Tensions between the existing ANC leadership and Julius Malema increases. While Julius Malema was instrumental in removing former President Thabo Mbeki from power in 2008 in support for Zuma, he now praises Thabo Mbeki as ANC's best leader. In September 2008, both Jacob Zuma and Julius Malema referred to Thabo Mbeki as a "Dead Snake", which needed to be buried.

110602mg 11 06 02 2 Jun 2011 Mail & Guardian South African Ambassador to Uganda Jon Qwelane guilty of anti-gay hate speech

Back in 2008, Jon Qwelane posted a piece in his column, in the Sunday Sun. Despite protest and outrage, Jacob Zuma's government appointed him South Africa's Ambassador to that country. Found guilty of hate speech against homosexuals for writing that article, he remains South Africa's ambassador to Uganda, a country that still wants to "hang the homos!" While homophobia festers in Uganda, South Africa serves as one of the only refuges for Gay and Lesbian Ugandans. At the same time, they place a proven homophobe as their ambassador.

David Kato's death puts Uganda homophobia in spotlight - A well known Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato has been found beaten to death in Kampala. Mr Kato's picture had been published by an anti-gay newspaper and he was the subject of a hate campaign mg 20110602zg June Mail & Guardian /Cartoons/m_110602mg.jpg 110602mg
Jon Qwelane's continued tenure as high commissioner in Uganda has been labelled an "embarrassment to the constitution" after he was found guilty yesterday of hate speech against homosexuals.
