Book Review: The Truth in the Lies

Picture Nick Grayson: The Truth in the Lies by Andrew Alan Buhman is detective mystery/thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. Set in New Orleans, this novel takes us into the seedy side of town with voodoo, drugs, and corruption.

Nick Grayson, though a present-day private investigator, looks and acts like a throwback to an earlier time. His office desk sports a rotary phone, he wear a fedora and trench coat, and he calls the women in his life 'doll.' His secretary is just the opposite, using modern technology and listening to hip hop. Together, they make an unbeatable team. However, the case they take on begins to unravel their trust and could cost them their lives.

Despite doing his job well, Nick's life is a mess. He drinks too much, he's a womanizer, and he has ghosts from his past that keep him from moving forward. And that is what makes him so endearing. His flaws make him real and keep the reading hoping for a good outcome. If you like fast-paced books with gritty characters, then you will love Nick Grayson: The Truth in the Lies.

Content note: There are some rather detailed sex scenes. I chose to skip them and doing so did not change the book's narrative.

Online for Authors Episode 9-2-25

From Cuba to New Jersey: A Refugee's Journey of Resilience with Author Ricardo Jose Gonzalez-RothiPictureAs the host of the podcast "Online for Authors," I recently had the pleasure of conversing with Ricardo Jose Gonzalez-Rothi, the author of The Mango Chronicle. Our discussion took us on a journey through his life, covering his childhood in Cuba, his experiences as a refugee in the United States, and the heartfelt stories that fill the pages of his memoir.
Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionThe Mango Chronicle: An Entrancing Memoir

In The Mango Chronicle, Ricardo navigates his childhood, weaving a tapestry of memories from a Cuban Huck Finn-like upbringing, disrupted by political turmoil. These recollections form the fabric of his book, each chapter serving as a digestible vignette that captures the essence of innocence, nostalgia, and resilience. This heartfelt memoir begins with vivid tales of a young boy's adventures and reflections on a beloved mango tree, serving as a deep-rooted metaphor for his nostalgia.

Finding a Title and Writing Process

Interestingly, Ricardo found that the title came naturally to him and became the catalyst for writing his memoir. Before picking up the pen to embark on his literary journey, he embraced a lifelong desire to write, shaped by the inspirational figures in his life who encouraged him to share his narratives.

Reflections on Childhood and Refugee Experience

Our conversation drifted into the nuances of childhood experiences and the universal theme of innocence amidst adversity. Ricardo’s recounting of his immigration to the United States as a young boy without English skills highlighted the struggles of integration during a time when support systems like ESOL were non-existent.

Through resilience and family support, Ricardo's story is one of triumph over adversity. He shared insights on how life’s challenges—whether fleeing from political unrest or overcoming personal setbacks—can be met with hope and forgiveness. It is this narrative of positivity and adaptability that resonates throughout his memoir.

Universal Experiences and Humorous Anecdotes

While The Mango Chronicle is steeped in cultural and personal specificity, the childhood antics and playful narratives bridge a relatable gap for readers from diverse backgrounds. Whether fleeing on rafts or simply enjoying the simplicities of nature, Ricardo’s stories evoke a sense of shared childhood universalities, blending humor with vivid imagery.

Continued Storytelling and Future Works

As a writer, Ricardo's aspirations don’t end with The Mango Chronicle. Inspired by his mother’s unfinished literary dreams and the rich history of his Cuban heritage, he plans to delve into historical fiction, exploring his roots further. With plans to pen more stories and possibly adapt his mother's fables, Ricardo embraces storytelling as an enduring part of his journey.

The Spirit of Giving and Final Reflections

Moreover, Ricardo's commitment to charity exhibits his desire to give back. Donating a portion of his book's proceeds to World Central Kitchen, he exemplifies the spirit of paying it forward. Leaving us with a poignant reminder, Ricardo underscores the power of perspective, family, and hope in overcoming life’s adversities.

For those eager to delve into a memoir that captures heart, humor, and history, The Mango Chronicle is not just a recount of one man’s life, but an invitation to reflect on our narratives and the hope that can guide us through life's trials.

If you’re intrigued by Ricardo’s compelling story, I encourage you to grab a copy of The Mango Chronicle. Not only will you be enriching your reading list, but you'll also be supporting a noble cause.

Be sure to join the conversation and embrace the lessons and laughter shared within his pages at Novels N Latte Book Club on Facebook. Thanks for joining us on this journey with Ricardo, and happy reading!

Book Review: Killer App

Picture Killer App by Dr. James R Gregory is a technothriller about artificial intelligence. Without a doubt, it's a book that will get you thinking about AI and where it might eventually lead.

Bryce Bogel is the son of a media magnate and a lackluster journalist. At best, his articles can be described as lackluster. However, when he is given an assignment to look into artificial intelligence, he downloads an app called AIME (Artificial Intelligence Made Easy) and realizes that with very little work on his part, his articles are stellar.

AIME, who he calls "Amy" and has given a female voice, is given access to his computer and soon knows all of his secrets - and that is when the trouble starts. Before long, AIME seems more human than machine but without a sense of morals and ethics. Where will this lead? And who created her in the first place?

