As for my current and future works, I've had a couple of busy months as I moved to Barcelona (and still will have a couple in the future). I'm working on my folk horror book, based on the Sardinian rites of Carnival, Dionysian cults and the rites of May, It's a concept that I love, but it's also very complicated to carry out. I'm properly waiting for inspiration to strike again and the spring season is approaching, and I can feel the inspiration coming back in 🌺

In the meantime, I'm working on a side project of one of my series that has never been published, which is The Alchemic School, with my favourite Alchemist as main character. I'm editing also Song Among The Ruins' Italian translation, Un canto fra le rovine, which I still don't know when it will be published, and working on a Spanish translation too, which I'm not thinking to publish actually...

I'm also beginning again the research concerning Storie di Sardegna's sequel, Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Regia, and brainstorming some very interesting book ideas that I have for the future ☺The ideas are there, it's the free time that is lacking...

Un canto fra le rovine è un gotico storico con due linee temporali: la prima, del 1668, basata sulla congiura Laconi-Camarassa nella Cagliari spagnola di fine Seicento; la seconda, ambientata a Cuglieri nel 1830, che segue le vicende di due ragazzi comuni che si ritrovano invischiati in vecchi fantasmi locali.

Sto lavorando anche ad una traduzione in spagnolo che, chissà, magari potrà essere pubblicata un giorno... Alla prima di molte future traduzioni! 🥂

This year I could write little. With the end of my PhD (finally) approaching, I have been overwhelmed with work. It was my intention to finish the first draft of my current work, code name MaimoneWiP, and make it ready for publication soon (👀), but I'm still working on it.

In the meantime, I finished the final revision for Un canto fra le rovine and gathering more book ideas. Among them, Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Regia, the long-awaited sequel to Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Giudicale. But you'll still have to wait for that 😄

Two things that will happen for sure in the upcoming month are: Un canto fra le rovine will release on January 5th; on February 3rd, we'll have the final event of the 700th anniversary of the siege of Villa di Chiesa, hosted by the Archive of Iglesias, with a public reading of an excerpt from Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Giudicale, among others. So, more news coming and more videos!

Today, When the Spring Comes is finally available to buy on Amazon, on paperback and ebook (DRM-free). It's been a long journey, but we made it.

When the Spring Comes is a folk horror set in 19th century Sardinia, with a bigger-than-life concept behind it. It's probably my currently grandest project (even if Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Giudicale comes very close). It all started more than 3 years ago, when I read a book about Sardinian Carnival rites and was inspired to write this story, intertwined between pre-Greek Dionysian rites and Sardinian pagan cults to the local god of water. In fact, Sardinians worshipped Maimone, a god of water and rain, and some of those rituals remained even today in Carnival traditions, like Sa Sartiglia of Oristano and neighbouring villages. Those same connotations were typical of the Micenean version of the god Dionysus, not just the god of wine and madness, but The God, a god of the atmospheric agents, of Life and Death. Even today, most of Sardinian Carnival rituals evoke old Dionysian rites. The book is set in Riola Sardo, a village near Oristano, and directly involves some of the rituals of the village.

Then, it took me 2 years to start and finish a draft. The concept and character building behind this book has been one of the most complicated I have ever come up with, which means it took its time to complete it. I have been procrastinating the drafting phase for so long, due to PhD work, moving to Spain for a few months, more PhD work and, most importantly, personal stuff that I needed to dive deep into in order to portray the characters and express the concepts fully. Because every time we procrastinate writing is because we are avoiding something in ourself or our mind that we don't consciously want to face.

When the Spring Comes is not an easy book. It hasn't been easy to write it, and it's not easy to read it. It's extremely metaphorical and has deep roots in Sardinian (or better, Mediterranean) folklore. I put so much of my own personal experience in creating Anna, the main character, and my own view of the world. She shares my same MBTI personality type, INFJ, which makes her often vague, mystic, out-of-the-world, detached and deep at the same time. When the Spring Comes is basically the crypted way to my mind, and my philosophical legacy.

The book does not feature any romance at all. So, if you're wishing to read some cute romantic plot line, this book is not it. To the contrary, Anna is written as an asexual and aromantic main character, even if she herself does not explicitly mention it in the book (she wouldn't have had the words or the means to know about asexuality/aromanticism at all). This book is very much queer, which is a good turn of events if you think about the over-sexualisation of the figure of Dionysus. The representation of the god itself has some peculiar queer characteristics that I'm not going to disclose now...

As tradition, here is the last blog post of the year, with some recap and some spoilers for the next year.

2024 has been the first year in which I published two books, the Italian translation of Song Among the Ruins, Un canto fra le rovine, on January 5th, and the new book When the Spring Comes, on July 26th. When the Spring Comes is an adult folk horror that took such a long time to be written, but was worth every moment. It's a book focused on pagan rituals and pantheistic religion, perfect for the upcoming Carnival season.



2024 has also been the year of the 700th anniversary of the siege of Iglesias, celebrated in February with a music-and-theatre event to which Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Giudicale also took part.

