Book Review: The Conquest of Liberty

Picture The Conquest of Liberty by Kent Merrell is a detailed, many POV, Renaissance historical fiction. We follow the journey of several people - all of whom have incredible stories - and it isn't until the very end that we find out how all of these stories wind together into one. I was immediately hooked despite knowing next to nothing about the Moors, monarchs, and monks of the time.

Kent is a master at creating characters. For instance, Miguel, an archbishop's right hand man who lives in Granada should be very foreign to me. But within a few pages, I felt as if he were alive in my living room as he fled persecution, was kidnapped by pirates, and found himself questioning both his King and his Pope. Then, there is Alessandro, a young boy in the care of Balboa, the explorer, Maria, a women who fled her home and lived with the Gitanos, and Vano, the next leader of the Gitanos, not to mention Sayyida al-Hurra, a Morracan Privateer, Jalaf Morisco, a Morracan Exile, and Talavera, the Archbishop accused of heresy.

This novel is far more than a historical fiction - it contains within the pages action, adventure, mystery, and love. You won't be able to put this book down.

Online for Authors Episode 6-24-25

Amphibian Apocalypse: Battling the Frog Virus with Author EB MendelPictureHello, Teri here from Online for Authors! This week, I had the pleasure of chatting with the brilliant author EB Mendel, whose intriguing novel "If Frogs Could Fly" has captured the imaginations of readers everywhere. In our conversation, we dive deep into the magic that brings this book to life and explore the fascinating mind behind its creation.
Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionA Novel that Defies Time

Originally published in 2016, "If Frogs Could Fly" presents a unique storyline—a global pandemic, an idea conceived years before the COVID-19 outbreak. The novel unfolds with our protagonist nearly attacked by a shark, and from this suspenseful opening, the narrative takes wild twists that keep readers on their toes. Mendel explains that while the pandemic element didn't initially figure into the story, once it clicked, it became a driving force in the narrative.

The Birth of a Unique Concept

What if a virus caused people to become more frog-like? That’s a glimpse into Mendel’s inventive mind. This 'Human Amphibian Virus' serves as a medium for not only biological transformation but also a reflection on human interactions and distancing—a prophetic parallel to recent real-world events. Recalling a presidency striving for resolution amidst chaos, Mendel had unknowingly painted a mirror image of our times.

Inspirations from the Past

Growing up in the 1960s, Mendel’s novel is peppered with cultural and historical nuances from that dynamic era. He brings forward the vibrancy of the sexual revolution and the influence of drugs, subtly weaving them into his narrative. These poignant details lend authenticity and stir nostalgia, adding depth to the frantic yet colorful world of "If Frogs Could Fly."

The Journey Through Research

Exploring settings far and wide, Mendel’s research serves as a testament to his dedication. While he hasn't visited South America, his familiarity with territories like the Catskills and Miami Beach adds an authentic layer to his storytelling. Experiencing these environments firsthand, Mendel crafts worlds that are both vivid and immersive.

The Evolution of a Title

Coming up with a fitting title was no small feat for Mendel, as he agonized over multiple possibilities before "If Frogs Could Fly" came to him rather serendipitously. Symbolic of impossible scenarios, it perfectly encapsulates the fantastical essence of the book. This quirky yet compelling title promises readers a journey filled with surprise and wonder.

What Lies Ahead

Alongside his literary pursuits, Mendel is shaping another exciting creation titled "The Miraculous Adventures of Willy Maze." Expected to release this summer, this upcoming book promises readers yet another absorbing adventure through the lens of an imaginative protagonist.

Book Review: My Mother in Havana

Picture My Mother in Havana by Rebe Huntman is a profound look at a woman who lost her mother at a young age and continues to grieve for years. It isn't until she goes to Havana that she finally finds peace.

I fully expected to learn that Rebe's mother was Cuban - but she's not. However, Rebe's research about mothers and symbols of motherhood led to her Cuba where the Virgin Mary and the Cuban goddess of love, Ochún, are often intertwined. She wanted to understand this connection - and by doing so, she found healing.

