Love, Lies, and the Sixties: A Tale of Youth and Temptation with Author CJ Martin
Welcome to another engaging entry of Online for Authors! As your guest host, Carole O'Neill, I'm excited to bring you an insightful conversation with the talented author CJ Martin. In today's podcast episode, we delve into his second novel "Peter, Jodi, (and Gloria)," unveiling the creative processes behind his work and exploring his journey as a writer. This blog post aims to offer you, our community of readers and listeners, a glimpse into CJ Martin's world and what makes his novels so captivating.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionAn Introduction to "Peter, Jodi, (and Gloria)"
CJ’s second novel is set in the vibrantly transformative era of the sixties, following the lives of a college senior and an MBA student. As CJ shares, this book, while rooted in familiar settings and experiences, is a work of fiction with colorful characters and engaging stories. Although inspired by his time at Northwestern University's MBA program, the novel spins a tale of romance, meetings against the odds, and life's unexpected turns.
Taking Inspiration from Real Life
CJ discussed how his personal experiences, particularly the poignant and lively spirit of the sixties, have influenced his writing. From music to dance, and even fashion, he captures the essence of the era in his narrative. As he reflected on this memorable decade, he humorously mentioned, "I think a lot of people in that time in their life are connected with the popular music like today... the Beatles were emerging," showcasing the powerful impact of that time on his creativity.
Creating Characters That Connect
The novel presents us with Peter, who meets a cheerleader named Jodi. Their relationship is tested through distance and unexpected challenges. Likewise, Gloria adds another layer of intrigue and temptation, causing Peter to evaluate his choices amidst life's emotional complexity. CJ intriguingly compared Peter's impulsive actions to the storyline in "The Graduate," hinting at a depth of character development that makes readers eagerly turn the pages.
A Thoughtful Writing Process
CJ shed light on his writing methodology, characterizing himself as a 'plotter'—a writer who meticulously plans out their story before putting pen to paper. This approach perhaps roots in his background in engineering and business, encouraging structured and thoughtful planning over spontaneity. As he recounted, his dedication to writing required considerable effort, akin to when he aimed to perfect his golf handicap, writing and rewriting until the narrative felt right.
The Sequel Awaits
Excitingly, CJ Martin is currently working on the third installment, which promises to further unravel Peter and Jodi's journey. They graduate college amidst personal challenges, leaving readers to wonder how Jodi reacts to Peter’s proposal that they live together in a luxurious condo. The anticipation builds as CJ hints at what’s to come, encouraging readers to engage with the series fully by starting from the beginning to appreciate the character development and plot progression.
CJ Martin eloquently combines knowledge with creativity, making his novels a delightful exploration of human experiences. Book Review: Chandelier
Chandelier by Ben Hawken is a can't-put-down thriller that kept me reading long past my bedtime! We meet Sienna as a young child who finds herself working on a government project because of a small ridge present in her brain. According to the scientists, this ridge is like an antenna that picks up Russian signals. Sienna loves that she is part of something big, but when her part in the project is over, she feels unfulfilled - as though she failed. She spends the rest of her life trying to outrun that feeling. As an adult, Sienna is a wife, mother, and expert in her field. She is also somewhat aloof and has never revealed to her secret life as a child. Until ... the past comes barreling into her present and threatens to destroy her carefully laid future.
I love Sienna's character. She is tough and smart, but also scared and scarred. Like me, she would do anything for her children - and that resolve is tested as she reveals long-hidden truths and makes difficult decisions for her family. I was on the edge of my seat and loved the twists and turns of this story. It's a must read!

