Online for Authors Episode 6-7-25

Ten Misconceptions About Publishing You Can't Afford to Ignore with Author W. Terry WhalinPictureI recently had the pleasure of welcoming W. Terry Whalin to the Online for Authors podcast, and let me tell you—this conversation was a masterclass in what it really means to be an author in today’s publishing world.

Terry isn’t just someone talking about books—he’s someone who’s lived every angle of the publishing industry. He’s authored over 60 books, written for more than 50 magazines, served as an agent, and now works as an acquisitions editor for Morgan James Publishing. He’s been inside top literary agencies and publishing houses in New York City and knows firsthand what gets a book from manuscript to bookstore shelf.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video Version10 Publishing Myths: Real Talk for Aspiring Authors

His book, 10 Publishing Myths, tackles the unrealistic expectations so many of us have when we set out on our publishing journeys. What I love most about Terry’s approach is that he doesn’t just bust myths and leave us hanging. Each chapter includes actionable steps he calls “Myth Buster Actions” (or MBAs) that help writers take control where they can. Whether you're traditionally published, self-published, or still dreaming, this book offers tools you can use today.

The Myth That Hits Hardest: “I’ll Make a Lot of Money”

One of my favorite takeaways from our conversation was Terry’s reminder that writing a book doesn’t mean instant fame or fortune. In fact, his number one myth? That publishing a book means you’ll make a lot of money. Terry stresses the importance of understanding why you're writing. Whether it’s to establish credibility, open doors to speaking engagements, or simply tell a powerful story, your goals should go beyond sales numbers.

Marketing Is Your Job—Not Just the Publisher’s

He also emphasizes that marketing is our job as authors. Your publisher might care about your book, but no one will ever be as passionate about promoting it as you are. Terry’s wakeup call came in 2007 when he decided to take 100% responsibility for his own success—and it changed everything. He’s now one of the top 27 content producers in a world of over 600 million blogs. Why? Because he blogs every week. He’s consistent, and that consistency has built an audience that trusts him.

Encouragement with a Dose of Reality

Terry’s advice is grounded, realistic, and hopeful. He reminded us that this is one of the best times in human history to be a writer. With just a phone and some hustle, you can reach people around the globe. But it doesn’t happen by magic—it takes action, persistence, and realistic expectations.

Bonus Content: The 11th Myth (Hint: It Involves Oprah)

And if you're wondering about his sense of humor, he includes an “11th myth” for free—just head to terrylinks.com/11thmyth for a chuckle (and a good dose of truth about sending your book to Oprah).

How to Get the Book—and Why You Should

You can continue this conversation on Novels N Latter Book Club on Facebook, where you will have the chance to win a free copy of 10 Publishing Myths. Do yourself a favor—listen to the episode, grab the book, and start busting those myths. Your writing career will thank you.

Book Review: The Mahdi

Picture The Mahdi by Robert Cook is a must-read political thriller that will keep you riveted to your seat. Let me set the stage: Bedouin Muslims are angry with Israeli Jews for taking their lands on the West Bank. Alex, also known as Cooch to those in the CIA where he has served, and Kuftahni to the Bedouin tribes of which he is a part due to his heritage, is a liberal Muslim who is charged to fix the problem in Israel.

His Marine and CIA training, along with his girlfriend, Kaitlyn, the smartest person in the world, may be the right combination to bring peace to the Middle East. But nothing is easy in a world where ideologies clash.

Robert brings intense suspense into each chapter, making you wonder if Kaitlyn, and her EMP capabilities will survive, if Cooch has finally met his match, and if the world will devolve into a war like one never seen before. One also wonders if Cooch will take the title of Mahdi to heart - and if so, will he use the power for good or for evil.

This was a can't-put-down book, and I highly recommend this read!

Online for Authors Episode 6-3-25

Battleground America: A Military Thriller of Division and Defiance with Author William R DouglasPictureWilliam R. Douglas, author of "The Sum of All Our Anger: Civil War 2.0," recently graced the Online for Authors podcast with his presence, sharing insights into his latest thought-provoking work that challenges readers to reflect on the current political landscape. This episode dives deep into the inspiration behind the book and the poignant messages within its pages.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionA Glimpse into the Future
In "The Sum of All Our Anger: Civil War 2.0," Douglas weaves a narrative that starts in the year 2061, following the election of the first openly socialist president in the United States. This event triggers a catastrophic sequence, leading to a second civil war, serving as a stark warning against unchecked political division and acrimony.

