Wrestling Writing
One of the greatest assets in my life, other than my family and friends has been the sport of wrestling.
It has made me into the person I am today.
A person who can handle whatever adversity life throws at me.
The disciplines of wrestling are impactful on a young athlete’s life.
At first, one wrestles to win championships.
Then, after many years, one realizes it wasn’t the pursuit of championships that wrestling was all about –wrestling is about preparing you for life.
I owe a great deal to this sport, that is why I write about it so passionately.
I have written about the sport in my memoirs,
“6 Minutes Wrestling with Life,” “Again,” and “Your Soul Knows,” and I continue to write about it in this blog.
This book is a compilation of all my writing on the sport.
The book is designed to be read like each chapter is a short story, separate from one another.
Chapters can be read in order or randomly, that is your preference.
The first fifteen stories originate from my blog, and the last thirteen chapters, starting with “Overtime or Over Time?” are excerpts from my memoirs.
I felt it was necessary to compile all my writing of this great sport under one cover.
The chapters that are excerpts of my other books have been slightly edited to preserve the integrity of the story they come from.
I hope you enjoy reading “Wrestling Writing,” as much as I have enjoyed living it.

Whole Lives
An Excerpt from “A Good Man” – Chapter 21 – JohnA Passaro
Human greatness
Does not lie in wealth or power,
But in character and goodness.
Anne Frank
In John Mackey’s book “Conscious Capitalism” he tells the story of when Whole Foods was just starting out.
Early in the company’s history, when Whole Foods had only four stores, Texas was hit with a great flood.
It wiped Whole Foods out.
They lost everything.
All inventory.
All equipment.
All hope.
All four of its stores were completely flooded.
Absolute and utter destruction.
They had no resources to recover.
They had no cash, no credit and no way of rebuilding.
In his book, John Mackey reminisces about the day after the rains had stopped when he literally swam to one of the Whole Foods stores.
When he arrived after the mile swim he was surprised by what he saw.
Total strangers were uniting to rebuild the Whole Foods store.
Strangers had cleaned up the debris, they pumped out the water, they swept away the dirt.
They offered him money.
Vendors extended him credit.
The store recovered.
When John Mackey asked the strangers why they did what they did without being asked they replied,
“We love and believe in Whole Foods.
It is a good thing and you are a good man.
We just couldn’t see it destroyed.
We just had to help rebuild it.
It means that much to us.”
Whole Foods currently has 2,100 locations and produces over $11 Billion dollars in annual revenue.
It has been the primary catalyst for healthier eating in millions of our lives.
And in the process, it has touched the lives of millions of people in a positive way.
It is amazing what Whole Foods has turned into.
To think if it weren’t for the kindness of total strangers, Whole Foods wouldn’t exist today.
We all need love, especially in our time of need.
A company with 11 billion dollars in annual sales would have failed to exist if it didn’t get love at the right time.
Imagine, a few people’s love allowed Whole Foods to go from 4 stores to 2,100 stores and 11 billion in sales.
Every one of us has an opportunity to do the same thing.
We all see people in need every day of our lives.
Dante wrote: “He who sees a need and waits to be asked for help is as unkind as if he refused it.”
Act before being asked.
We each can be there for one another, providing hope and kindness in the midst of utter devastation.
Not allowing a good person or a good thing to die.
To rebuild.
To keep the mission alive.
Imagine if this rebuilding concept is duplicated 278 million times daily in the United States.
Imagine how many “Whole Lives” we could rebuild.
It has been said the way you value a life lived is by the army that comes together in its time of need.
If you value ones’ life, be there to help rebuild that life after a storm has hit.
Everyone alive today has a teetering Whole Foods in their lives they could help resurrect.
Imagine the difference you will make by showing up, without being asked, when all hope seems to be lost.
2,100 stores and 11 billion in revenue magnified 278 million times.
Imagine.

Get ready to laugh, cry, smile and think…
Twenty-six years ago, my mission in life was to win a New York State Wrestling Championship.
I committed myself to a lifestyle, I made the sacrifices, I put in the time, I starved myself, I even shaved my head.
I had the hunger, the desire, and the determination, but I came up short.
For many years, after I graduated it seemed like I got nothing out of my six years of total dedication to the sport. That the trade-off of what I gave and what I got in return to this sport was way out of whack.
I hated wrestling for it.
To put every ounce of your soul into achieving something and to get nothing out of it in return was beyond my comprehension and I just could not justify it in my head.
Until, I had adversity in my life.
And slowly but surely, I started realizing how much the sport of wrestling actually has given back to me.
Much more than I ever knew.
6 Minutes Wrestling with Life is much more than a wrestling book.
It is a book on life, love, loss and belief.

