When you can’t hold on any longer

a lesson from an elementary tug-of-war

It’s field day for my daughter’s elementary school. All the students are out on the track’s mid-field participating in various events such as the 100 yard dash, the baseball throw, and the hula hoop contest. It’s an end-of-year celebration full of games and friendly competition. The grand event at the end, the tug-of-war, is anticipated by all. Though you can gain points for your class by winning in an event, the tug-of-war brings in the most points beca...

Do you have imposter syndrome?

it may be more common than you think

This past week I attended a writer’s conference. Going into it, I was looking forward to learning more about improving my writing, serving my readers, and growing more into the gifts that God’s given me. But shadowing all that was the anxious feelings of not being good enough to even attend. I was certain I would be surrounded by people who had it all figured out and who were so much further along in their writing careers. I was intimidated and battled tho...

How do we help ourselves remember the good things?

when all we remember is the bad

Anxiety has a way of blocking out anything that is good or rational. It causes us to fixate on every bad scenario and any what-if that may come our way. It can become a cloud that blocks out the sun, causing us to only see the hard right in front of us instead of the good all around us.

But you don’t have to struggle with an anxiety disorder to get a clouded view. Though we have the blessing of long-term memory, often we settle for the short-term. But, we do...

How to be authentic and not a people pleaser

No one likes an imposter. Someone who says one thing and does another. We value authenticity. Being able to believe that the way a person acts and speaks is who they really are, not just a show. We appreciate being able to trust others in this way.

how can we be that in our own life?

And I would assume others would value this in us as well.

But, have you ever found yourself acting different for other groups of people than with others? Sure, there is a time for business-self and casual-s...

What is the first step to improving my health?

In February 2010 I delivered my third and final baby via C-section. Four months prior to that, I had seen my husband train, run, and finish his first marathon. It left me inspired and wanting to do a big race myself. I saw him push himself outside his comfort zone, and I wanted to try it too. It left me thinking, “What is the first step to improving my health and accomplishing that goal?”

choosing to improve my health

I had done 5Ks before and ran three-mile races in high school, but it ha...

How do I start being intentional?

connecting our calling to our purpose

You were placed on this earth for a certain number of days. Time is precious, and you don’t want to waste it. You desire a life that has meaning and purpose. But your day is filled with dishes, laundry, carpooling, the nine to five, texts to respond to, soccer practice, and bedtime routines. You say you want a
life that matters, but how do you do that in the middle of … life?

With so many areas of everyday life in maintenance mode, there isn’t a lot of...

How can I help my child calm down?

She comes to me with teary eyes, a shaky voice, and stomping feet, “This is dumb! Everything is terrible! I’m never going to school again!” How can I help my child calm down?

My 13-year-old daughter is prone to drama. It doesn’t take much for her to fly off the handle these days. One minute she’s happily crafting at the table and the next moment her mood has made such a drastic change I have whiplash from it.

My first response is to say the easiest—and least helpful—words, “Just calm down....

3 powerful steps to overcome your fear of failure

how do we describe it

How do you define failure? How do you define success? It’s one thing to read the definition in a dictionary, it’s another to describe it in regard to your own life. For someone who fears failure because of their strong perfectionist streak in them, it can be hard to nail down what success is because if we define success, it’s possible that we may not meet it and then be considered a failure. Or, because we do not want to fail, we set the goals of success so low that we a...

How can I make this summer count?

Schools are winding down and students and teachers both are looking forward to a reprieve! Though some may appreciate the stop to routine for a bit, for others the complete lack of schedule causes anxiety to rise. We hear about bucket lists, being the “yes” parent, and how we only have so many summers left with our kids. All of that may lead you to feel the pressure to make the most of the summer ahead – and with that pressure comes anxiety.

Whenever I feel that anxiety rising in me, I know i...
