added a status update: Today I’ll be speaking with librarians about Evil Genius. I think I’ll tell them about The Crab Queen. She is the 3rd monstrously strong supernatural female guardian I’ve created to guide the protagonists in my novels. In Chouette it was “The Owl Lover.” In Poor Deer it was “Poor Deer.” The Crab Queen is my favorite monster-guardian of all though. Fearless. All powerful. Metes out justice without mercy. I love her.

added a status update: What a joy to meet Jeff Vandermeer and to hear him speak about Area X! What a generous soul! I was bowled over by the attentiveness of Jeff's answers to the audience ?'s. Each of his answers was so thoughtful, and so personal. His is a great listener, and a great observer, and these qualities shine out in real life as much as they do in his novels. I can't recommend the his work enough, for a first read or a re-read!

It's July 6 2025 and the first review copies of Evil Genius will be out in 10 days and the story will no longer belong to me. I'm spending a quiet time today, thinking about why I wrote this novel the way I did. You could say Evil Genius was written ...more |

I re-read this novel in preparation for writing a scene in my novel Poor Deer, one that involves a car, plus some intense emotions. I don't know a lot of writers personally but the ones I do know seem to write very differently from the way I write. T ...more |

“I prefer to speak in metaphor: That way, no logic can trap me, and no rule can bind me, and no fact can limit me or decide for me what’s possible.”

“I begin to understand what a gift I've been given, to have been chosen for this task. The truth overwhelms me, and humbles me. The birds are telling me that my life's work, as your mother, will be to teach you how to be yourself- and to honor however much of the wild world you have in you, owl-baby- rather than mold you to be what I want you to be, or what your father wants you to be.”
