“Yes.” She drank the cool water, each swallow bringing her more clarity. Soon the bottle was drained and dangled empty in her grasp.

Midtown Miami’s hottest venue, The Stage, was packed as usual on Friday nights. A local band played reggae music while everyone jammed and swayed to the beat. Jeremy and Ethan sat at the bar with chilled shots of Patron. Fortunately, they had a great view of the band. The eclectic, but small, bar had minimal seating capacity. Those who arrived late sat outside.
“Hey, Jer, you’re being watched.”
Jeremy Taylor turned his head to look, only to be stopped by Ethan’s strong grip on his forearm.
His lover grinned. “Don’t look. You’re too obvious.”
Jeremy sipped his drink, savoring the smooth liquid sliding down his throat. “How do you expect me to check out the goods if I can’t even look?”
Huddled beneath the mood lights, they didn’t need to yell over the band’s pumping music. Jeremy imagined how they looked–two tall, muscled guys in leather jackets, close enough to kiss, and whispering as if sharing the world’s secrets.
The thought made him smile. Or maybe the alcohol had loosened him up. He was already on his third shot of Patron.
“I’ll tell you,” Ethan said. His gray eyes gleamed with mischief. “Tall, dark, and sexy. Long hair. Ethnic.”
Jeremy frowned. “You sound like you’re reading from a menu.”
“I want him on my menu.”
Ignoring Ethan, Jeremy turned to look. Across the room, on a plush, tan couch next to graffiti art paintings, sat the poster man for his wet dreams.
Just like Ethan described: long, black hair cascaded past the newcomer’s shoulders, brushing smooth dark tanned skin. The man’s muscles rippled beneath tight, denim jeans, and a muscle shirt. The way he sat, with his legs spread casually, showed off an impressive bulge. Jeremy’s dick twitched as heat flooded his groin.
“You can pick your jaw up off the floor, lover.” Ethan’s mocking voice snapped him back to reality. “I take it you like?”
Hell, yes.
“Why did I let you talk me into this again?” Despite the stranger’s oozing attraction, Jeremy wasn’t too gung-ho about this three-way idea.
In his mind, cheating was cheating. Even if his lover happened to be on the other side of the bed.
Jeremy had reluctantly agreed because he lived to please Ethan. And Ethan always got his way.
Ethan downed another shot. “You’re indulging me. You know a ménage is my ultimate fantasy, and you’re the conduit to making it a reality.”
“I’m definitely indulging you,” Jeremy said.
Ethan stood before him, close enough Jeremy could taste the sweetness of his alcohol-laced breath. “Jer, you know I won’t do this if you’re not up for it. And it’s okay. I completely, absolutely, one-hundred and ten percent understand why you wouldn’t be.”
Yeah, right. The moment he refused to fulfill Ethan’s fantasy, he’d make Jeremy regret it.
“Fuck it.” Jeremy finished his shot in one gulp.
Ethan grinned. “Yes, let’s. Though I think ‘him’ would fit better at the end of that sentence.”
The band switched to another song, a reggaeton number that got the crowd on their feet dancing. Ethan glided through them, his body fluid while moving along to the music. Jeremy followed, still uneasy about this whole thing. He’d never picked up a random guy from a bar when he was single.
Doing it now with his monogamous lover of five years was awkward as shit.
Once they came to a stop at the sectioned-off couches, Jeremy’s resolve weakened.
“Mind if we sit here? Bar’s kinda full,” Ethan said.
The guy chuckled, staring up at them with dark, hooded eyes. He was exotic with chiseled features and a killer smile. Jeremy wanted to feel those teeth in his skin, hard enough to leave imprints.
“Please, sit,” he said with a Spanish accent. Jeremy swallowed hard. Ever since he’d studied abroad in Europe, he’d grown a thing for accents.
“I think we will. Won’t we, Jeremy?”
