When I was little, I thought my curtains were HAUNTED…

When I was little (perhaps five or six years old) I remember lying in bed in the dark (which I was VERY afraid of) and staring at my curtains. The pattern on my curtains in daylight was gingham, which was certainly NOT what I was seeing that night.

What I saw were two children—a boy and a girl, who I suspect were Jack and Jill (yes, from the nursery rhyme), as they were climbing up the curtain with a bucket. With every two steps forward they would tumble two steps back. I remember watching th...

Finding Inspiration In A Dark Time—Literally

When I was little (perhaps five or six years old) I remember lying in bed in the dark (which I was VERY afraid of) and staring at my curtains. The pattern on my curtains in daylight was gingham, which was certainly NOT what I was seeing that night.

What I saw were two children—a boy and a girl, who I suspect were Jack and Jill (yes, from the nursery rhyme), as they were climbing up the curtain with a bucket. With every two steps forward they would tumble two steps back. I remember watching th...

NEW RELEASE! In The Beginning There Was Us.

In some SUPER EXCITING NEWS, my next young adult book has just been released – IN THE BEGINNING THERE WAS US. I thought I would do a quick Q&A on it…

Is this a sequel to WHEN THE WORLD WAS FLAT (AND WE WERE IN LOVE)?
No. It is, however, a companion novel. Both novels are part of THE OTHER WORLD COLLECTION—a series of young adult novels with re-imagined histories. As the novels are based on the concepts explored in WHEN THE WORLD WAS FLAT (AND WE WERE IN LOVE) (no spoilers!), they share a numb...

In The Beginning There Was Us

What would you do if you were God? If you had the power to not only give life, but take it away in the blink of an eye? These are the questions that plague fifteen-year-old Abbey Baxter after she resurrects a boy, long lost to the ages.

The achingly beautiful and eternally melancholy Cole not only serves as a welcome distraction from her long-time crush, Elwin, but also eases the heartache that persists since the sudden passing of her younger brother, Junior, four years earlier.

As the intrig...

New Edition of WHEN THE WORLD WAS FLAT!

I’ve always been a draw-inside-the-lines kind of girl. Typically, breaking the rules has never ended well for me. Like the time a friend convinced me to lie to her mum so that she would drive me home from school when I was in year two. We claimed I’d missed my bus. I thought my older brother would arrive home shortly after me on the aforementioned bus, but he was five minutes late, then ten minutes, then fifteen… then a full hour passed with no word. It turned out he’d noticed I wasn’t on the...

We Are All Love

Last Monday morning many of us grabbed a cup of coffee or a hot chocolate (in my case) on the way to work without a second thought. As did sixteen mothers, grandfathers, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons in Sydney who found themselves caught up in the clutches of a madman in the Lindt Cafe. A couple of days later a mother killed seven of her children and a niece all under the age of fifteen in Cairns. Meanwhile, around the world similar tragedies are taking place—including the massacre of 14...

The Real Mockingjay

I watched Mockingjay recently. And LOVED it, of course. Could this be one of those rare examples of a movie series being better than the book series (as in, the books are awesome, but the movies are OUT OF THIS WORLD!)?

Anyhow, I got all inspired by Katniss Everdeen and it got me thinking about other powerful female characters. Like Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Ellie Linton from Tomorrow when the War Began. Tally Youngblood from Uglies. And Jo from Little Women (hey – there’s no rule sa...
