after seeing the Isaiah 9:10 Judgment documentary in church. I highly encourage all Christians to watch this video as well as read the book. Our country, a supposedly Christian nation, founded on trust in God by our forefathers, is in danger. For too long, we've turned a blind eye to the atrocities of our society. Because of it, I believe we're already under God's judgment. Unless we take steps of repentance and prayer in response to God's prophetic Word, more judgment is certain to come.
I've included the videos below to give you further information not only about this book, but the message behind the book. I'll be the first to admit that the show opening and the advertisements in the videos are more than a little cheesy, but the message is there. Don't let the setting keep you from the message.
Rabbi Cahn also spoke at the 2013 Inaugural Prayer Breakfast. Here is the video from that event.

A Spirit of Complaint and Criticism
As I read through the story of God's miraculous delivery of the Israelites from abusive slavery in Egypt, I couldn't help but notice how quick these people were to complain and criticize--in spite of the awesome signs and wonders God did in their midst.
Then it dawned on me. We are no different. Had we been in the place of the ancient Israelites, our words and actions would most likely be the same. Take a look at these verses:
As Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel , and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they became very frightened; so the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord. Then they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” ~Exodus 14:10-12 (NASB)
Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; therefore it was named Marah. So the people grumbled at Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” Then he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree; and he threw it into the waters, and the waters became sweet. ~Exodus 15:22-24 (NASB)
Then they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. The whole congregation of the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The sons of Israel said to them, “Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” ~Exodus 16:1-3 (NASB)
Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by stages from the wilderness of Sin, according to the command of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” ~Exodus 17:1-3 (NASB)
Now the people became like those who complain of adversity in the hearing of the Lord; and when the Lord heard it, His anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp. ~Numbers 11:1 (NASB)
The rabble who were among them had greedy desires; and also the sons of Israel wept again and said, “Who will give us meat to eat? We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic, but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna.” ~Numbers 11:4-6 (NASB)
Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had married a Cushite woman); and they said, “Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?” And the Lord heard it. ~Numbers 12:1-2 (NASB)
Then all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night. All the sons of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron; and the whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” So they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.” ~Numbers 14:1-4 (NASB)
There was no water for the congregation, and they assembled themselves against Moses and Aaron. The people thus contended with Moses and spoke, saying, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the Lord! Why then have you brought the Lord’s assembly into this wilderness, for us and our beasts to die here? Why have you made us come up from Egypt, to bring us in to this wretched place? It is not a place of grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, nor is there water to drink.” ~Numbers 20:2-5 (NASB)
The Problems With Complaint and Criticism
It's ultimately against God. We may think we're complaining against people, but in reality it's an indication that we are dissatisfied with the details of our God-ordained life. So we look for someone to blame--maybe so we won't have to accept the fact that the negative aspects of our lives are often the consequences of our own bad decisions. We also don't often consider that God may be testing us or trying to grow us through the difficult circumstances in which we find ourselves.
It's contagious. How sad that it only takes one grumbling person to affect a whole community. Did you notice in the verses above that even Moses' siblings took up the spirit of complaint and criticism? How many times have I heard a complaint and decided to jump on board? If you've ever been to a high school sporting event, you know what I mean when I say "mob mentality." It's like an out-of-control wildfire, scorching everything and everyone in its path.
It's destructive. Though criticism spoken with truth and love can be helpful, most critical words do far more damage than they can ever help. Jesus was very specific about how to confront our brothers and sisters when there is a point of contention. It's been my experience that every time I step outside those parameters, I hurt others. Any complaint or criticism that we feel the need to voice should be bathed in much prayer before one word is ever spoken. (And on a side note, even our complaints about minor things can be destructive, because of the people involved. Extreme caution is advised!)
It's one of Satan's favorite tools. The enemy of our souls is so strategic. He knows our weaknesses and flaws. He's aware of the chinks in our armor. If he can move in the mind and tongue of even one believer, he's guaranteed a victory. No wonder New Testament writers had so much to say about unity in the church, controlling the tongue, and being constantly aware of Satan's tactics.
It brings God's discipline. In each of the scenes presented in the verses above, God was sorely displeased with His people, often to the point that He was ready to wipe them out. It must surely grieve the loving Father-heart of God when we dare to utter complaints that show contempt for Him.
How to Combat the Problem
Be aware of your tendency to complain and criticize. As individuals we are the only ones who can stop the cancer from spreading. I pray that the Lord will set a guard over my lips (Psalm 141:3) so that I don't hurt others, cause disunity among believers, and question God's goodness and sovereignty.
Pray about it first. Sometimes confrontation is necessary. But any word spoken against others should always be bathed in prayer before one word is uttered.
Love others. Here's where we often miss the mark. Our complaints and criticisms aren't spoken from a heart of love. Personally speaking, I can take ten thousand words of complaint and criticism from someone I truly believes loves me and speaks with my best interest in mind. In comparison, I balk at accepting the words of those who seem given to complaint and who never speak words of love and encouragement. I'm sure most people feel the same way.
Guard against pride. It's amazing to me how many of our problems of interaction stem back to pride and selfishness. We get upset when others are promoted over us. We often chafe at the chain of command. We don't like it when we don't get our way. Sadly, we're often envious of others and the role God has given them instead of us. None of these feelings are God-honoring, and they all bring only hurt and suffering when unleashed.
Father God, forgive our bitter complaining and grumbling when You've provided so much for our benefit. Help us to trust You completely when things looks grim and don't go our way. Lord, we're all guilty of allowing the spirit of complaint and criticism to anchor within us, and we know that spirit is not from You. We pray for the strength to control our thoughts and our tongues when we're tempted to grumble or criticize. And may we always seek to follow Your Word in our interactions with others. In Jesus' Name we pray, Amen.

