My career, ten years on

Ten years ago this week I sold my 1st Sherlock Holmes story, THE QUALITY OF MERCY, to Charles Prepolec for Gaslight Grotesque. In retrospect it proved to be a bit of a turning point in my career.

At that stage I only had a handful of small press books out and a whole lot of UK small press publications, with only half a dozen pro credits to my name. I made less money from writing that whole year than I've just made this month.

It's been a wild ten year run since then, with over 80 pro short story sales, novels and collections in hardcover at Dark Regions, Dark Renaissance, DarkFuse among others, a storming success on Kindle for early ebooks like The Invasion and The Valley and now the S-Squad series doing very well for me. And that's not even counting all the Lovecraftian anthos I've got into.

All that's missing from the early dreams is an appearance in one of the 'Year's Best' anthos, but that's a dream I've let go of. Oh, and the big Hollywood blockbuster... I still dream about that every so often.

I thought I'd be slowing down in my sixties, but it seems I have stories in me yet.

Onward.