Jeremy hesitated. He locked his baby blues on the pair of dark eyes looking back at him. Jeremy wanted him. And he wasn’t comfortable with that.

What can I say? Writing has been an integral part of my life. I can recall writing stories when I was 8 years of age. It was my escape. I was also an avid reader. By the age of 9 I had read all the library books designated for the grade 4 and grade 5 students. Strange considering English was not my first language (we spoke Russian at home) and I was a first generation Australian kid on both sides of the family.
Over the years I have achieved many qualifications including teaching (opted out of that career), journalism, film making, interpreter (Russian), and currently law. One thing university teaches you is how to locate information (pre computer days this was a great thing) and sift out the important facts.
I never lost my love of writing and wrote shorts that won me prizes in national competitions. I was a top student in English at school but never touched history as a subject. I did not and do not like politics. However once I had access to social history I fell in love with the medieval era. There is so much fiction that can be interwoven between the facts and real people of history! The futuristic aspect of what might be in science fiction drew me like a magnet. I pre empted the popularity of supernatural fiction too with my love for that genre. What I write now reflects my interests in these areas.
The one bonus of technology is that today I can trawl the internet and find the faces to inspire my descriptions of my characters that I manipulate to be believable. I have read widely including most of the classics (oh English compulsory reading has a lot to answer for). With the rise of epub self publilshed authors I am always on the lookout for well written stories to relax with (but a harsh critic if I come across an historical error!). Enjoy reading for that is where your heart is.
Did I forget to mention I love cats but have discovered reptiles make intriguing pets!

EXCERPT – Demon’s Ink
DRAKE
Expectations can ruin everything. Like thinking my senior year was going to be something special. What a set up that was.
I should have known better than to get my hopes up.
Ever.
I’d never been lucky. No one in my family was. I was probably only six when I’d heard grandpa say, “We come from a long line of losers.” He was talking to my Dad. I don’t even know about what. But, now, I know I should have listened to him.
Dad had already gone to prison, leaving Mom and me worse off than ever. And we were never good but, at least while he’d hung around, she managed to act like things were okay. Now she wasn’t even trying to pretend. Really it was way worse than that; she wasn’t even getting up off the couch any more.
I’d come home from school to find her passed out. The first couple times it freaked me out. Seeing her face-planted in the front room and not knowing whether she was alive or dead, I didn’t want to be the one to find her like that, to turn her over, to have to check to see if she was still breathing but I did. . . and I had no idea if she was high or drunk. I didn’t even care because what difference did it make? She was out of it. That was all that mattered.
So, after Dad went to jail, I was completely alone until Bartos made me a deal I couldn’t refuse but that was later.
For weeks, I’d come home after class and make a sandwich—if there was bread—otherwise it was a bowl of cereal for breakfast and dinner, sometimes I’d eat it dry because the milk had gone bad.
I knew I was going to have to get a job if I wanted to survive and I’d started looking around but that was right before everything changed.
It was late one Thursday evening. I still remember because I was thinking, “Only one more day…” I just didn’t know how right I was.
I don’t know what woke me up that night. Maybe it was the smell, the heat, the sound of my Mom screaming. I really don’t know. But I opened my eyes to the thick burning haze of a room filled with smoke.
I’d gone down into the basement that night and fallen asleep.
Looking around, I already knew there were no windows. I was trapped.

I’m a writer who grew up in an old Victorian house on Mt. Tabor in a family with 9 kids and only 1 t.v. so I spent my days reading and, later, writing. I love books. . .maybe because I never got to pick the t.v. shows we watched. I’d run home after school to catch the last fifteen minutes of Dark Shadows…every day.
I still love to run…or maybe I should say wogging (a cross between walking and jogging). Here in Portland, I love Halloween themed runs – where people don costumes and run. It’s a lot of fun…and I know those two words don’t always go together: fun…and…run. But it is.