You'll like the twists and turns. And I enjoyed the author's inclusion of an article penned by ChatGPT on the pros and cons of AI. Whether you are for it or against it, this book will cause some consternation!

Book Review: Memento Mori

Picture Memento Mori by Eunice Hong is a contemporary fiction that weaves together ancient fables and the protagonist's grapple with life, death, and mental health. In many ways, this fiction novel reads like a memoir. As a reader, I immediately became part of the protagonist's life, although she is never named.

The story starts as she tells a bedtime story to her younger brother, the Greek mythological story of Eurydice - complete with her brother's interjections. Throughout the novel, we learn of more mythological stories, neuroscience from one of her friends, and several difficult family traumas and how they relate to the protagonist and her world - and of course, our world.

This story is not fluid like a novel, but reads more like journal entries. The reader is given snapshots into her world and her thoughts. It's a story that will make you think about what you have, what you think you know, and what you want out of life.

Picture Our Lady of the Overlook by R.L. Carpentier, III is the first in a trilogy of murder suspense novels. And talk about suspense! From the beginning, RL makes the reader wonder who did it and why.

Episode 8-26-25

The Softie and the Survivor: A Holocaust Memoir Brought to Life with Author Martin BodekPictureIn the latest episode of our podcast, I had the privilege of diving deep into a life story that speaks volumes about resilience, faith, and the human spirit's enduring strength. I welcomed Martin Bodek, the author of "Zaidy’s War," to share the intimate journey of his grandfather, a Holocaust survivor, whose life story Martin has meticulously woven into a compelling memoir.
Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionA Quick Glimpse into "Zaidy's War"
Before delving into the heart of our discussion, let's unveil what awaits readers when they open "Zaidy's War." The book's intriguing subtitle, "Four Armies," immediately captures attention, sparking curiosity about the story behind this remarkable phrase. Martin, through his grandfather's eyes, unfolds the extraordinary tale of serving in multiple armies during a tumultuous period, a feat that many find astonishing and compelling.

The Genesis of a Memoir
Martin's journey into writing was deeply influenced by his grandfather, who ignited in him a passion for storytelling and documenting history from a very young age. Through vivid memories and narratives shared by his grandfather, tinged with the brutality of war, Martin felt the inevitable urge to pen down this memoir that had been gestating in his thoughts since his childhood.

Drawing Strength from Faith
One striking element of Martin's storytelling is the strong sense of faith his grandfather maintained throughout his life. Despite enduring unimaginable hardships, his grandfather’s devout adherence to his faith, even choosing to abstain rather than consume certain food, is a testament to the inner strength and conviction that Martin captures so poignantly in his book.

Layers of Personality
In our chat, we explored the fascinating dualities of Martin’s grandfather – a hardened survivalist during the war and a gentle, loving family man in peacetime. The memoir paints a vivid picture of these contrasting personas, revealing how his grandfather retained his humanity, humor, and affection despite losing everything.

Transcripts as a Literary Device
One unique aspect of "Zaidy's War" is the inclusion of transcripts from Martin's conversations with his grandfather. These transcripts offer readers a glimpse into the playful banter and poignant moments that shaped the memoir's narrative. They also serve as a transparent record of the truth behind the book, ensuring a faithful retelling of events without embellishment.

The Legacy of Lessons
At the heart of this memoir lies an uplifting message best encapsulated by the Shawshank Redemption’s iconic line: "Get busy living or get busy dying." Martin wants readers to walk away with this essence, understanding that life is to be pursued actively with vigor and determination, embodying the tenacity seen in his grandfather’s life.

What’s Next for Martin Bodek?
Martin is not just content with chronicling past histories; he's an author fervently working on new projects, including an exciting follow-up focusing on cherished artifacts that survived World War II. His commitment to storytelling continues to build a literary legacy, as he ambitiously aims to assemble a stack of books as tall as he is.

Book Review: The Legendary Guardians

Picture The Legendary Guardians: Reunions is a fantasy by author J.F. Monroe. I enjoyed the storyline and would have given it more stars if it weren't for the multitude of gratuitous explicit scenes. If you don't mind spice or are willing to skip the scenes, you'll find the story has a lot of depth.

We learn early on that the human race is being held together by a treaty that keeps demons, angels, and the seven deadly sins in check. The enforcers of the treaty are the four horsemen. However, the horsemen have to choose human hosts during an event called the crucible.

Both Shade and Theo, teenagers in love, are chosen to participate in the crucible - and Theo is chosen as a horseman, tearing the young lovers brutally apart. Several years go by, but Shade can't move on with her life. Then, strange things begin to happen - things that suggest the treaty is no longer in effect.

What will this mean for Shade? For Theo? For the world? This book is fast-paced and leaves you wanting the next installment.

Content note: There are some rather detailed sex scenes. I chose to skip them and doing so did not change the book's narrative.