Her Choice to Heal
by Sydna Masse
Nonfiction: What do 33% of American women have in common? They've experienced abortion. You
might be one of these women. Or maybe it's your friend, sister,
coworker, or the woman sitting next to you at church. Regardless,
post-abortive women are in pain, and at some point, most will
experience post-abortion syndrome (PAS), a form of post traumatic
stress disorder. But they may never talk about it. Many are silent
because they are filled with shame, grief and guilt, afraid of judgment
and condemnation. Few realize that peace is attainable through
Christ's mourning process and the knowledge that because of His grace,
they will reunite with their lost loved ones in Heaven. Her Choice to Heal
is designed to help women find a way to God's healing after this
devastating choice. Written by a post-abortive woman, it includes
testimonies of strength, healing and hope. Sydna compassionately leads
you on the difficult journey through denial, anger, and grief, to
forgiveness, redemption, and letting go. Her Choice to Heal
offers a roadmap to healing - practical suggestions, resources for
help, space to journal, with the encouragement and hope found in Christ

The Cloak
by Sally J. Ling
Historical Mystery: What if the world was able to access an ancient artifact that would
miraculously heal anyone who touched it? Would it be a blessing or a
curse? This question and more face brash, but endearing,
freelance writer Shea Baker, as he finds himself hurled headlong into a
mystery of biblical proportions in The Cloak. To some, making
this relic available to heal the masses would be an act of compassion.
However altruistic, others believe it to be a totally misguided act--one
that would instantly fling the world into theological, political,
economic and logistical chaos. What follows is a hunt for the
mysterious article from South Florida to Jerusalem by a number of
fascinating characters, each with his/her own agenda for wanting to
possess it.

economic and logistical chaos. What follows is a hunt for the
mysterious article from South Florida to Jerusalem by a number of
fascinating characters, each with his/her own agenda for wanting to
possess it.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: "Chase" by Jennie Allen