Book Review: Unspoken
Unspoken by Jann Alexander is a gut-wrenching historical fiction detailing one young girl's experience during the Dust Bowl in the Texas panhandle. If you are looking for a simple read with no drama, then this is not for you. However, if you want the hard, gritty truth about life during the dustbowl of the 1930s, then run right out and grab your copy.We see one dozen years of Ruby's life starting at the tender age of 11. She has lost her baby sister and grandmother to dust pneumonia, also known as the brown plague, and almost succumbs herself. That's when her father sends her away to live with a cousin in Waco, and Ruby's entire life unwinds. We also see snippets of her mother's life - a woman confined to a mental institution. And Jann did a remarkable job showing how both those lives intertwined!
I was horrified by conditions at the state welfare home for children as well as the insane asylum. It makes me wonder how anyone could survive either place - and how a child like Ruby Lee figured out not only have to survive but eventually thrive. Although a difficult book to read because of the raw honesty, it was well worth the effort. A definite 5 stars.

Mafia, Masterpieces & the Vatican: A Story Woven from Truth with Author Margaret Philbrick
Welcome to Online for Authors, a space where we delve into the stories and minds behind some of the most compelling books and authors of today. I’m Teri, your host, and in this edition, we had the pleasure of having a conversation with Margaret Philbrick, an eminent author whose latest work, "House of Honor," takes us on an exciting journey through one of history's most intriguing unsolved art heists.
Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionCaptivating Story of House of Honor
In our chat, Margaret unveils the fascinating origins of her novel. "House of Honor" is inspired by the real-life 1969 heist of a Caravaggio nativity painting—an event steeped in mystery, given its unresolved status as one of the top unsolved art crimes, akin to the Gardner Museum heist. With Margaret's passion for art and storytelling, this novel is not just a fictional tale but an invitation to ponder on the real events that cloud the art world.
The Art of Weaving Research with Fiction
Margaret’s journey in crafting this narrative involved an extensive three-year research period studying the mafia, the Vatican, and the interconnectedness of powerful Italian families. This led her to examine the tumultuous life and immense influence of Caravaggio, setting the foundation for her novel.
Margaret shared the trials and rewards of her in-depth research process, which included sifting through books, attending exhibitions, and even visiting the world-renowned Victoria and Albert Museum. Her dedication to authenticity shines through in the book, providing readers with an immersive experience.
Themes and Character Development
Margaret emphasizes that "House of Honor" explores profound themes such as family, loyalty, and love. Through her brilliantly crafted characters, she illuminates these universal themes by juxtaposing the light and darkness of their lives—a concept influenced by Caravaggio's iconic art style.
Margaret's Literary Journey and Future Plans
This isn’t Margaret’s first venture into blending art with fiction; her previous novel centered around music. True to her creative spirit, Margaret plans to continue her artistic exploration by crafting a novel about dance, inspired by her daughter's career in ballet.
Margaret Philbrick’s "House of Honor" is a masterpiece that not only entertains but also prompts readers to reflect on art, history, and personal relationships. Book Review: Pain Pumpernickel and Profound Forgiveness
Pain, Pumpernickel, & Profound Forgiveness is a beautiful memoir written by Rosanne D'Ausilio. Through the use of short essays, Rosanne helps us understand her relationship with her father - and her mother - the good and the not-so-good.As I read, I often felt that Rosanne learned the lessons of the book - love doesn't always look like we think it will, we can change how we see things, compassion is possible even when hurting, and you can be at peace with your past - as she wrote down her memories. Her surprise at what she found was evident!
Rosanne's tales are full of what she calls Divine Interventions - times where logic doesn't adequately explain the outcomes and miracles abound. And through these Divine Interventions, Rosanne learns so much about her father, herself, and their often-troubled relationship.
As someone who has struggled with familial relationships, I enjoyed watching the author discover that there is more than one way to see the past - and how you think about the past is entirely up to you! This is a quick, easy read that will leave you thinking deeply.

