Fake News Resources

Are you looking for resources to teach kids about critical thinking and fake news? TeachingKidsNews.com by Joyce Grant has an extensive list of great resources you can use for free! For instance, BBC iReporter is a fast-paced online game that teaches kids how reporters must decide whether to post information or keep checking it for accuracy. It’s fun and real-world. Another great game you’ll find in our list of fake news resources is Spot the Troll which teaches kids how to know whether it’s a person or a bot following you. You’ll also find a list of scholastic papers, research and more to help teachers and parents prepare their kids for the online world and to help make them better critical thinkers.

A fantastic resource for teachers

Joyce Grant keeps the information short and sweet. Since it is non-fiction keeping the information concise ensures readers will read the book through to the end. It’s a fantastic resource for teachers, especially those teaching media literacy, to have child friendly information at their fingertips.

The illustrations by Kathleen Marcotte are fun and eye catching, filling the pages and holding the readers interest in the topic of news.

At the End of the Day Podcast

How to help kids (& adults) spot fake news with Joyce Grant; host Hannah Sung

Season 1, Ep. 4

When it comes to bots, trolls, and conspiracy theories, I have many questions. So many, it’s hard to know where to start. And if I don’t understand what’s been designed to trick me, how will I break it down for my kids?

Luckily, I stumbled upon a book called, Can You Believe it? How to spot fake news and find the facts, by journalist and author Joyce Grant. In this episode, we talk about how to teach kids to navigate online misinformation while they are learning to process the world around them. What I’m learning from Joyce is that the lessons we need to give our kids are actually good for all of us.