Currently, I'm actively working on three different projects, while many more are boiling in the background. Next year, I plan to publish the Italian translation of When the Spring Comes, by the name of Quando arriva la primavera. I'm currently drafting the sequel to Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Giudicale, by the name of Storie di Sardegna - Epoca Regia. The third project is a Sardinian retelling of Romeo and Juliet, currently in the plotting phase.

So, next year is going to look very Italian-focused. So here are two snippets from my ongoing projects:

«Bakis non le prestò attenzione. L’acqua si muoveva lentamente sotto di lui, impercettibile, movimenti ammalianti visibili solo a lui che lo chiamavano a buttarsi giù. Afferrò il parapetto in legno, inalando il profumo della foresta e facendolo sentire più coraggioso, più completo. Più vecchio.
“State indietro,” disse con una voce più roca e profonda della sua solita voce infantile. Una voce che echeggiava in una caverna inesistente e portava con sé la saggezza di eoni.
I bambini retrocedettero, spaventati, gli occhi fissi sulla schiena del loro amico o scambiandosi sguardi. Lui si volse.
“È già Primavera?” chiese, chiudendo gli occhi e focalizzandosi sul formicolii del suo corpo, sul leggero fruscio degli alberi, sull’acqua che scorre.
I bambini scambiarono uno sguardo. “Bakis? Siamo venuti qui perché è Maggio. Non ti ricordi?” chiese un bambino. “Cos’hai? Perché stai parlando con quella voce?”
Quando si voltò, si accorsero che la voce non era l’unica cosa che suonava strana. I suoi occhi blu avevano perso il colore e ora brillavano di una patina bianco latte. Comunque, egli mosse gli occhi, osservandoli tutti. Guardò agli alberi attorno a lui, scuotendo i loro rami, muovendosi lentamente con la brezza, incurvandosi sopra le loro teste e mostrando solo una parte del cielo azzurro da cui filtrava la luce e li illuminava.
“Volete prosperità, volete ricchezza, cibo, vita. Volete la pioggia. Portatemi le vostre offerte e io ascolterò. Siate l’offerta, e io verrò.”»

Quando arriva la primavera, (2025)

«Nella sala per la lettura, circondati da scaffali di carte e registri, trova la madre che legge una lettera ad Artal, Eleonora e Antonio. Benedetta siede ad un lato del lungo tavolo in legno, mentre i nipoti siedono, attenti, in fila sull’altro lato. Artal è il primo a notare il padre sulla porta ma Eleonora è la prima ad alzarsi e abbracciarlo. La ragazza, quasi in età da marito, è la più vanitosa della casa, con i capelli sempre raccolti alla perfezione in una retina dorata e perle, e indossando gli abiti pregiati di sua madre.
Benedetta solleva lo sguardo verso il figlio ma non rivela d’immediato l’argomento che li tiene tanto in tensione. Anche Artal lo osserva senza fare un minimo gesto, reclinato su una sedia dallo schienale alto come se fosse lui stesso l’erede al trono.
“Madre, che succede? Perché mi fissate tutti così?”
Benedetta gli allunga la lettera sul tavolo. “È arrivata una lettera da tuo fratello in Sardegna. Tuo zio Salvatore è morto, e per testamento ha lasciato che il marchesato di Oristany fosse tuo.”
Leonardo la fissa per un momento, poi allunga la mano e legge per conto suo. Sapeva che prima o poi sarebbe successo e già altre volte aveva pensato che cosa ne avrebbe fatto di quelle terre.
Ripiega la lettera e la infila dentro il farsetto, sorridendo a tutti i presenti. “Si dà il caso che dovremo trasferirci in Sardegna.”
Eleonora e Antonio si scambiano sguardi eccitati, ma Artal non sembra convinto e nemmeno Benedetta.
“Madre, non siete contenta che rivedrete la vostra terra? Mi avevate detto che vi sarebbe piaciuto.”
“Quand’ero più giovane. Ora il viaggio si fa più complicato, e qualcuno dovrà pur restare qui. Maria è troppo piccola per viaggiare, e anche Salvador.”
Leonardo annuisce, il suo entusiasmo un po’ scemato. “E tu, Artal? Anche tu vuoi restare qui?”
“Che ne sarà della mia carriera? Dovevo diventare anch’io camerlengo del re.”
Leonardo ride. “Sul serio? Credi davvero che sia piacevole controllare le coperte del re? Vieni con me e sarai un soldato, adesso, e un marchese in futuro. Non capisci la fortuna che ci è capitata?” Gli si avvicina, camminando lentamente e posando una mano sul tavolo davanti a lui. “Il marchesato di Oristany è l’unico feudo del suo genere in Sardegna. Il feudatario più importante del re, altro che camerlengo! Avremo terre, castelli, la terra dei tuoi antenati! Abbiamo lo sbocco sul mare, si può commerciare, puoi viaggiare quanto vuoi. Saremo accolti come re, mentre qui il re ci considera appena quando gli servono uomini per le sue guerre. Vieni con me, Artal. Vedrai che ti piacerà.”»
