Book Review: Anna's Dance
Anna's Dance: A Balkan Odyssey is a beautiful Jewish historical fiction novel by Michele Levy. I once again found myself wondering what history I was taught in school because I knew next to nothing about Balkan history, even as it related to WWII. This book helped me fill in several gaps in my knowledge.We meet Anna Rossi, an early 20's girl on a journey through the Balkan region. She starts out with one set of plans and moves to another, then another, and then another, finding herself learning more and more about prejudice and suffering. She sees a strong correlation to her own Jewish heritage - how minority suppression can lead to horrible end results, including violence.
As Anna travels, she grows from a silly girl to an experienced woman who knows her place in the world. Eventually, she learns to embrace her heritage and all that encompasses. I found the book to be quite beautiful in the telling and very relevant to our day.
Author Note: There are some sexual scenes - a couple that were a bit graphic for my taste. However, overall, these scenes were not gratuitous but helped the reader understand where Anna was in her journey.

Book Review: What She's Hiding
(Review by Carole O'Neill)This novel could almost live in the Romantic Suspense genre. While we learn early on that New York lawyer, Henry Gladstone has been fooled by his ex-wife, Leslie, it isn’t very long before we discover he would give anything to renew their relationship.
Set mainly in Manhattan, the drama eventually details calls from a Russian mobster to frighten both Henry and his former wife with threats of kidnapping, blackmail and even death. Her lies continue to be questioned until Henry is beaten and found by a private investigator hired by his best friend.
Art Bell’s well-crafted story, What She’s Hiding, allows us to see how a man can continue to believe in a woman, even after being robbed of his savings, when love is blind. Leslie was very good at deception. So, was her story really true, or was she trying to set herself up for a life of riches.
This is a fast read and one you should put on your TBR list.

(Book Review by Carole O'Neill)Whatever stories and teachings you’ve heard of Early Christianity, Magdalene's Journey by Renee Blodgett and Anthony Compagnone, a historical fiction, will make you wonder if there isn’t another truth. The authors introduce us to Angelo and Rochelle, an unsuspecting married couple who loved to explore ancient and esoteric wisdom across all cultures. Little did they know they would meet two ancient souls, who would turn their lives upside down. It all began one night when the words, “My name is Miriam of Magdala,” came out of the mouth of Angelo. His voice had changed, and Rochelle responded with, “Mary Magdalene!”
Magdalene’s Journey channels people who once lived and walked the planet, along with real settings in terms of time and place. This well-written narrative moves from one story to the next with accounts of the lives of Jesus of Nazareth and Mary Magdalene. It guides us through how she taught alongside Jesus, their marriage, and the water birth of their daughter Sarah.
It chronicles how the seven female apostles who travelled with Mary by sea to the north after the death and resurrection of Jesus. We learn how they dealt with finding food, clothing, and shelter, and their part in the water birth of Mary’s daughter.

Book Review: Beyond the Morning Light
Beyond the Morning Light by Daniel Robert Mazur is a contemporary fiction based on the author's life story. For those who want to know more, Daniel has written a memoir, COR Values.As a Christian, it is sometimes difficult to read works that dismiss God as a creator and loving father. However, I enjoy diving deep into things unknown, and Daniel does that in this book. He examines such things as self awareness, living authentically, family dynamics, emotional resilience, and personal growth.
I think that reading a book with a different mindset can be exactly what the doctor ordered. Though I disagree with some of his conclusions, the book caused me to think about who I am, what I believe, and why. Despite our differences, I agree with many of his ideas, especially the one stating that people tend to do what is easy and comfortable rather than what is right. We see this all the time in our world today.
If you want a book that will make you think, then this is the book for you.