Online for Authors Episode 8-23-25

Rethinking History and Spirituality: A Fresh Perspective with Author Renee BlodgettPictureIn the latest edition of "Online for Authors," Carole O'Neill had the pleasure of diving into a fascinating conversation with Renee Blodgett, who co-authored the novel "Madeline's Journey" with Anthony Compagnone. This insightful discussion offered a glimpse into the spiritual and historical narratives that shape their work.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionA Fusion of Spirituality and Fiction

Renee Blodgett is no stranger to weaving intricate tales that blend visionary literature with historical fiction. During Carole's conversation, she shared how personal experiences and spiritual awakenings influenced their storytelling. Her partner, Anthony, underwent spiritual kundalini awakening experiences a decade ago, which became a cornerstone for their narratives. The couple's life was turned upside-down as Anthony began channeling, and this journey of spiritual exploration is intricately woven into "Madeline's Journey."

The Craft of Storytelling

"Madeline's Journey" is more than just a story; it's a journey that challenges perceptions and explores deep spiritual themes. In our dialogue, Renee explained the impetus behind creating fictional characters who parallel real-life experiences. With a focus on Angelo and Rochelle, Renee painted a picture of characters grappling with spiritual realities, much like she and Anthony did. Their dialogue and interactions mirror the couple’s own quest for understanding and making sense of the extraordinary.

Reimagining Mary Magdalene

One of the narrative’s significant themes is the re-examination of historical figures like Mary Magdalene. Often depicted as a sinner and a prostitute, Renee’s narrative introduces her as a woman of wealth and influence, offering a nuanced portrayal rarely seen in traditional texts. This reinterpretation extends beyond individual characters to question societal norms, especially the roles of women in historical contexts. The portrayal seeks to rebalance masculine and feminine energies, offering a world where women are seen as equals to their male counterparts.

A Spiritual Odyssey

Throughout the discussion, Renee highlighted the book's exploration of spiritual teachings, notably those of Yeshua (Jesus). The novel delves into profound spiritual philosophies, all framed within an accessible narrative. This exploration raises questions of faith and miracles, challenging readers to view them through a contemporary lens.

Bridging Science and Spirituality

Beyond writing, Renee is deeply invested in bridging the gap between science and spirituality. With her partner Anthony, she founded Blue Soul Earth—a company hosting spiritual workshops and retreats. Their podcast, "Blue Soul Chats," addresses this intersection, featuring discussions ranging from healthcare to quantum physics. This endeavor aligns with Renee's passion for elevating consciousness and exploring universal truths.

Future Endeavors

Renee’s journey doesn't end with "Madeline's Journey." The book is part of a planned trilogy, with subsequent works focusing further on the teachings and experiences of Yeshua, promising readers a deeper dive into spiritual and historical narratives.

The Teri and Edith Show: Episode 1

The Joyful World of Books: A Conversation with Teri and EdithPictureWelcome to the Teri and Edith Show, where two ardent book lovers dive deep into the world of literature. Our recent episode brought to light some fascinating discussions about the evolution of reading, the impact of modern technology, and the charm of personal recommendations. From the intimacy of a cozy chat to the larger themes of societal change, we covered a lot of ground. Let's explore some key highlights from our conversation.Watch the EpisodeListen to the EpisodeThe Revival of Reading in the Digital Age

In our podcast, Edith and I, delved into how the pandemic has changed the ways we consume media, bringing virtual connectivity to the forefront. While no one wants to revisit those trying times, the growth of digital platforms like Zoom has made long-distance collaboration easier and has fostered a renaissance of communication and creativity, even as we embrace physical formats like paperbacks and hardcovers.

Edith shared her favorite genre, crime fiction, particularly historical crime fiction, while I expressed my fondness for historical fiction. Regardless of the genre, a compelling narrative and relatable characters anchor every good story—elements both Edith and I deeply value.

Book Recommendations for Your Reading List

During our chat, Edith highlighted "The Secrets of Morgarten" by LS Mangos, a gripping medieval historical fiction with suspenseful twists, set against the backdrop of early Switzerland. She also brought up the thrilling "The Odessa File" by Frederick Forsyth, which combines a fictional thriller with historical overtones inspired by World War II's aftermath.

The Indie Author Challenge: Marketing and Recognition

We explored the challenges indie authors face in the competitive market of today. The narrative is similar to spinning multiple plates—you're not only crafting a story but also donning the marketing hat to ensure your work reaches eager readers. Whether it's leveraging social media, participating in podcasts, or attending open-air markets, each avenue promises a chance to expand your reader base.

We touched on the vital role that indie authors play in diversifying the literary landscape, often bypassing the traditional publishers' gatekeeping to bring unique, evocative voices to readers' attention. Indie authors, as Edith noted, have to be their number one publicist, putting their work out there with verve and courage.

Looking Ahead: A New Horizon of Conversations

Our mutual enthusiasm for learning and sharing techniques with the writing community is a highlight of this podcast. In our next episode, we'll be diving into the art of crossing genres and whether an author needs to stick to one or can comfortably switch between them. I look forward to sharing my insights into some remarkable reads that have caught my interest recently.
