Good Ground
by Tracy Winegar
Fiction: Devastated after the sudden death of his cherished wife during
childbirth in the fall of 1908, Jim Hooper loses the will to continue.
But God plants the seeds of hope, and a new life begins to take root
following the unconventional adoption of Ellis, an orphan baby. As a
result of Jim's love, nurturing, and care, Ellis grows into a fine man,
the spitting image--inwardly--of his daddy.
Decades later tragedy
strikes again, this time for Ellis, and he finds his life turned
completely upside-down after rescuing a young woman, Clairey, from a
dangerous blizzard and an even more threatening existence. If their
relationship ever stands a chance at thriving, it will have to survive
ghosts from their respective pasts, endure the many hardships of running
a tobacco farm in the rural Tennessee mountains, and Ellis will finally
have to face the truth of his controversial origins.

Principles
by Gospel Fellowships
Nonfiction: The Scriptures declare that the Gospel of the kingdom will be preached
in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will
come. This preaching and spreading of the Gospel will be done not by the
ingenuity of men, but by the working of the Spirit of God. Do you want
to be involved with God's work at the end of the age? God uses the
simple to confound the wise. His ways are not our ways. We need revival
in our countries like what we see in the underground house Churches in
China. May God teach, gather, and raise a remnant for His glory.
Learn the following from this volume:
-Prepare for coming persecution in non-persecuted countries.
-Learn Principles of how to gather as the Church from the Book of Acts and current underground Churches.
-Access resources that will help your gathering or house Church meeting.
-Experience personal revival and the Spirit's empowerment.
From the Foreword:
The
time is now. Count the cost. You will be persecuted, tested, and tried.
You will be misunderstood, hated by the world, and sometimes hated even
by the members of your own household. There will be tears, heartache,
tribulation, suffering and pain. But, you will be living for the One who
is worthy of all, and whose eternal kingdom cannot be shaken nor ever
fade away. You will have the privilege of serving the King of kings and
the Lord of all lords. Moreover, you will one day have the awesome
indescribable experience of seeing His glorious face and hearing Him
call you by name as His own.

Worldly Thinking--More Than What You Think It Is

I subscribe to In Touch, a free devotional magazine put out by the InTouch Ministry of Dr. Charles Stanley, and my thoughts about worldliness have been recently challenged through this helpful and godly devotional guide.
If you're like me, you might consider worldly thinking as centered around materialism, greed, drunkeness, or sexual perversion, but after a closer look at scripture, it really goes so much deeper, finding its roots in selfish pride.
Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth. This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. ~James 3:13-18 (NASB)
When I read this passage (though I've read it many times before), the words "bitter jealousy and selfish ambition" literally jumped off the page at me. Then my heart cratered as I read that this sort of wisdom doesn't come from God but from Satan, the world, and ourselves. In the following passage, James goes on to compare this sort of thinking to spiritual adultery.
You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose: “He jealously desires the Spirit which He has made to dwell in us”? But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ~James 4:4-8 (NASB)
Paul addressed worldly thinking in his epistles as well.
And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men?....Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, “He is the one who catches the wise in their craftiness”; and again, “The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are useless.” ~1 Corinthians 3:1-3, 18-20 (NASB)
As God's Word convicted me of my own worldly thinking, I realized in horror how this fleshly attitude among God's people is so pervasive, and must surely leave a negative impact on our world. Since this thinking has its base in pride and selfishness, we must often come across to the world as self-righteous folks with a major superiority complex, looking down our spiritual noses at unbelievers as "less than".
To model Christ and reach out to the "ones" (Luke 15), brothers and sisters, we cannot allow this type of thinking to have any place in our lives. Instead we must...
Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. ~Philippians 2:5-8 (NASB)
No wonder Christ tells us that we must deny ourselves and daily take up our cross. My prayer for all of us, is that the humble and selfless attitude of Christ becomes our own.
Lord Jesus, I stand convicted of worldly thinking. It's so easy to think that because I profess You as Savior, that I've "arrived," that I've "made it." But Your Word shows me that sort of arrogant thinking has no place in Your Kingdom, and instead comes straight from the evil one, the world, and my old sin nature. Forgive me, Father. Help me to daily shed the natural man and self, pick up my cross, and follow Your example of humility and love. In Your precious name I pray, Amen.