Polish Your Manuscript: Top Editing Fixes Every Indie Author Should Make with Editor Katie Chambers
In our recent episode of Online for Authors, I had the pleasure of chatting with Katie Chambers, a seasoned editor with a passion for helping indie authors fine-tune their manuscripts. If you're an author, especially a first-timer navigating the indie publishing world, this blog post is packed with valuable insights straight from our conversation.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionMeet Katie Chambers
Katie Chambers began her career as an English teacher, where her love for teaching found her delving into editing. Today, she is not only an editor but also runs an agency with a team trained in her signature editing style. Katie works extensively with indie authors, helping them polish their manuscripts to perfection.
Common Manuscript Mistakes and How to Fix Them
Katie highlighted several common mistakes that appear in indie manuscripts and offered practical advice for fixing them:
Dialogue Tags and Punctuation
One frequent mistake is confusion around dialogue tags. Remember, verbs of speech such as "said" or "yelled" should be followed by commas, while action beats like “laughed” require a period. Cleaning up these small errors can reduce editing costs and streamline the process.
Dangling Modifiers
Misplaced modifiers can create amusing yet confusing sentences. The key is to ensure the subject performing the action directly follows introductory phrases. Katie advises not to fear ING phrases; just use them correctly.
Ellipses vs. M Dashes
Use ellipses for trailing off and M dashes for interruptions. Distinguishing these in dialogue ensures clarity and reflects natural speech patterns.
Filter Words
Words like "realized," "thought," and "knew" act as narrative filters. Readers prefer to experience events directly. Scrutinize your manuscript for these filters and replace them to create a more immersive experience.
Big Picture Considerations
Info Dumping
Instead of overwhelming readers with lengthy expositions, weave necessary information into character thoughts and actions. This will keep your narrative engaging and fluid.
Head Hopping
Head hopping, or shifting perspectives within a scene without clear breaks, can disorient readers. Stick with one point of view per scene or use clear scene breaks when switching perspectives.
Show Don't Tell
Katie emphasized the importance of showing over telling to engage readers emotionally.
Resources for Authors
Katie recommends invaluable resources for further learning:

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, Second Edition: How to Edit Yourself Into Print by Renni Browne and Dave King:
Paperback: https://amzn.to/3FnUogM
Kindle: https://amzn.to/43pRRus
As Katie succinctly put it, the cleaner your manuscript when it reaches an editor, the better the final product will be. Editing is not just about correcting errors; it’s about elevating your storytelling.

Book Review: The Singer Sisters
The Singer Sisters by Sarah Seltzer is a women's fiction with a dash of musical historical fiction thrown in for good measure. If you love a good family saga filled with generational expectations, family secrets, addictions, mental health issues, unplanned pregnancies, adoption, abortion, sexual orientation, and mother/daughter struggles, then this is the novel for you.The key players are Judie and her sister Sylvia, folk singers who made a name in the 1960s and Emma, who is Judie's daughter and wants to make her own musical mark in the world- along with a great cast of secondary characters who give the book a beautiful flavor. Against the backdrop of a musical family, we soon become embroiled in family drama. As Emma begins her journey toward fame, she learns lessons about herself, her life, and her mother. And despite this story being about a famous family, it could be about you. It seems that all families have their love, secrets, shame, and problems!
I loved the nods to famous singers from the 1960s who were trying to be the next great Dylan as well as singers from the 1990s who were angry, combat boot wearing women trying to show the world how little had changed. But mostly, I loved moving along life with a family that was just trying to make it work. This is definitely a must-read!