Book 2 of the “Every Breath Is Gold” Series
There are going to be many occasions where you are faced with giving up, where the normal person would not hold it against you for stopping, where almost everyone would give you a pat on the back for a valiant effort.
It is at that time that you have a choice to make, you could accept the alibi that is being thrown to you, or you can try “Again.”
The ability to keep going on when you think that you can’t go on anymore.
When you have given everything to achieving a goal and you come up short.
Your fight inside of you cannot be dictated by the amount of time left on the clock, or by the score, or by relying on getting good breaks over bad ones.
Your fight inside of you must be dictated by the outcome that you want to achieve.

It’s going to take longer than you originally thought.
You are going to need to invest more effort than you
ever would have liked to exert.
You are going to have to endure more pain than you planned.
Face more failed attempts than you thought would have been necessary. Experience more setbacks than you rationally and
logically should have ever had to go through.
There’s going to be many times when your effort will not be rewarded, or even acknowledged.
Yes, at times it’s going to suck.
For now. You need to get through the suck.
Success always lags behind hard work and effort.
When you have put in more effort than reward
received, you have to double down on belief,
confidence and enthusiasm.
You have to continue to work yourself to the brink of collapse and tears. You need to be able to do this indefinitely.
You need to have faith in the process.
For this part of the process is the final filtering system to creating greatness.
As your reward is not being unjustifiably held from you, it is actually being deferred for you. Stored up, to be given to you in a lump sum, rather than in incremental pieces.
At this point in the process, what you do not do is
more important than what you do.
In order to receive the reward of your hard work –
The reward you deserve –
The reward you have earned.
You need to be incapable of discouragement.

A Good Man
It has taken me all of my life to realize my goal in life is not to look successful to the world, but to be significant to a few.
There are times when you meet someone who winds up making a big difference in your life. In the way, you think, how you act, who you have become. And despite time or their absence, a piece of them continue to live inside of you.
My life has bounced between the extremes of exhilarating and excruciating many times, but no matter where my life is in my life’s cycle the impact this one man has had on it has always been quite evident.
A Good Man has that effect on you.

Train Your Brain
Have you ever wondered why two wrestlers can wrestle multiple times with drastically different results?
Or why –
wrestler A beat wrestler B,
wrestler B beat wrestler C,
but wrestler A lost to wrestler C?
The answer is hidden in plain sight.
Styles make matches.
Choosing to match your style versus your opponents, to create and wrestle in advantaged positions and avoid wrestling in disadvantaged positions, is the most underutilized strategic asset in wrestling.
The wrestler who wrestles in his advantage position, for a greater amount of time in the match, will have the higher probability of winning.
That is the reason why two wrestlers wrestle multiple times with drastically different outcomes, and why the logic doesn’t hold that if one wrestler beat another he should be able to beat the wrestler his prior opponent beat.
If you watch and research matches between the same wrestler’s you will see, more times than not, the reason there was a different outcome in each match was because one wrestler was able to wrestle in his advantage position in one match and was not able to do so in the other.
A wrestlers’ job is to understand which position is his advantage position versus each one of his opponents.
In which position the highest probability of scoring points as quickly as possibly exists.
And to get to that position.
I believe, you don’t get to that position by chance,
I believe, you get to that position by choice.

Train Your Brain
We have all seen the contest where a person is in a bank vault and has 360 seconds to grab as much money as possible.
If it were you, would you stop grabbing money after you had “just enough” in your hands?
Would you stop grabbing money when there were only 60 seconds left?
Would you ever be too tired to keep grabbing more money?
Obviously, not.
Why?
Because the reward of what that money can do for you overrides any of the reasons to stop.
A wrestling match is the same type of contest.
You need to have the same type of mindset.
Instead of grabbing money, though, you score points.
To a wrestler, points are money.
In each match, you have 360 seconds to score as many points as possible.
When the whistle blows, the allure of scoring points must override any and all obstacles.
Have a safe lead?
Need to score more points.
Have short time?
Need to score more points.
Have a fear of losing?
Need to score more points.
As like with the money grab, the only time you stop scoring points is when there is no time left in the contest.