The Beloved Daughter
by Alana Terry
Fiction: In a small North Korean village, a young girl struggles to survive. But
it is her father's faith, not the famine of North Hamyong Province, that
most threatens Chung-Cha's well-being. Is Chung-Cha's father right to
be such a vocal believer? Or is he a fool to bring danger on the head of
his only daughter? Chung-Cha is only a girl of twelve and is too young
to answer such questions. Yet she is not too young to face a life of
imprisonment and forced labor. Her crime? Being the daughter of a
political traitor. The Beloved Daughter follows Chung-Cha into
one of the most notorious prison camps of the contemporary free world.
Will Chung-Cha survive the horrors of Camp 22? And if she does survive,
will her faith remain intact? "The Beloved Daughter" is Alana Terry's

Sifted
by Rick Lawrence
Nonfiction: Discouraged by life’s difficulties—both life-shifting catastrophes and
the drip-drip-drip of daily trouble? Dissatisfied with the same old pat
answers about God’s role in our hard times? Rick Lawrence offers fresh
biblical perspective based on a single Scripture snapshot in Luke
22:31-32. Jesus tells Peter he’s about to be “sifted like wheat”—shaken
hard, beaten, and agitated until he practically falls apart. Satan’s
going to do it. And Jesus is going to allow it, in the interest of
showing Peter who he really is. Lawrence uses the simple agrarian
metaphor of sifting as a jumping-off point for a rigorously honest,
deeply challenging, yet powerfully comforting exploration of the trials
that beat us down, the good God who allows our troubles, and the
incredible beauty the process of sifting can reveal in us.

Trophy Child
bu Ted Cunningham
Fiction: Written for every mom who helps too much with homework just to
impress the teacher and every dad who takes credit for his daughter’s
soccer success, Trophy Child will give parents the encouragement they need to nurture their kids into who God created them to be.
Our
culture’s obsession with achievement often leads parents to form
expectations for their kids based on the world’s standards, not on the
Bible. As a result, their kids feel they never measure up.
Trophy Child will
help modern Christian parents create a home where children find success
in following their heavenly Father’s leading for them—and readers know
the joy of seeing their children embrace their full potential as
children of God.

A Promise to Remember
by Kathryn Cushman
Fiction: When a car accident kills two teens from opposite sides of the tracks,
the aftermath threatens to tear a community apart. On one side, Melanie
Johnston--a grieving single mother--is convinced her son will be
forgotten. On the other is Andie Phelps, a reserved woman who retreats
even further into herself with grief.
Readers' emotions are torn
between these two sympathetic characters as each fights her way through
grief and pain--sometimes wisely and sometimes with choices that have
the power to divide family, church, and even their small, sea-side town.

Matters of the Heart

When I was pregnant with our second son, I remember thinking: "How will I ever love this child as much as I love our oldest son?" I needn't have feared, because my capacity to love grew. At first sight, I loved our second child as much as the first.

Our hearts have the capacity for great love. Unfortunately, they also have the capacity for being small and selfish.
Throughout God's Word we see many verses that deal with our hearts. Biblically speaking, the heart is the seat of emotion, will, and thought--the essence of who we are. No wonder God has so much to say about the human heart.
God Searches Our Hearts
"And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever." ~1 Chronicles 28:9
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” ~1 Samuel 16:7
Our Hearts Lean Toward Evil
The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done." ~Genesis 8:21
For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. ~Matthew 15:19
Our Hearts Are Deceitful and Beyond Our Full Comprehension
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? ~Jeremiah 17:9
APPLICATION :
Guard Your Heart - Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. ~Proverbs 4:23
Believing Hearts Bring Justification - For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. ~Romans 10:10
God's Love Enters Our Hearts Through His Spirit - And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. ~Romans 5:5
God's Incomprehensible Peace Guards our Hearts When We Pray - And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. ~Philippians 4:7
"The widest thing in the universe is not space; it is the potential capacity of the human heart. Being made in the image of God, it is capable of almost unlimited extension in all directions. And one of the world's greatest tragedies is that we allow our hearts to shrink until there is room in them for little besides ourselves." ~A.W. Tozer
Heavenly Father, we praise You for making us in Your image, giving our hearts the capacity for unfathomable love. But, Lord, we recognize that what Your Word says about our hearts is also true. The natural inclination of our hearts is toward evil. Our hearts are deceitful and wicked. With the psalmist we cry out, "May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." Thank You for pouring Your love into our hearts through Your Holy Spirit. Help us to guard our hearts diligently and pray for Your peace which builds an impenetrable fortress around our hearts. Thank You especially for Jesus. In His name we pray, Amen.

Closer Still
by Scott Evans
Nonfiction: For me and for many people in the Western world, the God of Christianity
has been portrayed as an old man in the sky with a stick waiting to
punish those who enjoy life and the idea we've been given of holiness is
a lifestyle of repression and self-denial in the hopes that one day we
can get wings, sit on the clouds and sing songs for all eternity about a
God that they're secretly terrified of.
But what if that's
because Christianity has lost its way? What if holiness is actually
about wholeness? What if Christianity actually answers the question that
so many of us are asking ... 'What does it mean to be human?'