From Cassette to Manuscript: A Historical Fiction Journey with Author Roni Robbins
Welcome to the Online for Authors blog, where we delve deeper into the lives and works of remarkable authors. Today, we're exploring the journey of Roni Robbins, author of the compelling novel "Hands of Gold." During our recent podcast episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Roni about her creative process, and the fascinating real-life events that inspired her work.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionRoni Robbins brings a unique blend of journalism and fiction to her storytelling, crafting narratives that interweave real historical events with creative storytelling. A seasoned journalist, Roni's interest in storytelling extends beyond mere facts, allowing her the flexibility to explore emotional truths within historical contexts.
The Story Behind "Hands of Gold"
Roni's novel, "Hands of Gold," is a captivating tale inspired by her grandfather's life. Roni's grandfather left behind cassette tapes recounting his incredible experiences, which included surviving tuberculosis and living through historical upheavals in both Europe and America. The novel portrays an everyday hero's journey, mirroring the immigrant and ethnic family struggles that resonate with so many.
Choosing Fiction: Creative License vs. Memoir
During our conversation, Roni explained her decision to opt for a fictional account rather than a straightforward memoir. The choice allowed her to protect her family's privacy while granting her the creative freedom to imagine dialogues and scenarios that history did not precisely record. By changing names and details, Roni could tell a richer story without feeling constrained by accuracy—a challenge given her journalistic background.
Researching the Past
Roni's dedication to authenticity shines through her detailed research. While much of the source material came from her grandfather's tapes, Roni also delved into historical records by visiting archives and family history centers. This rigorous approach not only added depth to her narrative but also provided her satisfaction in knowing her fictional work stood on a foundation of truth.
The Magic of Discovery in Research
For Roni, moments of discovery during research are magical. Finding historical tidbits that perfectly fit into the narrative allows her to connect the past with her storytelling seamlessly. As readers, we benefit from Roni's ability to weave historical accuracy into an engaging narrative that educates while it entertains.
Reflection on Personal and Cultural Heritage
Family and Jewish culture are central themes in Roni's work. Reflecting on her family's heritage and struggles, she provides readers with insights into the Jewish experience across different historical moments. By doing so, Roni hopes to open minds and encourage understanding of an ethnic history that is both personal and universal.
What Comes Next for Roni Robbins
Roni is currently working on a new book inspired by her father's life, again taking a fictional approach to tell a story rich with personal and historical significance. Under the tentative title "A Mighty Arm," this new project promises to continue Roni's exploration of family legacies and the marks they leave on history.

Book Review: Moonshine
Moonshine: Path of the Raven by Max Shippee is a wonderful young adult fiction novel full of magical realism. I'm going to be honest - I rarely read werewolf books because I find them to be too fantastical for my liking. However, this novel kept me captivated from the beginning. I immediately fell in love with Sam, the young boy on the brink of manhood, and his protector, John. Plus, the extended cast of characters is just as enchanting!Sam starts out life as a sharecropper in the early 1900s. His family still works on the plantation that used to hold them as slaves. Although poor, Sam believes his life is good. However, everything changes the day the young plantation daughter notices Sam working. Although his life was destined to change anyway as the next Jack for a coven in upstate New York, Sam soon finds himself without a family or a place to call home. Fortunately for Sam, he soon learns that he doesn't have to journey through life alone.
I love that many of the characters we meet are incarnations of legendary figures - King Author, John Henry, and more! This is a great read.

Many readers might find it fascinating that Michelle’s venture into novel writing wasn't initially planned in detail. Her approach is organically creative, developing stories as inspiration hits—a technique known as 'pantsing.' With a natural inclination towards morning writing sessions, she finds herself most productive in those early hours.
Roots and Real-Life Inspirations
Michelle candidly shared the origins of her book, explaining how real-life visits to a dog park during the pandemic inspired the settings and vibes of "Dog Park." It’s a blend of observed humanity and imagined storylines, showcasing her ability to transform everyday encounters into compelling fiction.
From Memoir to Novels: A Personal Evolution
Transitioning from a personal memoir, "Daughter of the Drunk at the Bar," to the fictional world, Michelle tapped into themes of family and identity that resonate across her works. Though these ventures differ in genre and storytelling, the emotional depth finds a common thread.
Upcoming Adventures in Storytelling
Not one to rest on her laurels, Michelle let us in on her next project, a novel about a woman returning to the workforce under challenging circumstances. This narrative promises to explore complex family dynamics and professional trials, all written with her signature attentiveness to character and context.
