Municipal elections 2011: Godzille snaping at the heels of Jacob Zuma

In 2007, Helen Zille becomes leader of the Democratic Alliance. Since then when the party's appeal was mainly the relatively well-off white minority, she started concentrating her efforts on broadening the appeal so much so that the ANC and Jacob Zuma are beginning to feel her bite in the 2011 municipal elections. Black voters, no longer, see a "white" party like the DA as their political opponent as was the case before 1994. The DA has made inroads into the traditional base of the ANC. After securing an end to white minority rule in 1994, the ANC has won a clear majority in every election since then. However ANC support is decreasing due to increasing unemployment, persisting inequality and non-delivery of services

110515st 11 05 15 15 May 2011 Sunday Times Municipal elections 2011: We are all in more kaka

The ANC and the Democratic Alliance (DA) have been slow to act on "open-air" toilets. Ordered by the court, Dan Plato has not complied to close the open-air toilets in Makhaza (Khayelitsha). In ANC run Moqhaka Free State, there appears to be tender fraud. Moqhaka mayor - Mantebu Mokgosi and her husband Daniel are partners in Daneteb Construction, who won the tender to build toilets.

Zapiro's cartoon includes politicians from both ANC and the DA. It shows both Sicelo Shiceka the minister responsible and Cape Town's mayor Dan Plato both asleep. The two Cape Town City mayoral candidates (Patricia De Lille and Tony Erenreich) don't look impressed.