The Genesis of a Gripping Tale

The concept for this chilling narrative emerged from Douglas's previous work, "The Death and Resurrection of Baseball." During numerous podcast interviews, Douglas was often urged to explore the civil war he mentioned in his first book. Despite initial reluctance—due to the unsettling subject matter—the persistent political headlines nudged him to confront the idea head-on, creating a narrative designed to provoke critical reflection and dialogue.

Characters That Resonate

Among the characters Douglas enjoyed crafting, Bishop King and Governor Mary Whitfield stand out. Bishop King personifies the moderacy often seen in American governance, advocating for a centrist approach amid opposing extreme ideologies. On the other hand, Mary Whitfield exemplifies the commitment to uphold the Constitution, leading one side of the brewing conflict.

Conversely, President Devin Cyrus presented challenges to Douglas due to Cyrus's socialist ideals, diametrically opposing his own beliefs. Yet, Douglas acknowledges the importance of exploring such perspectives, as they reflect growing interests within parts of American society.

A Disturbing Mirror

Douglas hopes readers walk away with a sense of responsibility, urging them to introspect on their actions and roles in societal divisions. The narrative invites readers to uphold critical thinking, engagement in dialogue, and the willingness to agree to disagree—aiming to mitigate the conditions that could lead to such grim futures.

The Influence of Media and AI

Reflecting on the impact of media and artificial intelligence, William and I note the growing challenge of discerning truth in a landscape where misinformation can be easily fabricated. The narrative of "The Sum of All Our Anger" complements this concern, pushing readers to question sources and embrace their critical faculties.

Interactive Engagement

To continue the conversation and delve deeper into William R. Douglas's compelling narrative, readers are encouraged to join the Novels and Latte book club on Facebook. Participants also have the opportunity to win a digital copy of "The Sum of All Our Anger" by sharing their thoughts and learnings from the podcast.

William illuminates the urgent themes of his book—challenging everyone to examine the future collectively envisioned and take actionable steps to foster unity, understanding, and resilience.
Whether you stand on the left, right, or somewhere in the middle, Douglas's narrative is a wake-up call, advocating for cooperative dialogue and thoughtful reflection on the society we wish to shape.

Book Review: Against All Odds

Picture Against All Odds by Tristian Smith is a memoir, as well as a how-to manual for surviving in and fixing the foster care system.

Tristian found himself in the foster system as a young boy. Like most kids in the system, they are there through no fault of their own. These kids keep hoping to find connection and security - something that, according to Tristian, is rare to find in the current foster care system.

After helping readers understand his own story and how it felt to be pushed and pulled from home to home like an object rather than a person, he spends the second half of the book talking to kids in the system and people concerned with the system.

After reading the book, I felt an urgency to find a way to help create a better system for the kids who find themselves in need of care. I have also begun looking into being a mentor for teens as they move toward aging out of the system. And Tristian's words to kids in foster care are words for anyone who finds themself in a difficult situation.

His goal is to help others while shining a light on a broken system. Without a doubt, he did just that.

Book Review: House of Honor

Picture House of Honor by Margaret Ann Philbrick a historical thriller set in Italy. Margaret touts the book as a Godfather meets The Da Vinci Code but with a redemptive twist. I tout it as a book I couldn't put down!

Orazio Bordoni is a son of a construction magnate - but he wants nothing more than to be an artist. So, he leaves home and follows on a similar path as Caravaggio - a 16th century artist very much admired by Orazio. Before long, Orazio is caught up in slimy Vatican politics, the Sicilian mafia, and a lover with a powerful political father.

What starts out as a "job" turns into a test - one where he must prove his loyalty to the mafia. Will Orazio lose his family? His lover? His friends? His art? His life? The tale twists and turns, often leaving the reader breathless.

Margaret does an amazing job helping the reader experience the underbelly of Italy while exposing us to the world of art - all while keeping us guessing as to what will happen next. If you like a good thriller, then you'll love House of Honor.

From the outset, Robert Norris introduces us to a world shaped by the relentless spirit of his mother, an independent woman navigating the adversities of early 20th century America. "The Good Lord Willing and the Creek Don't Rise" is more than a memoir; it is a chronicle of resilience and the indomitable human spirit, touching on everything from the Great Depression to the vibrant counterculture movements of the 1960s.

