A Morning Routine Will Cultivate a Mindset Full of Gratitude

A recently read an article in Forbes, and it's great for reading more about the #powerofpositivity and mindfulness. The author believes a morning routine will cultivate a mindset full of #gratitude. Similar to my OMG™ method, she recommends:

OMG™ and Writing My Book

It’s one thing to talk about the OMG™ (Outside-in Thinking, Mindfulness, and Gratitude), but it’s another thing to put it into practice when you’re attempting something outside your comfort zone. ⠀

I learned how challenging praxis can be when I began work on my book Butter Side Up! Because I had never written a book, I wasn’t sure where to start. I’d never attempted something this vast before, and I found myself getting caught up in “the how” of it, rather than the big picture, which really mattered.⠀

What was the solution? I took a deep breath and remembered how to approach situations of uncertainty.

I looked at goals from the outside in, nonjudgmental and compassionate. I was honest with where I was and how I felt, and this acceptance gave me the mental clarity to take the first step. I let myself focus on what I loved: “I get to write a book about what’s important to me!” ⠀

These small OMG™ strategies made a BIG difference, and despite tremendous challenges, I wrote and published my first book! A healthy mindset doesn’t just help you overcome challenges. It helps you realize that there is no challenge at all.⠀

Your Mind Is Your Garden and Your Thoughts Are Your Seeds

Globally, we are in the process of springing forward. We are setting our clocks ahead around the planet to soak up as much daylight as possible after a tough winter. As well as enjoying more sunshine, this reset provides a great opportunity to set intentions that enable us to clear out the cobwebs, be more optimistic, and live our best life.

With COVID still at our heels, mastering the art of positive thinking when we don’t know what the next five minutes might bring can be challenging. We are all naturally waiting for the other shoe to drop like everyone else.

While it is not realistic to expect you can be positive all the time, more optimistic thinking does give us an extreme advantage during times of extreme stress.

When our state of mind is more positive, we are better able to handle everyday stress in a more constructive way. A more positive outlook helps us respond to the ups and downs of life, rather than react to them. This supports us to move forward, not backward, while change plays out.

The good news is that we can learn to turn negative thinking into more positive thinking but it does take time and practice. The first step towards a more optimistic outlook is acceptance. This does not mean you have to be happy about a situation, (like a pandemic) and how it has disrupted your life.

Rather, it means to move forward, not backward, one has to try and accept change has occurred, not resist or deny it. Regardless of the magnitude of the event, acceptance helps us reduce the emotionality of the situation (fear, anxiety, sadness), and encourages our minds to shift to the more positive end of the spectrum. When this happens we become more flexible and open to change. We also become better equipped to find solutions and look ahead towards fresh starts.

With spring here, our thoughts turn to clearing out the clutter. Now is a great time to consider creating space in your mind, and your life, for new things.

You are valuable and strong!

When the COVID-19 pandemic started ramping up in early 2020, few of us knew what we were in for. The experts suggested we temper our expectations to account for the long haul, but I think, deep down, many—including myself—were hoping for a few months at worst. ⠀

Fast-forward to a year later, and each of us has had to learn how to navigate our mental health through trying circumstances. We should all give ourselves a tremendous pat on the back for that as well as reflect on mindfulness habits that have helped us weather a very unforeseen circumstance.⠀

What have I learned over the course of the pandemic? During difficult times, it’s more important than ever to cultivate being good to yourself. And you do this by paying attention to the little things.⠀

• Focus on your basic needs: Eat healthy foods, and rest more than you think you need to. Show yourself grace and tenderness. ⠀

• Look at the scenario from the outside in: when you take a step back and separate yourself from your circumstances, you can gain the clarity you need to make good decisions.⠀

• Stay connected: spend proactive time with your loved ones, even if it’s a phone call or Zoom meeting. Staying in touch with people who support you is essential to maintaining a healthy mind.⠀

Remember, most of all, that you are valuable and strong and you have the tools to rise above your circumstances.⠀

Happiness Is An Inside Job

I love this little guy–he always makes me smile! ⠀

I also love children because they have an unlimited capability to visualize and believe. Until someone plants a seed in a child’s head and tells them they cannot do something, naturally, they think they can do anything. ⠀

Most people fail to grasp that to be effective at visualization, just picturing what you want to happen in your life is not enough. You need to have faith and truly believe what you want to happen actually can happen. ⠀

When this occurs, your brain’s natural problem-solving processes go to work to help you develop a plan to obtain what you want successfully. In other words, happiness is an inside job.

Random Acts of Kindness Week

Starting 2021 off on a different foot can feel like a massive feat when the world still seems upside down, not right side up. For me, putting the best way to put my best foot forward begins with kindness.

February 14-20 is Random Acts of Kindness week. To celebrate, PARADE shared 65 ways to celebrate kindness, and one of my personal favorites from their list is #26: Email a thank you to someone who’s made a difference in your life.

Thanks to my readers and followers for your support and encouragement- you are making a difference in my life!

A special shout-out to Jessica Sager and PARADE for the invitation to contribute a few of my own ideas to the list. I’d love to hear some of your favourite ideas to put kindness into practice this year!

Click the link in my bio and share your picks in the comments.

Reframing Change

As we look forward to 2021, consider reframing your view about change.

Change can be distressing because it involves fear of the unknown-the status quo is comfortable, even if it isn’t ideal. That’s why we tend to resist change while clinging to the familiar. The familiar might not be perfect, but change could lead to a negative outcome (key word: could).

On the other hand, looking at change as opportunity propels us forward with purpose. Change is when you lose your job. Progress is when you get the chance to pursue a career more in line with your interests!

Mastering the Art of Positive Thinking

When disaster strikes-like a loss, illness, or personal injury-maintaining a positive mindset with faith and hope becomes more important than ever before. Just like we put those cases of water and weeks-worth of groceries in the pantry, having a positive mindset is emergency preparedness for our minds during uncertain times.

Mastering the art of positive thinking can be challenging. Positive thinking gives us an extreme advantage during times of extreme stress; yet most people do not use this strategy to their advantage.

Mindfulness supports any journey to successfully navigate change because staying in the present reduces anxiety about the future, and depression about the past. This helps us calm our thinking and be better prepared to handle unexpected change as it arises.
