Okay so I had small day today and only wrote 184 words but I didn’t plan to write at all today, so go me for that. Also I got some good character charting filled out, too.

The trees beneath them had changed. Instead of thick bursts of yellow that couldn’t be seen through, the leaves were patchy, as though sections had been shaken loose. The remaining leaves seemed dimmer, their yellow more a dingy tan. Beneath the trees was difficult to make out at their steady clip, but the glimpses she caught seemed to be barren dirt rather than lush fields of moss.

“That’s why we fly over,” the creature said over her shoulder, seeing Ari and Kelsey peering downward.

“What’s wrong with it?” Ari called over the breeze and the beating of giant moth wings.

“That’s Tinn’s forest now. Only a fool would travel through it on foot.”

That’s a long quote for a short amount of writing but lol oh well, I like it. World is starting to flesh out, I love that feeling.

Convo Question for my followers:

Do you guys set goals for your word count in the day/week or do you just try to write when ever you can? Or do you say your going to write and then just tumble everyday instead? (me too sometimes)

People have written a lot of touchy-feely pieces on this subject but I thought I’d get right to the heart of the matter

This is 1000% more motivating than every preachy “real writers write every day” post on all of Tumblr.

Editing tip: Are you suffering from -ing disease?

theliteraryarchitect:

Hey all! Another tip from the editor’s desk. This one is about verbs that end in -ing.

In fiction, -ing verbs can be accurately used to:

(1) Indicate that two actions are happening simultaneously.

Example: While running to catch the bus, Jake dropped his keys.

(2) Show that an action is ongoing or still in progress.

Example: Ingrid wanted to use the oven for her pot roast, but the muffins were still baking.

Jason had been attending college for three years.

But when you misuse or overuse -ing verbs, it quickly becomes tedious and awkward for readers.

As an editor, here are the most common mistakes I see beginning fiction writers make with -ing verbs:

nonbinarypastels:

anyway most writing advice is frequently contradictory to other writing advice you might receive from people who have just as much/more writing ~expertise~ and a lot of writing advice is just flat-out terrible even if it’s coming from an ~expert~ so if you’re a writer consider this post a reminder that

writing advice that comes up on your dash should be looked at as tips you can choose to follow or discard as it suits you, not hardline rules you MUST abide by or else you’re a ‘bad writer’
you’re allowed to look at a piece of writing advice and say, “wow, that’s a shit idea and i don’t want write like that” and forget about it – even if the post has thousands of notes full of other people agreeing with it
there is no One True Right Way to write, your writing does not have to be just like everyone else’s – if all stories were written the same way and with the same style, reading would be a much more boring thing to do
if you try to write in a way that pleases everyone, you will fail because pleasing everyone is not possible – your own satisfaction with your work, your own desire to write a story, and your own enjoyment of writing are more important than that

prycarious:

Summary

The dawn of airship flight created a second Golden Age for piracy and the world’s strongest imperial power. By 1872, the East India Company has smothered both the smuggling havens of small autonomous states and the livelihood of corsairs. Their military reach deters all but those most determined to prevent the Golden Age from coming to an end.

Nerea once claimed top spot on the Company’s blacklist by targeting trading vessels in the East Indies. Increased military activity now keeps Windrose on the defense, mutual discontent growing between her and the crew. When the engine stalls after escaping a failed plunder, she risks losing more than her ship.

Ketan deserted from the Company after siding with an isolated rebellion of tea plantation workers in his native India. Despite reveling in the command of Grimnir Cross, the consequences of betrayal begin to weigh on him. Aiding the stranded Windrose comes as a welcome distraction.

The Company soon entangles their troubles, both captains becoming desperate to keep their freedom. Even the precarious trust grown between them endangers more than it endeavors to protect—if one goes down, the other may follow at any cost.

Wednesday Writing Recs:

Aliferous.

What can I really say that could accurately sum up my emotions for this chapter?

The world building is both fascinating and easy to follow, the writing is engaging and polished while retaining a humble beauty, the main character is easy to root for, and the fighting

airship battle anyone? —

is spectacularly clear.

My only disappointment is that I can’t read the rest yet!

writing-central:

Prompt

After sirens sink a pirate ship to steal a treasure chest, one stays behind, feeling guilty, and saves the captain from drowning, bringing them to an island. When the captain wakes up, they see the retreating siren, not knowing the siren saved them. They shoot the siren out of anger for their sunken ship, a nonlethal but scarring shot. Years later, the captain sees the siren again while out at sea, recognizing the scar where they injured the siren. And the captain still wants their treasure back.