In Christ Alone
by Sinclair Ferguson
Nonfiction: Noted theologian, pastor, and educator Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson explores
aspects of the person and work of Jesus in his latest book, In Christ
Alone: Living the Gospel-Centered Life. This collection of articles,
published earlier in Tabletalk magazine and Eternity Magazine, is
designed to help believers gain a better understanding of their Savior
and the Christian faith, and to live out that faith in their day-to-day
lives. In fifty short chapters arranged in six sections, Dr. Ferguson
shows that Christ, who is fully God, took on humanity that He might be
the Great High Priest of His people as well as the once-for-all
sacrifice; that He now ministers to His people through His Spirit,
crowning them with great and precious blessings; and that believers are
called to duty, from cultivating contentment to mortifying sin. In
Christ Alone is packed full of nuggets of Scriptural truth that will
spark and fan the flames of the believer s love for the Savior who is so
beautiful in His person and so faithful in His work on behalf of His
beloved sheep.

Ready

In consideration of the state of our world today, readiness and preparedness seem to be hot topics. And I must confess that being ready has been in my thoughts a lot lately.
While preparing ourselves for a host of uncertainties, we cannot be so focused on the things of this temporary world that we lose sight of the Biblical concept of readiness. I hope the following verses keep us all tuned in to what is truly important.
Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. ~Matthew 24:44
Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. ~1 Corinthians 16:13
But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect... ~1 Peter 3:15
By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. ~Hebrews 11:7
And now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears we may have confidence and not shrink from Him in shame at his coming. ~1 John 2:28
Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. ~Romans 13:11-14
Though times are scary and uncertain, those of us who believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord can look forward to the future with hope, "...waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ..." (Titus 2:13), who has gone before us to prepare a place for us.
Let's make certain we're ready .
Lord Jesus, though times are uncertain and overwhelming, we can look to You with hope and comfort, secure in the fact that we belong to You. Help us to prepare ourselves in a way that brings You honor and glory and furthers Your Kingdom. Thank You for Your constant presence with us. Because of You we can face the future without fear and dread. Make us ready to give an answer to others for the hope that is in us. In Jesus' holy name, Amen.

40 Days of Prayer
by Clay Wallace
Nonfiction: One of the most significant numbers in the Bible is the number 40. Many
of the most well known Biblical events can be connected with the number
40. Moses stayed on the mountain with God for 40 days. After Noah built
the Ark, it rained for 40 days and nights. The Israelites wandered in
the desert for 40 years. Goliath challenged the Israelites for 40 days.
David and Solomon both reigned over Israel for 40 years. Jesus fasted
and prayed for 40 days. Each time the number 40 appears, God does
something huge. In 2012, God began to speak to my wife Barbara and I
about major changes coming for our ministry, Dallas Metro Dream Center.
We knew that in order for us to prepare for these changes, we needed to
become the people that God wanted us to become. Our whole staff and
board members read the book, The Circle Maker, by Mark Batterson. This
book reminded us of a principle that we have based our entire ministry
on- bold prayers changes things. Quickly after reading the book, we
decided to commit to 40 days of prayer. Every morning, I sent out an
e-mail devotion to set the tone for prayer for that day. Each day people
began to hear about the 40 days of prayer and asked to be added to the
list, and our prayer circle continues to grow. It was an incredible 40
days that made a huge difference in the lives of everyone involved.
I
want to share these devotions with you. My prayer is that God will
speak to you about changes He wants to make in your life. If we allow
the Holy Spirit to work in us, God can take us further than we can even
imagine. I challenge you to spend the next 40 days praying. What is it
in your life or home that needs to be circled in prayer? Each day for
the next 40 days, read the devotion and then spend time praying about
it. You will be amazed at what God does.
In 2011, God gave me a verse
to live by, and I have been standing on this promise ever since.
Habakkuk 1:5 “’For I am going to something in your days that you would
not believe, even if you were told.” What is it that God is going to do?
Ask. He will tell you.
Expecting,
Clay Wallace

The Everlasting Righteousness
by Horatio Bonar
Nonfiction: Another quality eBook from Chapel Library, by Horatius Bonar
(1808-1889). The Everlasting Righteousness gets right to the heart of
the gospel of Jesus Christ. How can sinful people be right before a holy
God? God’s inflexible justice demands a perfect righteousness in His
creatures; only the everlasting righteousness of the Son of God will
suffice! His is sufficient because it is that of God Himself. When a
sinner believes on Christ the Savior, his record of sins is erased on
the basis of the substitutionary work of Christ on the cross, and
Christ’s righteousness is freely reckoned to his account. This priceless
gift is granted freely to the one who places his faith in the Person of
Christ, not in his own merits, graces, or even faith itself. The
sufficient righteousness of Chirst is the safe ground of peace and joy
for the believer, as he looks not at anything in himself but the
all-sufficient Lamb of God!

