Satellite Sisters Jan. 25: Liz, Monica and Lian Tackle Sky Mall, Beyonce, the Thrill of Robotics and the Agony of Deflategate.

Listen to today’s Satellite Sisters.

Yes, Satellite Sisters. There was way more going on in sports this week than Deflategate. How about that Hahnenkamm in Kitzbuhel? (Insert your own balls joke here.)

On today’s Satellite Sisters Lian, Monica and Liz ask the big questions:

Where are we going to get those oddball items once Sky Mall is gone?  Full-sized Yeti, Piddle Place Pet Relief Systems and Wine Glass Holdeer Necklaces.  Where will we go?

What’s on TV when the NFL is not?  Turns out LOTS of events we LOVE.  Men’s Downhill from Kitzbuhel, Australian Open, Figure Skating Championships, X Games from Aspen.

What’s up with Tom Brady’s footballs?  He didn’t notice the difference?  Hmmmmm.

What’s Liz’s Superbowl gig?  Yes, she’s got one.

What are the craziest events coming up in Portland?  Monica’s got three real life events that sound like they are made for TV. Get ready to cuddle.  Or snuggle.  Or something.

Who did Lian see at the Clippers game this week?  Other than NBA players? MAJOR sighting.

How is Liz going to find Satellite Sister Tracy tonight at the SAG Awards?  It’s all about watching for accessories.

Satellite Sisters January 18, 2015: Sheila shares news about what she wears on her head at home. Liz, Monica and Lian are taken aback but carry on with news, talks and laughs.

Listen to today’s Satellite Sisters here.

Liz, Sheila, Monica and Lian tackle:

Liz shares Operation Sea Turtle, Phase Two. It has three prongs, of course, because that's Sheila's rule.

Sheila’s take on the latest fashion trends and what she wears on her head when she is home alone. No photos please.

Lian’s has a warning on trendy new food and diet advice.  Her German Shepherd Mika disapproved this new advice years ago.

Lian wants Liz’s advice on Sheryl Sandberg’s advice  in the New York Times about women speaking up in a meeting.

And Monica’s wants some movie-going suggestions this holiday weekend so all the sisters weigh in.

Plus Liz is putting Operation Sea Turtle Phase Two in effect.  It requires unplugging a lot of devices.  Let’s see how that goes.

She is also starting Errol Morris’ new bestseller about the trails of Jeffrey MacDonald entitled A Wilderness of Error. The podcast Serial turned her on to true crime.

And Monica also finished another true crime book which she calls a real pageturner:  The Good Nurse by Charles Graeber. Good book, unsettling subject.

Satellite Sisters Classic by Request: Julie visits North Korea from 092610

In light of recent news, we thought we’d repost the podcast about Julie’s visit to North Korea fro 2010. Her description of life there is just as chilling today as it was 4 years ago. And a reminder of what Julie has been saying since then: there is nothing funny about North Korea…

You can listen here:

http://traffic.libsyn.com/satellitesisters/ss092610.mp3

And here is Julie’s original blog post:

Satellite Sisters go everywhere! Here I am outside the “deluxe” Koryo Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea.  I snuck out the front door and flashed my official Satellite Sisters T-shirt.  I was advised that t-shirts with political statements are not allowed in North Korea.  While Satellite Sisters stands for fun, friendship and family, I was afraid to wear my shirt. That’s how weird things are in NK. I thought my shirt might make trouble with one of our guides or minders.   So, one quick flash, picture snapped, and then I buttoned back up.

The Koryo Hotel with its two revolving restaurants was the second hotel our tour group stayed in.  Our group started out at the Yanggakdo Hotel ( only one revolving restaurant) but was suddenly moved to the Koryo in anticipation of the first meeting in 30 years of the country’s Workers’ Party.  We were bumped so that the  delegates could enjoy the many amenities of  Yanggakdo.   You can hear more of my description of this deluxe hotel on our podcast below..

Kim Jong Il, through his state news agency announced today that his third son and sister would become four-star generals, the highest rank in the Korean People’s Army. FYI- Kim Jong Il has not spoken publicly since 1994.  Many observers are viewing these promotions as a sign by Kim Jong Il to maintain family control over North Korea.  I had asked my guides last week about Kim Jong Il’s son and they had no information to share.  There was a lot of that.

I also read that the Party delegates were going to enjoy the spectacular Mass Games where 100,000 participants dance, do acrobatics, flash cards, twirl banners and  streamers and make seemingly thousands of costume changes to tell the story of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea ( DPRK).  While watching this incredible display, I kept thinking of the London 2012 Olympic Organizing Committee.  The London Olympics is going to have to work hard to beat the Beijing Opening Ceremonies and perhaps the DPRK could assist.