A Deep Dive into Memoirs and Memories

Robert’s narrative style invites readers to journey alongside him, exploring episodes such as his mother’s adventures from North Dakota to Washington during the Depression, her unyielding battle with societal norms, and the intertwined destinies of a mother and son. The vivid storytelling promises to not only entertain but also to enlighten, as readers encounter the trials and triumphs that have defined both Norris’s life and writing.

Peeling Back Layers of History

Throughout the podcast, we further explore Robert's own tumultuous journey, from serving in the Air Force during the Vietnam War era to his eventual transition into academia abroad in Japan. In sharing these experiences, Norris paints a broader picture of the historical and cultural shifts that have influenced both his family and his own writing career.

A Tribute to an Inspirational Life

I speak passionately about Norris’s ability to bring history to life, particularly through stories of his mother, who even in her later years continued to push boundaries by learning to fly and embarking on new careers. These narratives exemplify a broader theme within the book—perseverance in the face of adversity—an inspiration for readers to pursue their own paths fearlessly.

The Author’s Next Chapter

As the conversation concludes, we delve into Robert's future projects, including his continued work on peace education and a new book capturing his reflections on life in Japan. Book Review: Hands of Gold

Picture Hands of Gold by Roni Robbins is an amazing Jewish historical fiction. According to Roni, the story is loosely based on her Hungarian grandfather, but rather than write a family memoir, she chose to write a historical fiction about Sam Fox.

We meet Sam, first at his dying wife's side, and then travel back to see him as a young boy in Hungary at the turn of the 20th century. Sam's life is never easy. From Jewish hardships in the old country, to fleeing from Hungarian conscription, to stealing into first Canada, and then the US, to illness and poverty, Sam figures out how to find joy in a life that continuously throws him lemons.

And now, after 65 years of marriage, his dying wife, Hannah, tasks him with telling their children their parents' real history - with all the secrets - even secrets they have kept from one another.

This story is a wonderful family saga, filled with Jewish history and culture, determination, and religion. I found the details fascinating and often wondered which parts were true family history and which were merely the figment of Roni's imagination. I loved the book and believe you will, too!

Book Review: Insane Possibilities

Picture (Review by Carole O'Neill)

The thought of falling down a well thirty feet and surviving is enough to make you wonder whether you had an active guardian angel keeping you alive. Toby Kellerman only new he didn’t fall. Somebody had pushed him. He was even convinced he heard footsteps behind him as he was staring into the well.

He spent the next seven weeks at the hospital in a kind of body cast on a bed that rotated every few minutes. He was only able to move his arms and watch his surroundings through an adjustable mirror. His mom stayed with him most days, but at eighteen, he was more interested in using his cell phone to check in with his friends to hear what he was missing. However, he spent most of his time trying to figure out who could have pushed him into that well. With the help of a young girl on his rehab ward, familiar with hauntings, Toby began to put the pieces together.

I don’t normally read about paranormal happenings, but even though there were definite moving objects in the hospital room, I never quite believed a ghost was causing the upset. Should he believe the police theory that one of his sisters was responsible? But which one? Grace - the popular fifteen-year-old with lots of friends, or Trinity – the eleven-year-old with special needs.

This book kept me turning the pages for the answer. Just when I believed I’d figured it all out, the next page had me convinced it was someone else. Carol Plum-Ucci has done a wonderful job of character development and certainly has gained a reader for her next novel – even if the genre is paranormal.

Book Review: If Frogs Could Fly

Picture If Frogs Could Fly by E.B. Mendel is a contemporary fiction complete with magical realism and adventure. What I found most amazing was that the book was originally written in 2016 but mirrors our recent COVID pandemic to a great degree.

The story follows Ron Levine, a journalist, along with his wife and friends. Ron is invited to head to South America to find one of the lost tribes of Israel along with a crew put together by a Jewish Rabbi. Unfortunately, the crew finds more than they bargained for, including a new disease that spreads quickly throughout the world.

EB shows us what a world with an incurable, transmittable disease might look like. He then pairs this epidemic with a 1960s style culture of drugs, trips, and music. I have to admit that I got a little lost at times and wondered what was real and what wasn't. I suspect that was what EB hoped to have happen!

If you like a book that feels like a psychedelic dream, then If Frogs Could Fly might just be for you.