ABOUT THE BOOK : (Nashville, Tenn.) Christian women have just about worn themselves out in pursuit of good things – a
sparkling reputation, perfect church attendance, a lovely home, charming children. And yet they may
be missing the one pursuit that really matters – chasing after the heart of God.
Bible teacher Jennie Allen suggests that David may be the best role model for beginning a pursuit of
God’s heart: “Yes – David sinned and wrestled. Just like me. But he was not so concerned about
appearing godly, and he was terribly concerned about knowing God.
Jennie invites women to explore the life and psalms of David, whose dealings with God are more intimately portrayed in scripture than anyone other than Jesus Christ. Jennie’s new DVD-based
curriculum, entitled Chase: Chasing After the Heart of God (Thomas Nelson, November 2012), offers eight teaching videos alongside an interactive study guide that focus on David, “a man after God’s own heart.”
Jennie Allen holds a master’s degree in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. But it isn’t just Jennie’s education that attracts women to her Bible studies. Her deep love for women, her vulnerability and her passion for God draws them in. The unfolding power of God’s Word to change lives keeps them coming back. Jennie’s reputation as a teacher has grown enough to attract the attention of publisher Thomas Nelson, which has signed Jennie for two trade books and seven Bible study projects. The first Bible study, Stuck, and trade book, Anything, released in late 2011 and early 2012 respectively.
Thomas Nelson has been encouraged by women’s responses to Jennie’s teaching ministry. “Jennie has a unique calling to reach a new generation for the Lord. We immediately fell in love with her passion and authenticity,” says Gary Davidson, Thomas Nelson Senior Vice President and Publisher for the Bible, Reference and Curriculum Group, “and it’s exciting to see God reaching women’s hearts through Jennie’s creative and thought-provoking studies.”
Chase features eight 10-minute video-teaching sessions from Jennie, which go deep into God’s word
quickly. The videos begin the conversation by tackling real-life issues and allowing Scripture to shed
light on the pursuits that can derail her chase after God’s heart. Jennie hopes the Chase small groups
will create safe places for women to discuss their hearts’ desires.
The study includes eight video sessions, a leader’s guide, conversations cards, promotional resources
and a participant’s guide, with more available for separate purchase. The study guide includes story-driven teaching, Scripture study and interactive projects. The conversation cards help to create authentic discussion among group members. Jennie Allen’s goal for these studies is two-fold: to draw women close to God and to each other.
Thomas Nelson will support the release of Chase with online advertising, social networking efforts, a
national publicity campaign and a variety of promotional efforts targeting pastors, women’s groups and
ministry leaders.
Jennie Allen’s passion is to communicate a bigger God through writing and teaching. She serves in
ministry alongside her husband, Zac. They have four children and live in Austin, Texas.
Thomas Nelson, Inc. is the world’s largest Christian publisher. The Company provides multiple formats
of Bibles, inspirational books and digital content, with distribution of its products in more than 100
countries. Live Event Management, Inc., a Thomas Nelson company, is the nation’s leading producer of
Christian live events. Thomas Nelson is headquartered in Nashville, TN. For additional information,

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jennie Allen is a Bible teacher who is
passionate about inspiring a new generation of women to encounter the invisible
God. Raised in a Christian home, Jennie heard about God her entire life but not
until high school did she see her need for Him. Since that time she has been
teaching groups of girls and young women about her God.
Jennie studied at the University of
Arkansas for three years. She met and married Zac Allen and moved to
Tennessee where she completed her B.S. in Communications at Carson Newman
College. She and Zac later attended Dallas Theological Seminary at the
same time. Jennie graduated with a Master’s in Biblical Studies in
2005.
Thomas Nelson signed Jennie to a
multi-project contract in 2011, which includes a seven-part series of DVD-based
Bible studies and two trade books. Jennie’s DVD-based Bible studies are
uniquely relational, interactive and dig deep quickly. Her first study released in late 2011 -- Stuck: The Places We Get Stuck and the God
Who Sets Us Free. Her latest Bible
study is entitled Chase: Chasing After the Heart of God (November
2012), and it focuses on the life and psalms of David. Her first trade book, Anything: The Prayer that Unlocked My God and My Soul (early 2012)
recounts the journey into surrender that Jennie, her family, and her church
recently travelled.
Jennie’s teaching is marked by
personal authenticity and vulnerability, and she encourages women to go to
these same places as they study scripture. “I want to provide places for
women to wrestle with truth, so that we are more fully living what we know
about God, not just learning about Him. As God gets bigger to us, our lives
start to change.”
Jennie and
Zac Allen are the parents of four children: Conner, Kate, Caroline and
Cooper. They live and minister in Austin, Texas, where Zac is a pastor at
Austin Stone Community Church.

