Can You Believe It? (CanLit for Little Canadians, Helen Kubiw)
Helen Kubiw is a wonderful reviewer and I’m very proud about this glowing review of Can You Believe It? She had lots of nice things to say–I made the graphic below about Kathleen Marcotte’s illustrations because I think sometimes they don’t get enough credit. They really are incredible and they add SO MUCH to this book! Also, what Helen says about them is bang-on.

Book Time blog interviews Joyce Grant

“And lastly, if you’re a kid and you’re reading this book and TKN and you feel that spark of curiosity, a sense of excitement around the news and social media and you want to tell others about it… I want to welcome you to the field of journalism. Because kid, you’re probably a journalist. And I can’t wait to see what you do!”
I sat down with the good folks at Book Time in a wide-ranging interview about media literacy, my newest book (Can You Believe It?) and how to teach kids about news–and about fake news.
Thank you to Book Time for this fascinating set of in-depth questions that delve into the process of creating a non-fiction work as well as the importance of critical thinking.
Here’s the interview:

Can You Believe It? (Jenkintown Library)
An awesome book about information literacy
When I was a kid, I dreaded the words “non-fiction.” Non-fiction had no dragons, pirates, fairies, magic, or other things that made books COOL.
I had not read a book like THIS one, which may have changed my mind.
It’s never too soon for all of us to learn how to spot fake news, why it exists, and how it compares to the real deal.

CYBI on OpenBook.ca

I love Open Book so much–they “celebrate and profile Ontario’s non-stop literary scene.” That’s from their About page, but I couldn’t have said it better myself.
They’re smart and they know what they’re talking about.
I am thrilled and honoured to have been asked to talk about my new book, Can You Believe It? I also talked about bunnies (it’s relevant to the book, trust me). And I shed some light on a new book I’m working on. Ssssh!
Here’s the interview:

Can You Believe It? (Youth Services Book Review, Massachusetts)
5/5 Starred Review
Should we (librarians/readers) put this on the top of our “to read” piles? Yes
This is an excellent introduction to media literacy for young readers who are bombarded with information daily.
Starting with a challenge to spot the fake headline among a choice of four headlines, Can You Believe It asks readers to do more than simply take a news story at face value. The author walks the reader, step by step, through the process of critically examining news stories and their sources.
Readers are encouraged to assess stories for their biases as well as their truthfulness. Introducing concepts like points of view, bias, click-bait, propaganda, and fact-checkers, young readers are given the tools to critically view the stories they see.

Thanks for coming to the launch of CYBI?!

Thank you to everyone who attended the launch of Can You Believe It? We had a great time at A Different Drummer Books in Burlington, Ontario on Saturday, June 25. We ate “fake pops” (cake pops with fun, fake flavour names). And we played “Post or Pass?” — I read out a funny headline and everyone guessed whether it was fake or real. Along the way, we learned some tips for figuring out if something’s fake or not.
Thank you to the gang at Different Drummer, the dream team at Kids Can Press, my high school buddies (!), author friends, tennis pals and of course the parents and teachers and kids who came to help me celebrate and launch Can You Believe It?! THANK YOU! I’m so grateful for the community of booklovers and book creators of which I’m so fortunate enough to be part. Thank you!
