Black Friday is on sale
99¢ at Amazon for the next five days….
There is something remarkable about this book, and it’s not just Hodges’ writing style that gives it that edge. It’s not often that I connect with characters on a quasi-meta level, but Hodges’ dialogue and descriptive idiosyncrasies sent chills down my spine and made me actually listen to what the characters had to say. He is a masterful author who possesses the rare ability to allow the reader to forgive and forget the characters’ shortcomings.

Rain, finally.
The rain is finally here. Our first measurable rainfall came yesterday, and hasn’t stopped since. The mountains are getting snow, too, above 5,000 feet. The summer of 2017 is now officially the driest and hottest in recorded history for Montana. Good riddance.
I had to get out into the woods. On my way to the mountains, this bison blocked me on a narrow, dangerous road. Eventually he let me pass.

Whitetail buck, Montana
Two days ago, we had an amazing smoke-free evening in Montana. So I went out into the woods and encountered this majestic buck, along with some of his friends.

The Bitterroot National Forest
Earlier in the summer, well before the smoke and fires, I was fortunate to spend a glorious day in the Bitterroot National Forest. This 1.587 million acre national forest straddles the Montana/Idaho border, culminating in the spectacular 10,157 foot Trapper Peak.
Most people visit Montana because of Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. But I find the Bitterroots to be just as scenic. It’s likely the range would be a national park, if not for the other two.

Bull moose feeding in Glacier National Park
Last fall I was lucky to film this bull moose feeding on aquatic vegetation in Glacier National Park. Here’s hoping for cooler times once more in Montana, which is currently being hammered by widespread fires and poor air quality.

The Invasive 2: Remnants is out
Hey everyone,
Things are crazy out here in western Montana. Fires are blowing up all over the place. There is good news, however. “The Invasive 2: Remnants” is out! The novel once again takes place in Montana, and features the same cast of characters from the popular “The Invasive”. I had a lot of fun writing the sequel, and I’m glad it’s finally out.
You can grab a copy of the novel here.
Best,
– Michael

Black bear in Big Sky country
Every so often Montana will give you a jaw-dropping scene. I had to wait this bear out, but eventually the bear’s hunger took over as it dug up rocks for grubs.

Black bear, western Montana
We had a rare smoke free day in Montana yesterday, so I had to take advantage. I explored a location about 45 minutes from Missoula, and came face to face with this black bear.

The Lolo Peak Fire
This image was captured at 11:30 last night, from Missoula, Montana.
The Lolo Peak fire has been a monster from the beginning, and shows no signs of slowing down. For most of July and August, it burned in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and adjacent national forest land. But now it’s burning down the ridge, towards Highway 93.

Lolo Peak fire, August 16th
Taken from my house, around 8 pm. We’re going through a wicked fire season here in western Montana, trigged by a record-setting fifty days of no measurable rain.
Currently, there are evacuations for parts of Lolo and Florence.
In any season, Montana brings challenges. It is still however, the most beautiful place in the world.
