Naturally there are many paths that seem to end, and when I can't find answers, my mind begins asking who, what, where, when, why, and how, which naturally leads me to stories. I am currently trying to bring a sort of closure to the horrible life of my great-grandmother through a novel titled Lady of Bethnal Green.(less)

This book was recommended to me. I have to say it wasn't what I expected. Despite the title, I was surprised to discover that half the story was set at the circus in the early 1930s. If I'd known that, I might not have read the book -- I'm not really ...more

I always thought that pirates were just crooks of the sea who were too lazy to get real jobs. But being a seafarer in the early 1700s wasn't for slackers -- even pirates had to work. There was a code of the sea, and it wasn't as though they could wal ...more

I read this book because I saw a movie was being/has been made of it and there were quite a few big stars in the cast. If Helen Mirren is the lead, the movie likely has merit, and I never watch a movie based on a book unless I've read the book first. ...more

This book -- in fact the series -- was recommended to me by a well-read friend, so perhaps I was expecting too much. I liked the setting, I liked the premise, and I'm a big fan of mysteries, so it should have been right up my alley. In truth, I can't ...more

“True Wit is Nature to advantage dress'd
What oft was thought, but ne'er so well express'd;
Something whose truth convinced at sight we find,
That gives us back the image of our mind.
As shades more sweetly recommend the light,
So modest plainness sets off sprightly wit.”
