Winning the Race You Were Called to Run

Lessons in Perseverance and Faithhigh school boys running a cross country race

I’m standing in a crowd of spectators as we wait for the first runner to come around the corner.

The anticipation starts to be palpable as everyone is waiting excitedly for their runner to show up.

Then, the lead runner rounds the corner, and the smattering of voices changes to yells and cheers.

For the most part, the words are encouraging – cheering each runner to finish strong.

As I wait for my own runner to show, one particular moment catch...

Hope When Anxiety and Depression Are Debilitating

I met Kristen online through the community of COMPEL – a Proverbs 31 ministry for writers and creatives. Through conversations, we found out that we even live in the same city! Kristen also has a history of anxiety and depression and wants to help others who are struggling with it, too. I’m thrilled to be able to share her words with you and pray they are an encouragement for those who are looking for hope in the midst of the hard.

In 9th grade I started getting headaches.

Sometimes they would come on strong and persist for several days. Sometimes I would go weeks between these episodes. My biggest “trick” was to push through despite them (not recommended!), drink more water, and try to go to bed early.

As a college student, I experienced my first aura, followed 15 minutes later with the worst headache of my life so far.

Fortunately, I worked at a neurology offi...

Exhausted from all the work?

have you tried letting the ground rest?

This bleeds over into every corner of my life – my writing, my 9-5 job, my home, my parenting. This maybe leads to a lot of things getting checked...

An open letter for the start of school

This letter was originally written when my oldest, now a junior in high school, started kindergarten. Though the letter’s focus is towards kids, there are reminders in there for all of us, regardless of our ages. If you know of a friend that needs this reminder too – please share it with them!

When every thought seems to control you and steals your joy

do you believe everything you think?

Just like the heart can sway and dictate our feelings, our thoughts can direct our actions. The words we speak, the people we avoid, and even the psychosomatic reactions of our own bodies. A few years ago, I hung a phrase up in a prominent spot in our home so that the whole family could be reminded regularly: “Don’t believe everything you think.”

Think back on a time in your life when you made yourself anxious over something because of what you thought,...
