Book Review: Margaret of Thibodaux
(Review by Carole O'Neill)14-year-old Margaret is not going to let her father erase the memory of her deceased mother by bringing another woman (certainly not a stepmother) into their home. Her best friend, Honey tries to convince her there’s nothing to worry about. The new woman is a doctor after all, loved by the entire town. But for the past six years her mother has appeared at her feet and lulled her to sleep with her favorite lullaby. Margaret is convinced that couldn’t possibly continue if another woman occupies the master bedroom.
Jo Taylor masters this coming-of-age story which takes place in Louisiana during the summer of 1974. You can almost feel the heat of the bayou as Margaret and her friends solve the problems of the world on the swings at the water’s edge.
The local town medium is the one person Margaret feels can help her contact her mother to make sure their routine won’t change. But no medium, or talk with friends, or even pleading with her father can assure her things will be fine. It isn’t until she finds a poem at her mother’s grave that she begins on a path to a solution she can live with.
This is a story you’ll want to put on your TBR list.

Memoir Magic: The Art of Telling Your Truth Without Regret with Author Meg Calvin
Writing a memoir is no small feat. It’s a journey into your past, a reflection of personal growth, and a vulnerable offering to readers. During my enlightening conversation with Meg Calvin on the "Online for Authors" podcast, we delved into the intricacies of memoir writing, providing valuable insights for both novices and seasoned writers.
Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionUnderstanding the Memoir Difference
Memoir writing isn't just about recounting your life story. It's about choosing the moments that define your personal arc. As Meg pointed out, a significant distinction is asking whether you need to forgive someone to tell your story, and how past narratives can transform into cathartic experiences for both the writer and the reader.
Identifying Your Arc
As memoir authors, we are the protagonists of our stories. Recognizing the arc of your journey—your transformation from one state to another—is crucial. Whether it's from an anxious soul to a confident writer or rediscovering connections after decades, understanding your character arc helps determine which vignettes to include in your memoir.
Navigating Writer’s Block
Meg introduced us to "MIRE," a concept that outlines the blocks most authors face: Mindfulness, Identity, Rejection, and Emotions. These blocks are particularly prevalent in memoir writing. Identifying and overcoming these hurdles is key in laying out an effective and honest narrative.
Crafting a Well-Rounded Narrative
A robust memoir balances light and dark, showcasing the complete spectrum of your experiences. It's about illustrating the human condition through hardships and triumphs alike. Reflect on whether your narrative includes a fair representation of all aspects of your journey. Remember, while it's important to present your struggles, it's equally vital to share moments of lightness and redemption.
Dynamic Characters in Your Story
A memoir thrives on connections. List the influential figures in your journey—those who were static versus dynamic characters. Understanding their role in your transformation can determine how prominently they feature in your story.
Timing Your Memoir
Timing plays a critical role in memoir writing. As Meg and I discussed, it’s essential to be in the right space emotionally. If the defining events of your life are still fresh and cloaked in intensity, it might be best to wait until you're ready to view them from a space of light, rather than darkness.
Dealing with Sensitive Content
One of the poignant insights from our discussion was about handling sensitive topics. Sometimes, the specifics, like names, aren't necessary to convey the impact of events. Focus on your perspective and the subsequent change rather than on expository detail.
Seeking Guidance
Embarking on the memoir journey can be daunting, but resources and guides abound. As Meg shared, her coaching assists authors in clarifying their story’s focus and overcoming personal inhibitions. Whether through professional guidance or personal reflection, take the steps necessary to bring clarity to your narrative's objective.
Reflecting on your life through writing is transformative. By understanding your unique arc, balancing narratives, and timing your endeavors, you can craft a memoir that's not only healing but impactful for readers. For budding memoirists, remember, your story has the power to inspire and illuminate others. If you're ready to embark on this journey, consider reaching out to experts like Meg Calvin or utilizing available resources to guide your process.