Who Is Jesus?
by R.C. Sproul
Nonfiction: No person in history has provoked such widely divergent assessments as
Jesus of Nazareth. Some say He was a cunning fraud, while others say He
must have been out of His mind. In many cases His story is altered to
suit the fancies of those seeking to make Him an ally for a host of
militant causes.
However, as Dr. R. C. Sproul points out in this
Crucial Questions booklet, there is compelling evidence that Jesus was
something more-that He was, in fact, God in the flesh. By wrestling with
the biblical titles for Jesus and the accounts of His life and
ministry, Dr. Sproul unfolds the scriptural portrait of Jesus, the Son
of God.

A Matter of Obedience

Hubby and I adopted a German Shepherd from an animal shelter a few months ago, and have been engaged in a battle ever since.
Bottom Line: We want Maggie to obey; she doesn't want to.
While some of our desire for her obedience are selfish on our part, most of our commands are for her welfare. I don't want her to tug so hard on the leash that it damages her throat. I don't want her to get into fights with other dogs. I don't want her to chase cars.
In other words, it's vitally important for her to obey what we say when we say it.
The same is true for us and our relationship to God. The requirements He has for us are for our benefit. But all too often, we rush in where angels fear to tread without giving what God wants even a moment's consideration.
I'm slowly--and unfortunately, I do mean slowly--learning that in every situation and circumstance, I need to take the time to seek God's direction. When I follow this scenario, the outcome is good. When I don't, it's disastrous.
It's easy to think that we know best, that it's not that big of a deal, that it really doesn't matter. But we don't know best, it can be a big deal, and it really does matter. Our walk with God is not only a matter of faith, it's also a matter of obedience, for in our obedience we prove our love for Him and our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. ~1 John 5:1-4
Father God, thank You for loving us enough to have expectations and boundaries for us. Help us to recognize that these requirements are for our good and for the benefit of Your kingdom. May we be quick to seek Your guidance in every decision--even what we consider the little decisions. Thank You that You are available in every situation to offer Your guidance and wisdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Not So Fast
by Ann Kroeker
Nonfiction: We're raising our kids in a high-speed, high-pressured, 24/7 world.
Pushing children to get ahead, we cram everything possible into our days
to maximize their chance at success. We're overloaded, overextended,
overcommitted, and over-caffeinated. And we're paying a price: Our
relationships are anemic; our health, in jeopardy. Half-awake and
half-hearted, we can't sustain this pace. But how can we possibly
downshift without missing out?
Not So Fast: Slow-Down Solutions for Frenzied Families

refreshing alternatives. Author Ann Kroeker relates her own story of how
embracing a slower everyday pace resulted in a more meaningful family
and spiritual life. Practical ideas and insight will spark creativity
and personal reflection. Plus, ponder real-life stories from parents who
chucked the high-speed lifestyle and reaped the rewards of richer

The Divine Purpose of God's Judgment and Wrath
Throughout time we see evidence of God's judgment--against Egypt during Moses' day, against Israel and Judah during the days of the prophets--and a future judgment that will come upon all mankind. I personally believe our nation is currently under God's judgment for a multitude of sins and disobedience to His ways.
But we also see a divine purpose behind God's judgment--that people would know Him as the Lord. A keyword search of "know that I am the Lord" turned up 88 verses, most from the book of Ezekiel and Exodus.
Consider the following sample scriptures:
The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.” ~Exodus 7:5
“I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel. Say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’” ~Exodus 16:12
I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine. Then all flesh shall know that I am the Lord your Savior, and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.” ~Isaiah 49:26
And behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel and said, “Thus says the Lord, Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will give it into your hand this day, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” ~1 Kings 20:13
“Thus shall my anger spend itself, and I will vent my fury upon them and satisfy myself. And they shall know that I am the Lord—that I have spoken in my jealousy—when I spend my fury upon them." ~Ezekial 5:13
“So you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain. And Jerusalem shall be holy, and strangers shall never again pass through it." ~Joel 3:17
Even in His jealousy, judgment, and wrath, God's purpose is for people to know Him. He loves us too much to let us live in a way that is contrary to who He is, and He proved it at the cross.
Know Him.
Almighty God and Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself to us--not just once, but throughout history. Thank You for desiring a relationship with us: sinful humanity. Oh, God, we've done nothing to deserve Your love or a relationship with You, but we're grateful that You relentlessly pursue us for the purpose of allowing us to know You. Thank You for the cross of Jesus that makes it all possible. Amen.