The Ways of God
by Cherie Hill
Nonfiction: Unexpectedly, we find that our faith has had a collision between high
hopes and harsh realities—life isn’t turning out like we expected. We
find ourselves questioning whether or not God is really in control . . .
because life sure isn’t. Though He claims to be “all we need,”
we’re just not exactly sure we believe that. In our fight of faith,
we’re convinced that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts—as hard
as we try, we can’t figure God out. And although His ways may be higher,
they certainly don’t seem better—we made plans for our lives, but God
is directing our steps and taking us places we never wanted to go. It
becomes clear that God has brought us to a place in life where faith is
no longer an option or a luxury, it’s a necessity— He’s brought us to
our knees, so that we have nowhere to look, but up. In our hopelessness,
we find God teaching us to trust Him, when there is no evidence that we
should. “The Ways of God” takes your faith to the next level.
You’ll come to understand that although you don’t know where your life
is headed, God does. You’ll grasp that when you can’t know every detail
of His will, you can trust it.

Writer Wednesday: Smelly Words
For a writer, words are our art medium. In stead of clays and paints, we use words.
In the course of a work of fiction as long as a novel, it grows increasingly difficult to express common everyday occurrences with fresh language, so I thought it would be beneficial for all us writers to create a list of words that describe smell, odor, scent, aroma, stench, whiff, etc.
Here are the words I've come up with, but PLEASE feel free to share any others you can thing of in the comments below. (NOTE: As I typed these in, I realized that some of these words can be used to describe more than just smells, but they work for smell, so I included them...)

Be-Happy-Tudes #8 - Persecuted for Right-Standing With God
Blessed and happy and enviably fortunate and spiritually prosperous (in the state in which the born-again child of God enjoys and finds satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, regardless of his outward conditions) are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake (for being and doing right), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven! Blessed (happy, to be envied, and spiritually prosperous—with life-joy and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation, regardless of your outward conditions) are you when people revile you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things against you falsely on My account. Be glad and supremely joyful, for your reward in heaven is great (strong and intense), for in this same way people persecuted the prophets who were before you. ~Matthew 5:10-12 (AMP)
Interestingly enough, Jesus seems to take off on a tangent here. I can't help but wonder if He understood what tough times awaited those who chose to follow Him. I hear Him reiterating His blessing in this passage, don't you?
In America, Christians are just now beginning to understand the tiniest fringes of persecution. Our society has quickly morphed into a "tolerance-for-everything-and-everybody-except-Christians" situation. And I believe it's only going to get worse.
But that's okay. Really it is. Because a persecuted church is made up of people who staunchly believe in the tenets of their faith regardless of opposition. The church at the moment is lazy, asleep, apathetic, and satisfied. Persecution will shake us from those death clutches!
They took his (Gamaliel's) advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them. So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name. And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ. ~Acts 5:40-42
Though we don't fully understand it, it is a high honor and privilege to suffer for the name of Christ. The kingdom of Heaven and a great reward exists for those who experience persecution for their relationship with God's Son.
Lord God, we confess that we've only experienced the tip of the iceberg when it comes to persecution, especially compared to so many countries where execution and imprisonment awaits those who claim Your name. Forgive us, Lord, for sometimes cratering to the crowd rather than taking a stand for our convictions. Make us bold witnesses for you! May we gladly endure persecution for Your name's sake, fully aware of all You did for us to redeem us back from sin and death. May we make You proud. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