And, with all those Halloween themed runs, I guess Dark Shadows had more of an influence than some people might think. Even today my favorite author is Stephen King. My all-time favorite book is Salem’s Lot.
Favorite romance novels are The Hunger Games…okay, I know, it’s a survival book but it’s really all about romance. Then there are the series: Twilight, True Blood, Dead Until Dark and more. I really love paranormal, horror and sometimes even light-read books like Dewey the Small Town Library Cat… Mainly, I just love to read. . . and write.
I’ve had dozens of articles published in a variety of magazines like Herb Quarterly, Hopscotch, Guide, Romantic Homes, Writer’s Journal, Birds & Blooms and more. Plus, I just signed a contract with CleanReads to publish another young adult novel set in Oregon near the coast, in Mist and Jewel: The Cats of Cullaby Creek. I’ve also had stories published in anthologies like Holiday Spice and the Sabbath Action Blast, by Guide. Spotlight: Lola Karns and Lucky Traveler
Today I am welcoming another Decadent Publishing author, Lola Karns, to my blog. She is promoting her newest release with the 1 Night Stand Series, LUCKY TRAVELER. Plus she has a contest, so be sure to read all the way to the end of the post.
Inspiration:
I wrote my 2014 Decadent release BAD TRAVELER as a stand-alone title, but the characters weren’t done with me. Several readers asked me about Keira Jones and Logan Collins. I tried to wrestle them into a novel, but Keira refused to participate. Logan kept pestering me. I discarded plot after plot until he tapped me on the shoulder and said “You know I’m a recovering alcoholic, right?” I understood that he needed a chance to make amends.
Only Madame Eve and Decadent’s 1Night Stand series offered a way to bring these two characters together. I hope you will enjoy their journey.

Logan couldn’t do this sitting down. Not after all his failed efforts to reach out to her. A sigh escaped. The coin in his pocket was bigger than that old one-dollar coin his grandma gave him and about the size of a poker chip before the machines all switched to swipe cards. He wrapped his fingers around it. Why purple, he didn’t know. The next was worse. Pink, but he wanted it anyway. The coin brought power held in his palm. He squeezed it almost as tight as his eyelids.
“I’ve been sober one hundred and thirty-one days.”
“So?” Her nonchalance annoyed him.
“I don’t drink anymore.”
She sighed. He paced. This is your chance to move her from the hopeless step nine to eight. A slip of paper in his wallet listed everyone he could think of to whom he needed to make amends. Keira’s name reigned at the top of the list. He looked at her, an angel in blue curled up on the couch. The skirt of her dress slid over her legs. A line of lace midway up her thigh caught Lucky’s attention. For the first time in almost eleven months, the big guy straightened up for a better view. The upper brain clicked in enough to restrain him from doing a fist pump, but his hand twitched anyway.
“Ahem.” She cleared her throat.
“Right.” He had a job to do. Business before pleasure as the saying goes. The apology. “Are you wearing a garter belt?”
After a glance at her legs, she tugged a fold of fabric over the delicious spot. Her squint approximated anger. With those wide, round eyes, she never looked truly pissed off. Except at the wedding and in his recurring nightmare.
“Is it the one I bought?”
“No. That one had bad memories. I threw it out.”
Would she throw him to the trash heap, too?
“Did you wear it to the wedding?”
“You asked me to.” Her voice chilled him.
The warm coin palmed in his fist reminded him of renewed opportunity.
“We can’t move forward until we move back. I made a fool of you. My weakness in the face of alcohol led me to certain inappropriate behaviors that hurt me—”
“Cut the shit. You had your hand up the wrong bridesmaid’s dress.”

Niko sighed in frustration. He stared at his mirrored reflection in the bathroom in disgust. He’d overcome so much. Fought his way out of poverty and ignorance. He’d worked and read and done everything he could think of to improve himself, his own lot in life and that of others like him. Yet the smallest things, like tying a stupid bow tie, set him back, reminding him he hadn’t come as far as he liked to think.