Rebe started life as a dancer and choreographer, and she shines a beautiful light on Cuban dances and rituals along with their gods and saints. I was mesmerized by her ability to throw off her Western upbringing and fully immerse herself in the culture as she tried to discover what makes a mother, what defines the divine feminine, and what she remembered of her own mother.

I loved learning about the Afro-Cuban culture, their spiritual views, and the broader concept of motherhood. I think anyone who is a mother - or has a mother - will enjoy this book.

Tristian's memoir opens with an exploration of his stories from childhood in Georgia, highlighting his experiences and resilience. Tristian shares his motivations for writing "Against All Odds", emphasizing the importance of providing a voice for foster care youth, a perspective often unheard.

The Catalyst for Change

During our conversation, Tristian reflected on why he chose to vocalize his experiences. As a voracious reader in his youth, he noticed a scarcity of books recounting stories similar to his own. His decision to write became a way to acknowledge the struggles foster youth face and pay tribute to those who helped him succeed.

Guides for Change and Growth

The memoir contains practical insights for anyone looking to improve the foster care system or support those within it. Tristian shares actions individuals can take to contribute positively, such as becoming a mentor or foster parent. For people who have not experienced foster care firsthand, Tristian offers guidance on how to become allies and advocates for the system.

Quality of Foster Care

Tristian candidly discusses the challenges of being shuttled through nearly 30 foster homes and 13 schools within a decade, highlighting the systemic issues affecting foster youth. He argues for improvements in the quality of foster care, urging for compassion and understanding from foster parents. His insights stress the importance of creating stable environments that promote a foster child's development and well-being.

Building a Better Future for Foster Youth

Tristian’s book doesn’t just recount his past; it serves as a beacon for current and future foster youth. He advises them to advocate for themselves, focus on education, and listen to those who support and mentor them. Despite the obstacles, he emphasizes the power of resilience and the importance of not letting adversity define one’s future.

Tristian’s Current Endeavors

Since retiring from the Army due to a medical condition, Tristian has dedicated his life to advocacy and public service. He works with the Department of the Air Force and is pursuing further education at Johns Hopkins University. Tristian extends his advocacy through keynote speaking, serving as a CASA volunteer, and being a part of the Foster Care Review Board, all with the aim of providing better opportunities for youth in the foster care system.

Tristian Smith’s journey from a foster care youth to an advocate and author is a testament to resilience and transformation. His memoir, "Against All Odds", is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding and improving the lives of foster youth. Through his work, Tristan aims to inspire change, offering love, stability, and resources to those who need it the most.

If you’re moved by Tristan's story and want to contribute in some way, consider engaging with local initiatives or fostering conversations about foster care improvements within your community. Book Review: Dog Park

Picture (Review by Carole O'Neill)

Dog Park: Tales of Heartbreak, Laughter, Community and Hope by Michelle O'Neil is a wonderful contemporary fiction. You don’t even have to like dogs to enjoy this book. Every time I drive by the dog park in our neighborhood, I try to imagine the stories playing out among the owners.

Michelle O’Neil has captured the socialization happening within those fences. From widows using the park to prevent an otherwise lonely afternoon, to the young girl escaping the abuse of her father, each story will make you realize there is more going on than what first meets the eye. The optimism, strength and sadness I read about throughout the book gave me a new outlook on the pet owners who spend time at the park – an actual community behind the gate.

O’Neil’s characters are engaging, full of engaging backstories. I haven’t had a dog for many years, but this book has given me a reason to revisit that decision.