Book Review: The Body Remembers
The Body Remembers by Maureen Sherbondy is a book of poetry that looks at the life of women through the eyes of their bodies. I enjoyed several of these poems and saw my own life in the words.I do want to say that I am not typically a reader of poetry and do not feel that I am qualified to review and rate a book of poetry. I know nothing of poetry elements like structure, sound devices, or poetic techniques. I don't know if the imagery met some level of standard or if the meter was right.
However, I do know that I felt the body's response to have a caesarean section, and later to having a hysterectomy. I felt fear, longing, hope, despair, love - all the emotions that live inside my own body and throughout my own life. I felt that Maureen understood me in ways that often go unnoticed. And if this was her goal, then she succeeded.
Even if, like me, poetry is not your go-to genre, I recommend this volume.

From Farm Fields to Divine Encounters: A Journey Through Connected Tales with Author Ted Aukerman
Today on Online for Authors, I had an insightful conversation with Ted Aukerman, the creative mind behind "A Farm Boy, A Tomboy, Jesus Freaks, and Divine Appointments." Ted's journey into writing is as intriguing as his novel, and I am thrilled to share the highlights of our discussion with you.
Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionIntroduction to Ted Aukerman and His Work
Ted Aukerman's book is an unusual yet captivating collection of four novellas woven into one cohesive narrative. Throughout our conversation, Ted shared the genesis of his unique format. He described the book as a confluence of distinct stories with character crossovers that culminate in an intertwining conclusion, bringing clarity to seemingly disconnected tales. This storytelling approach is a reflection of Ted's unorganized yet imaginative thought process—a style he embraces wholeheartedly as a musician and now, an author.
The Genesis of a Storyteller
Ted's journey into storytelling began unexpectedly, sparked by a surreal voice in the night, urging him to recall a childhood book report. This experience became a catalyst for his writing career, challenging him to embrace his passion for storytelling, a dream he has now fulfilled through his dynamic and vibrant stories. Notably, Ted's candid recounting of his journey underscores the serendipitous nature of divine appointments—those seemingly coincidental moments that lead to greater destinies, a theme that resonates throughout his book.
Character and Truth Interwoven
Our conversation delved into the semi-autobiographical elements of Ted's work. The characters, while fictional, hold grains of truth from Ted's own experiences. Ted shared snippets of his life that found their way into his storytelling, crafting characters that are adventurous, complex, and relatable. Of all the characters, Yvette stands out to him as a personal favorite due to her unwavering optimism and faith, inspired by a dear friend from his past. Yvette represents stability and guidance in uncertain times, a theme of mentorship and hope reverberating in each narrative arc.
Bringing Stories to Life
Ted’s engaging anecdotes from his life and the inspiration they provided for his book were fascinating. He described how unlikely encounters and personal experiences informed many scenes within his stories, transforming everyday moments into significant threads within his narratives. This blend of reality and fiction, embellished for narrative flair, gives readers an experience that is both immersive and inspiring.
What's Next for Ted Aukerman?
Looking to the future, Ted is excited about his next project titled "Letters to the Kids and the Chronicles of Ted." This work encapsulates letters exchanged with his children, a testament to their family communication and the lessons they've shared. True to Ted’s storytelling style, even this project sprinkles in truth and humor, featuring enchanting tales like his own uniquely staged future funeral.
In closing, Ted Aukerman is more than just an author—he is a storyteller whose life and experiences are interwoven with the stories he tells. For anyone interested in discovering how real-life moments can be transformed into captivating fiction, exploring Ted’s book will be a rewarding journey.