O-No!
Sometimes you need to throw caution to the wind.
There are rare occasions in life where the only thing to do is to get out of the way –
And allow the magic to happen.
Ross Stripling, a 26-year-old pitcher for the Los Angelas Dodgers took a no-hitter into the 8th inning of his major league debut the other night and was pulled before he gave up a hit.
After being replaced, the very next batter hit a home run to tie the game.
Wow.
Just wow.
Karma, you would say.
Caution Dave Roberts would argue.
You may have picked up some hints in the sentence above.
A 26-year-old pitcher making his major league debut.
In 2014, Ross Stripling had Tommy John surgery and like any other pitcher who has undergone the operation was sidelined for 18 months; this was just his 15th outing since the surgery.
Yes, the conditions were horrible for even a healthy pitcher, yet alone a vulnerable pitcher recovering from an arm injury – the rain intensified in the 8th inning.
Yes, Stripling had just given up his 4th walk in 7 1/2 innings, and yes the game needed to be won by a rookie manager.
And yes, there was a predetermined 100 pitch count for the outing.
And yes, Stripling never went over the 100 pitch level in any of his previous 48 minor league starts.
And yes Ross Stripling’s 100th pitch, on a 3-1 count, was a micro inch high and outside.
And yes the tying run just eagerly started scratching the dirt with his cleat in the batters box.
But no, you don’t replace a pitcher who is throwing a no-hitter in the 8th inning.
Sometimes in life, you just need stay out of the way in order to allow the magic to happen.
Baseball has taught many a manager that some of the best managerial decisions are the ones where you just allow the game to be played.
What could have been a “No-No”, turned into an ” O-No”
It has been 124 years since a pitcher in his major league debut threw a no-hitter.
Actually, Ross Striplig has revised that stat.
It has now been 124 years since a pitcher threw a complete game no-hitter in his major league debut.
In Ross Stripling’s major league debut, the magic showed up but he was taken out.
And the Dodgers wound up losing more than just the game.
It is one of life’s unwritten rules:
Stay out of the way when the magic is happening.

It has taken me all of my life to realize my goal in life is not to look successful to the world, but to be significant to a few.
There are times when you meet someone who winds up making a big difference in your life. In the way you think, how you act, who you have become. And despite time, or their absence, a piece of them continue to live inside of you.
My life has bounced between the extremes of exhilarating and excruciating many times, but no matter where my life is in my life’s cycle the impact this one man has had on it has always been quite evident.
A Good Man has that effect on you.

My Vote For President
We have more work to do.
Hard work.
Frightening work.
Uncertain work, unending work.
Work that may test us, work that may defeat us.
Work for which we may not get the credit, but work on which the whole world depends.
The time is short and the odds are long, but I believe that we are ready nonetheless.
With the love of those that raised us,
With the lessons of those who taught us,
With the strength of those who stand beside us as we face what lies ahead,
I say, let us begin.

Stimulating Quotes
The flower that blooms in adversity, is the rarest and most beautiful of all.

Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake.
Henry David Thoreau
To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.
Mahatma Ghandi
Not until we are completely lost or turned around…
Do we begin to find ourselves.
Henry David Thoreau
There is no better way of thanking God for your sight than by giving a helping hand to someone in the dark.
Helen Keller
When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares.
Henri J.M. Nouwen
The best way out is always through.
Robert Frost
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Martin Luther King Jr.
The opposite of life is not death, it’s indifference.
Elie Wiesel
What I need is the dandelion in the spring.
The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction.
The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses.
That it can be good again.
Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.
Helen Keller
Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows.
Helen Keller
No effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost.
Helen Keller
What I am looking for is not out there, it is within me.
Helen Keller
So much has been given to me I have not time to ponder over that which has been denied.
Helen Keller
It is not what you look at that matters, it is what you see.
Henry David Thoreau
Let yourself be drawn by the stronger pull of that which you truly love.
Rumi
It’s the action, not the fruit of the action, that’s important.
You have to do the right thing.
It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that they’ll be any fruit.
But that doesn’t mean that you stop doing the right thing.
You may never know what results come from your action.
But if you do nothing there will be no result.
Mahatma Ghandi
Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events.
It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
Robert D. Kennedy
We know what we are, but not what we may be.
William Shakespeare
I know of no better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and impossible.
Friedrich Nietzsche
In this sad world of ours sorrow comes to all and it often comes with bitter agony. Perfect relief is not possible except with time.
You cannot now believe that you will ever feel better.
But this is not true.
You are sure to be happy again.
Knowing this, truly believing it will make you less miserable now.
I have had enough experience to make this statement.
Abraham Lincoln
You can tell the greatness if a man by what makes him angry.
Abraham Lincoln
No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
Friedrich Nietzsche
One day, in retrospect, the days of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.
Sigmund Freud
Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.
Zora Neale Hurston