Harmonies and Heartbreak: A Family Saga from Folk to FuryPictureIn the words of singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, "The times, they are a-changin'," and no truer words can be used to describe the incredible narrative woven by Sarah Seltzer in her sensational book "The Singer Sisters." Sarah joined me on my podcast, Online for Authors, where we delved into the heart and soul of her writing journey, her mesmerizing characters, and the vivid stories that bind two generations through the universal language of music.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionThe Birth of a Family Saga

Sarah Seltzer’s "The Singer Sisters" is much more than a story; it’s an intricate tapestry of family, art, and generational relationships set against the vibrant backdrops of the 1960s folk era and the rock-powered 1990s. But where did this compelling family saga originate? Sarah shared that her inspiration sprouted after attending iconic folk concerts, including Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday in New York City. Seeing artists Rufus and Martha Wainwright performing with their mother, following in a lineage of musical genius, crystallized Sarah’s vision of exploring a family’s shared artistic legacy.

Themes That Resonate

This book isn’t shy about tackling heavyweight issues. From family secrets, generational expectations, addiction, mental health, to unplanned pregnancies, Sarah assured me that such themes developed organically from the passionate world of music she first set out to explore. These underlying societal issues are more than plot points—they pulse alongside the beats of the characters' lives, inviting readers to reflect on their own familial and personal challenges.

Crafting Characters with Realness

In a novel rich with personality, it’s the complex characters that make "The Singer Sisters" truly shine. I asked Sarah if her creations were inspired by real people or stemmed from her imagination. Her reply was a symphony of creativity. While nodding to inspirations like Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and Ani DeFranco, Sarah infused bits of herself and those she knows into the characters, bringing an authentic balance of temperaments to life. The daughter-mother dynamic between Emma and Judie, colored by misunderstanding and reconciliation, will ring true for anyone with familial ties.

Secrets, Struggles, and Revelations

Intertwined within the narrative are the haunting effects of family secrets—a theme Sarah explores with a nuanced understanding of their heavy, yet often protective nature. Secrets, as Sarah poignantly explained, become an entity of their own, shaping family history even when unspoken.

Writing: A Balancing Act

For aspiring writers curious about Sarah’s process, she paints a picture of flexible creativity; part structure, part spontaneity. Whether sharing her unique writing sessions in New York City or the collaborative spirit of writing with friends, Sarah’s approach encourages finding what nurtures your creativity.

What’s Next for Sarah Seltzer?

Although still in its early stages, Sarah hinted at her next project focusing more on friendship and romance. It seems we can look forward to another tapestry of human connections that will surely echo the sincerity and warmth she brings to all her work.

Sarah Seltzer’s "The Singer Sisters" is a journey through the aspirations, struggles, and triumphs of two generations. It’s a book that will make you laugh, cry, and, above all, reflect on the timeless question of legacy. To all the readers out there, I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Settle in with "The Singer Sisters" and let the melodies of Sarah's storytelling resonate within you.

Book Review: Nancy Wake

Picture I love a good historical fiction and can't resist the historical fiction when the story centers on a real-life woman! Nancy Wake by Kit Sergeant checks all my boxes!

Nancy is a woman who sees Hitler's atrocities, and rather than turn away, she determines to do what she can to stop him. Because Nancy is married to a wealthy man, she has the money and connections to help the Resistance when Northern France is under siege. She gathers food and clothing, she passes information, and eventually, she begins helping escaped prisoners find their way back to England.

But what will happen when France falls? Will 'The White Mouse' be able to continue to evade capture? Will her husband? And what will be her role?

I was captivated by Nancy and her dedication to the cause - even at the expense of her own health and safety. If you love a good WWII historical fiction with a strong women characters, then this is definitely the book for you!

The Unseen Voices of History

One of Elisabeth's passions lies in exploring the voices and stories left out of mainstream history. As an experienced researcher and former high school English teacher, she's drawn to the gaps in narratives—those compelling yet untold stories. Her work aims to give voice to those silent parts of history, a goal that's brilliantly accomplished through her rich and detailed storytelling.

Bringing Women to the Forefront

In our conversation, Elisabeth and I explored how her protagonist, Alice, manages to insert herself into situations that unveil unexpected truths about historical events. Elisabeth's knack for bringing female characters to life is not only compelling but crucial in understanding the multifaceted nature of the past. Many women were present during these historical events, yet their stories often remain untold, a point that her book beautifully addresses.