Book Review: Second Pocket First
Second Pocket First by Gregory Grosvenor is humorous mystery that is heavy on the humor. The protagonist, Issey, is a thief. However, Issey is more concerned about the artistic and creative nature of thieving rather than the items themselves - which makes him a less than ideal crook. You see, he pays more attention to his hat, his gloves, and his lock pickers than to the items he steals. And he often breaks the items on the way home because he carelessly tosses them into a duffle bag.Issey finds himself back in his hometown where the need to steal from people first began, offering the reader great flashbacks into Issey's early years, as well as getting to meet people who knew him as a child. And suddenly, through no fault of his own, he becomes a hero - and everything about his life changes.
He's respectable. He has a romantic partner. He has business cards. Now what?
I loved the humor throughout and found this to be an enjoyable read.

Book Review: The Measure of Enough
The Measure of Enough by Deonna Kay is part women's fiction and part psychological thriller. This makes The Measure of Enough a perfect read for those who love strong character development but like twists and turns. We meet Kacee who runs her own non-profit to help abused women after leaving her hometown full of broken promises, unfulfilled dreams, and an image she can't shake. Although confident at work, she is an emotional wreck on the inside. We soon learn she must use pills and alcohol to make it through her days and her nightmare filled nights.
What's the worst thing that can happen to Kacee? She is called home where she will have to face her mother and her best friend - two people she hasn't spoken to in years. And then there's the matter of her estranged father as well. Add to this the gray truck the seems to follow her everywhere, a home invasion, and cryptic messages telling her to back off.
What does it all mean? And will getting to the bottom of it help Kacee move forward in life - or embroil her further in emotions she doesn't want to face?
This is a great story that deals with mental health issues, abuse (both sexual and physical), addiction, and eating disorders. It is a definite must-read.

History Meets Heartbreak: Uncovering a Forgotten Massacre with Author Reenita M Hora
Hello, readers! Today, I am thrilled to share a captivating conversation with Reenita M. Hora, the talented author of "Vermilion Harvest," on my podcast, Online for Authors. We delved into the depths of historical fiction, discussing not only the fascinating backdrop of her novel but also the intricacies of her writing process. Let's dive into some highlights from our chat that will surely intrigue anyone with a passion for history and storytelling.Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionThe Unveiling of "Vermilion Harvest"
"Vermilion Harvest" is not just any historical fiction; it's a gripping love story rooted in a turbulent time in India's history. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of April 13, 1919, a pivotal event that spurred the Indian independence movement. Reenita eloquently intertwines a Romeo and Juliet-esque romance within this political upheaval, offering readers a deeply moving experience.
Uncovering Lesser-Known Histories
Reenita expressed her long-standing obsession with this historical event, and the relentless passion evident in her work. Growing up in India, she found the incident scarcely mentioned in textbooks, and she sought to unearth this piece of history for a global audience. Her research led her through family narratives and the haunting imagery of a piled-up stack of slippers—belongings of those who perished in the massacre—symbolizing the depth of personal attachment she holds for the story.
Historical Fiction: A Gateway to Social Commentary
Why historical fiction? For Reenita, the genre is a vehicle for exploration and expression. Tackling complex societal issues, such as racism, religious tension, and colonial legacies, her novel pushes readers to reflect on present-day parallels. By bringing these themes to light through a fictional lens, she crafts a space for readers to engage with difficult topics, fostering a dialogue that extends beyond the pages.
The Intersection of Love and History
While "Vermilion Harvest" weaves in romance, Reenita is quick to clarify that it transcends traditional romance novels. It's a love story set amidst a historical calamity, echoing narratives like "Titanic" or "Gandhi." This narrative choice invites readers to consider the potent mix of personal and political, enhancing the novel's emotional resonance.
A Call to Explore More of India
Reenita's work is not just a story; it's an invitation to delve deeper into Indian history and culture. She urges readers to seek beyond the popular and superficial images of India—Bollywood, food, weddings—to the rich, diverse experiences that tell the real story of a nation and its people.
Exciting Future Projects
With meticulous research underway, Reenita hinted at her next historical fiction endeavor. This new project will uncover the stories of early South Asian immigrants in the United States, who were plotting an armed revolution against the British Empire from San Francisco. We eagerly await another journey into the past shared from Reenita's insightful perspective.

