The Competition Commission of South Africa approves Walmart/Massmart deal under the condition of no firing workers in the first two years and Walmart having a programme for developing suppliers in place. Walmart is a corporation, whose global annual revenue exceeds $400 billion and is larger than South Africa's GDP. The acquisition will have an impact on procurement and labour practices effecting workers, suppliers and customers. The Unions and other retailers are concerned that extraordinarily large retailers, like Walmart enjoy the power to dictate terms to producers and suppliers, which limits their ability to pay decent wages, to invest in new products and technologies.