Historical Research with a Fresh Perspective

Elisabeth's research is thorough and captivating. By presenting historical events with accuracy while injecting vivid imagination, she provides readers with a more holistic view of history—one that includes all those who contributed, albeit quietly. Online for Authors Episode 6-10-25

Whispers in Color: Unraveling the Mysteries with Author Amy SutoPictureHello, book enthusiasts! Today, I'm thrilled to take you on a journey with Amy Suto, the creative mind behind "The Nomad Detective." I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Amy for my podcast, Online for Authors. Our conversation was insightful, filled with stories of inspiration, writing processes, and a fascinating character that stands out in a sea of detective stories.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionMeet the Author: Amy Suto

Amy Suto is not your typical author. As a digital nomad, she has spent the last five years traveling the world, gathering experiences and stories that ultimately shaped "The Nomad Detective." Her unique lifestyle has infused vibrancy and a global essence into her work, setting her apart from many in the mystery genre.

The Inspiration behind "The Nomad Detective"

Amy's inspiration comes from her journey as a digital nomad. Her book presents a collection of short stories inspired by the intriguing tales and true crime scenarios she encountered during her travels. These stories form an enthralling narrative that follows Violet Chase, a private eye on a worldwide mission to find her missing sister. What gives Violet an edge in her detective work is her synesthesia—an ability that allows her to see auras, adding an almost mythical layer to the detective genre.

A Unique Storytelling Approach

Unlike many mystery writers who prefer a series of novels, Amy opted for a collection of short stories. This creative decision was influenced by her self-publishing freedom, allowing her to explore multiple locales—from Paris to Peru—within a single composition. This format not only enriches the narrative with diverse cultural settings but also provides readers a full spectrum of Violet's adventurous life.

Diving Deeper into Violet Chase

Violet Chase is far from perfect, which makes her relatable and human. She has been through an abusive relationship, a reality that many women, including myself, resonate with deeply. Amy captures that sense of foreboding and vulnerability beautifully in her writing, allowing readers to connect with Violet on a profound level. The character's flaws and her incredible synesthesia form a compelling juxtaposition that defines her journey across perilous landscapes and emotional terrains.

An Adventure to Remember

One of Amy's favorite short stories from the collection is "Dead Woman's Pass," inspired by her own challenging trek on the Inca Trail. This personal triumph over physical and personal hurdles enriches the narrative with authentic experiences. The story's setting in Peru offers readers a glimpse into a world filled with mystery and cultural depth, proving to be a perfect backdrop for a captivating murder mystery.

Writing Style and Process

As an experienced TV writer, Amy's structured approach to writing involves detailed outlines and disciplined deadlines set by Amazon pre-orders. Despite her adventurous lifestyle, she ensures her writing process is grounded in structure, allowing her creativity to flourish within that framework.

What’s Next for Amy Suto?

While Amy is tight-lipped about exact release dates, she assures her readers that more of Violet Chase's stories are coming soon. Her recent travels have provided a wealth of ideas, so fans of "The Nomad Detective" series have much to look forward to.

Book Review: Mutant Message Down Under

Picture
Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan is a contemporary fiction book based on Marlo's experience with an Aboriginal tribe in Australia during a 3-month walkabout. In the author message at the beginning of the book, Marlo states it is fiction. However, she also states that she did indeed go on a walkabout, away from civilization, while learning about a tribe near extinction.

Although I found it difficult to get into, once I understood that Marlo, nicknamed Mutant by the tribespeople, was going to immerse herself in their culture, I was hooked. I particularly enjoyed learning about their healing practices, their lack of the kinds of sicknesses found in modern societies, and how they communicated. Additionally, I enjoyed learning about a culture so vastly different from my own, especially one deemed primitive, unintellectual, and hardly worth noticing. I hate how one society deems another worthless and throws out all they have to offer.

There have been many people who say Marlo lied about everything and that the Aboriginal tribe she wrote about does not exist. Even if that is true, I think we can learn a lot from her words - from the lessons she gained from her walkabout.