Book Review: Born from War
Born from War by Patrick Naughton Jr is an incredible memoir that looks at the author's time in Iraq compared to his father's time in Vietnam. Despite the decades between the wars and the many differing circumstances, Patrick found astounding similarities. These similarities helped him to understand his father and 'his father's war' in ways he never thought possible.I found it very interesting that without identifiers giving me the what or when, many of the author's recollections could have been swapped with his father's. It makes me wonder if the same would be true for those who fought in WWII or Korea or any modern conflict - and if so, what do we need to learn as a people about war and what it does to soldiers and to civilians living with the consequences.
Despite 'lessons learned' from Vietnam, it appears some things do not change. Can they? Should they? And how do we get those in charge to understand what is actually happening on the front lines?
I enjoyed this book and feel like I know a bit more about Vietnam, Iraq, and the soldiers who are willing to fight for their country - even when the goals are nebulous.

A Burglar in Vermont: Comedy, Crime, and Community with Author Gregory Grosvenor
In the ever-evolving world of literature, finding a unique voice that resonates with readers is both an art and a craft. Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of hosting Gregory Grosvenor, the talented author behind "Second Pocket First," on the Online for Authors podcast. Our conversation was not just an exploration of his novel, but a deep dive into his creative process, his comedic inspirations, and the stories that shape his writing.
Listen to the Audio VersionWatch the Video VersionWelcome, Gregory Grosvenor
When Gregory joined me on the podcast, it was clear from the start that he brought with him a vibrant energy and a wonderful sense of humor. His novel "Second Pocket First" is described as a crime comedy, setting the stage for a conversation that was as enlightening as it was entertaining.
The Story Behind "Second Pocket First"
Gregory’s novel is set in Vermont and follows a slow-witted burglar named Issey who, in his strange escapades, inadvertently brings a community together. The novel, as Gregory eloquently put it, is about finding self-worth in unlikely places—an idea inspired by a mix of his personal experiences and his love for Vermont. It's a story that merges humor with serious undertones, making readers rethink the value of possessions and the essence of community.
Navigating the Genre: Crime Comedy
A highlight of our discussion was understanding how Gregory chose to embark on writing a crime comedy. He shared insights on his journey from being a serious writer with two unpublished manuscripts to embracing the comedy genre. Inspired by comedic figures like Craig Robinson of "The Office," Gregory emphasized never forcing humor but allowing contrasting images to naturally create fun moments. According to him, comedy thrives where opposing forces collide—an element he successfully harnesses in his writing.
The Art of Balancing Comedy and Story
A significant takeaway from Gregory's approach is his dedication to crafting stories with powerful voices. He shared how his writing journey taught him the importance of weaving humor without losing the narrative’s integrity. Gregory’s advice is to write sincerely and let the comedic elements arise naturally, a method that ensures the reader stays engaged while laughing along the way.
Upcoming Adventures and New Projects
Gregory let us in on his future works, teasing us with the notion of a novel featuring two female characters set in the Coastal Carolinas. Unlike his Vermont-centric novel, this forthcoming book promises to capture the dynamics of friendships and the unexpected connections between people who, at first, seem mismatched.
A Final Thought
Toward the end of our conversation, Gregory shared his love for voice-driven narratives and his vision for his characters and stories. He left us with an insightful reflection on writing and the impact of capturing human experiences in such a heartfelt, humorous way.
Stay Connected With Gregory Grosvenor
For those who want to dive deeper into Gregory’s world or have questions about his writing style and his takes on short stories or even his wrestling fandom, make sure to reach out to him through his website or Instagram. His accessibility and willingness to engage with readers are as charming as his characters.
Whether you're an avid reader of comedic novels or new to Gregory's work, "Second Pocket First" promises a delightful read filled with wit and warmth.
