Indies First Saturday

Today I'm back to work on the edit of Inamorata, but I thought you'd like to see a few pictures from Indies First Saturday, when I ventured into the wild world of retail with Jonathan Evison, Carol Casella, and Kristin Hannah. It was a lot of fun, and I think we actually managed to sell a few books here and there.

As always, Liberty Bay Books has autographed copies of my books on hand, and she'll even have me personalize one if you wish. Just contact them online here. Also, if you'd like to have a copy of the books I recommended: Asylum by John Harwood, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke, and The Typewriter Girl, by Alison Atlee, Liberty Bay Books has those as well. (The Typewriter Girl even has a "Recommended by Megan Chance" signature in the front).

Though it was fun, If there was one thing I learned it's that retail is hard work, and I've got nothing but admiration for those who are out there in the trenches--especially the weekend after Thanksgiving! Now I'm back to what I actually know how to do: Edit!

Indie Saturday

Today I'm busy cooking for Thanksgiving (chocolate cream pie, winter slaw and pretzel rolls), and of course tomorrow is the big family feast. The edit for Inamorata has winged its way back to me, so I'll be working on that over the long weekend. But on Saturday ... on Saturday I'm doing something that should be pretty fun. Kristin Hannah and I, along with several other local authors, will be signing and chatting about our books at our local independent bookstore, Liberty Bay Books. We'll also be handselling some of our favorite books of the year. Mine include Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April Genevieve Tucholke, The Typewriter Girl by Alison Atlee, and Asylum by John Harwood. I loved each of these book for different reasons, and I'll be jotting a "Recommended by Megan Chance" on each one sold.

I'll be there from 12-2 on November 30th, with Kristin Hannah (you'll have to ask her to see what books she's dying to talk about, because I don't know). More information about the event is here. If you'd like to order any of the books I've recommended, with my "Recommended by..." written inside, you can order those through Liberty Bay Books as well.

In the meantime, I wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Editing Blues

I am buried in the final stages of this first round of editing for my September 2014 book, Inamorata, but I did manage to find some time this past weekend to do two very special events.

The first was for Seattle7Writers--a nonprofit group whose events help fund literacy programs. This year's holiday booksigning was a lot of fun, and I met many new and interesting people--and hey, all you interesting people I met: please forgive that my brain is a little less than brilliant lately. Nothing is so exhausting as keeping what's been written, what needs to be written, and what's been revised in your head all at the same time.

Here's a picture from that event:

And secondly, I attended the 90th birthday party of my very astonishing and inspirational step-grandmother. Here are two pictures from that event, where I'm photographed with some people who are very special to me:
Nita's 90th 1
left to right: my artist/illustrator sister, Robyn Chance, me and my mother

Nita's 90th 2
From left to right: my sister Amy, and me

That will have to suffice for now. I'm heading back into the dark and lonely writing cave.

Seattle7Writers Holiday Book Signing

Just a heads up that I've added a new event to my Upcoming Events page. This one should be fun. Sunday, November 17th, between 2-5 p.m., I'll be signing with a bunch of other writers at the Phinney Neighborhood Center in Seattle. (6532 Phinney Ave. N.).

Other extremely cool authors who will be there are Garth Stein, Erica Bauermeister, Kevin O'Brien, Jennie Shortridge, Elizabeth George, Kristin Hannah, Laurie Frankel, Lynn Brunnell, Claire Dederer, William Deietrich, Kevin Emerson, Deb Caletti, Thor Hanson, Mike Lawson, Clare Meeker, Shannan Huffman Polson, Bharti Kirchner, Bernadette Pajer, Sean Beaudoin, Susanne Selfors and Susan Wiggs. That's 22 authors (including me), for those of you counting.

Some will be reading, and all will be signing books available for purchase by Santoro's Books. There will be cookies too--always a good thing, and all purchases help support 826 Seattle. We'll be collecting gently used books too for Seattle7Writers community pocket libraries--bring two or more, and get a reusable Seattle7Writers bag.

New at the Author's Blog

Today's my guest blog day at Author Magazine Online. Here, I wax poetic (sort of, no not really) on Critiques:

And also, author Maggie Stiefvater has this to say about swearing in books. I heartily agree:

New Book News!!

I have some excellent news to report: I've just sold another adult historical fiction novel to Amazon's Lake Union Press. This one has a pub date of September 2, 2014--so it's a long time to wait, but not TOO long. Inamorata is set among American expatriates in Venice in the 1870s, and it's got some very ... interesting and special touches. I loved writing it, and I think my readers will love it too.

And remember, the first in my young adult trilogy The Shadows, will be released in the Spring. Set during the recession of 1874 in New York City, among the immigrant Irish, The Shadows is the story of Irish myths come to life, and the very ordinary girl who must come to terms with an unexpected and perilous destiny.

I've got more news coming soon, so watch this page!

New at the Author's Blog

At last! I have managed to remember that today is the day I have a new blog up at the Author's Blog at Author Magazine Online. This one is a reflection on a writing career as my daughter--who wants to be a writer herself--goes off to college. Here it is:
