Coffee, projects, new photo.

I’ve received a bunch of new followers recently on Facebook and Instagram, which means I should probably introduce myself to the new folks.

First, this is my favorite coffee shop and I can’t stop going there, lol. Second, I’m a novelist and photographer. My debut novel “The Puller” was optioned for film…and then optioned again. “The Puller” is a woodsy thriller about being trapped. I also wrote “The Invasive” and “Black Friday”, both thrillers in the trapped vein. You can order any of them in the column on the right side of this page.

I’m also a photographer, with work appearing in national magazines and newspapers. I was featured in Outside Magazine’s Best Adventure Photography of 2014, and their calendar run, and in places like the front page of The Missoulian. My focus is animals and nature.

I have a lot of cool projects forthcoming, including screenplays, a new novel, and a non-fiction project. A big thanks to everyone for supporting this author and photographer.

The old bull

I’ve been “secretly” working on a new non-fiction project. My agent Lane and I are bouncing images and text back and forth seeing how to best tackle this. The project will document my photography in the west (almost two decades worth) amongst other conservation issues.

This image is featured in the project.

Every once in a while the king bull of the mountains makes an appearance. But not often. He's smart enough to avoid the gaze of people. This bull was not pleased that a person was watching. You can see it in his eyes. They don't get that big and that strong by being careless.

In remembrance.

I had a jam-packed couple of days recently. Had a gig west of the divide and camped out. On the way home, I ventured into the remote northern Bitterroots to release my grandmother’s ashes.

I ended up getting lost up at 6k during a wicked storm on my way to find a hidden lake. Trees were cracking and teetering, debris swirled in the air. Then the storm cleared as if it was never there, and a rainbow appeared over the wilderness. A few minutes later I found the lake, and spread the ashes in the largest wilderness ecosystem in the lower 48, right on the Idaho/Montana border in sub-alpine country still rimmed with snowfields. I could hear a waterfall crashing into the lake as I spread the ashes.

My grandmother was amazingly strong and independent…a centering force. I looked up to her that way, and I hope it rubbed off on me.

Thanks for everything, grandma.

Update, concepts.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update, but there’s a lot going on.

My latest dark thriller (I’d tell you the title, but it’s still early) is out on submission with my agent. This should be interesting, as the concept is really cool. I came up with it on a drive from Missoula to Big Timber, Montana. Along the way, I passed a defunct (and toxic) smelter stack. The imposing loneliness of the stack framed the grey mountains behind it. And just like that, the concept trickled into my head organically.

The best ones always do.

I also have several projects out with producers (including my most popular novel). There’s always something. And look for an extensive interview soon on Geeks of Doom.
