Fart Tuesday

Huh? Fart Tuesday? What's that about? Well, there's the Mardis Gras pun, of course. But that alone doesn't justify the reference. However, this coming Tuesday is September 21st, the release (heh, heh) date for Jon Szzckssa's anthology, Guy's Read: Funny Business. So I'm officially declaring tomorrow to be Fart Tuesday (or Mardi Gas, if you prefer), since, like it or not, farts are funny. (Unless they result in 3rd degree burns, in which case, they're merely amusing.)

sundry Sunday

Home-made pastrami report -- it was tasty but not amazing. I might take one more shot at it, modifying some of the steps.

Jesus wept dept. -- look at the idiot who is slamming Speak. Go to the source for for a good account from Laurie Halse Anderson.

What did I read at the beack last week? I figured I'd bring a book with "Sun" in the title. David M. Gill won out over Hemmingway or Hansberry.

The lonely only

Okay, smarties. Lend me your ears. Anyone have a problem with the placement of "only" in the following sentence, or does it sound just fine to you?

"It had only taken me five minutes to reach the forest."

I know that strict grammarians hold that "only" must be adjacent to the word or phrase it modifies (in this example, "five minutes"), but in contemporary prose the strict version sounds strange to me. I'm free use either version, but I'm concerned that the preference for the incorrect place...