He stood in the bathroom and untied the clumsy bow he’d made for perhaps the tenth time. Propped on the small vanity was a library book that offered step-by-step instructions on how to properly tie the perfect bow. He’d come close a couple of times, but his subsequent attempts to get it just right had unraveled. He was ready to give up. He’d have to tell Lesley to forget this whole idea. Somehow he’d have to come up with the money to pay her for the suit. He could only imagine how many off-duty traffic control and security jobs he’d have to work to do that.
He heard Lesley’s knock just as he tied the tie into a clumsy knot once again. “I still don’t see what’s wrong with a clip-on,” he grumbled. He doubted anyone would even notice. Or care. Except Lesley. He padded down the hall in his stockinged feet and opened the door.
Lesley in a soft-looking, emerald-green, floor-length gown with a plunging neckline stopped him in his tracks. She looked smooth and sleek, blond and beautiful. Her hair was down, coaxed into soft waves that made him think of one of those glam actresses from the forties and fifties. Betty Grable, maybe, or Rita Hayworth. Her jewelry was minimal. A teardrop-shaped stone hung from a delicate chain and glittered above the vee of her cleavage. Probably a diamond worth about six times what he made in a year.
“Hello there,” she said, barely hiding the chuckle beneath her greeting as her gaze zeroed in on his tie.
“Hi,” he said glumly as he stepped back to let her in.
He closed the door and they stood facing each other. “Problems?” she queried, but he could see an amused smile glimmering at the corners of her mouth. He was a fool to think he could move in her circle, that her plan to help him fund-raise would ever work. He’d be humiliated. A laughingstock. In fact he already was.
He yanked the tie off. “This isn’t going to work.” He held the tie out to her and she took it. “Let’s forget it.”
He started back to the bedroom, ready to strip himself out of the suit. At the moment he wanted to throw the entire thing back at her. Jacket, pants, shirt. The ridiculous onyx studs and matching cuff links. He didn’t feel elegant at all. He felt clumsy and out of his depth and he didn’t like it one bit.
“Such impatience. Remember, we have a deal,” Lesley reminded him. He could hear the
tap of her high heels as she followed him.
He whirled on her. “It’s black-tie only, isn’t it, this event?” He yanked the tie away from her and waved it in front of her. “It’s going to be a problem if I can’t figure out how to put the damn thing on.”
She bit her lip. He was 100 percent sure she was trying not to laugh.
“It doesn’t help to have you laughing at me.” Even he could hear the sulky tone in his voice.
“I’m not laughing at you,” she assured him, though her eyes were dancing. “I’m laughing with you.”
Niko frowned. There was no malice in her smile. Perhaps she found the situation amusing, but not at his expense. Plus, every time she smiled for real, something inside him responded to it.
“Give me this,” she said, reaching for the tie. He let it go.
She reached up, and he bowed his head so she could slip it around his neck. “This isn’t going to work,” she said.
“Told you so.”
Ignoring him, she glanced around. “You’ll have to sit down.”
He took a seat on a stool at the kitchen counter while Lesley concentrated on his tie. She leaned forward, which offered him an even better view of her cleavage. He sat absolutely still while she worked, mesmerized by the sway of the teardrop necklace and the thought of what lay beneath the drape of the fabric. He dug his fingers into his thighs to fight the itch to cup her breasts in his hands, to see if they were as soft and as real as they appeared to be.
The subtle scent of her perfume invaded his senses, fogging his brain and sending all kinds of lustful signals to the rest of his body. He used a trick he’d used often before. Mentally reciting bits of poetry he’d read, the times tables, the steps of cleaning his service revolver—anything unsexy he could think of so he wouldn’t throw caution to the wind and act on his natural impulses.
“There.” Lesley straightened and stepped back. Niko let go of a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He reached up to feel what she’d done.
“Really?” He was hardly able to believe she’d accomplished in two minutes what he’d been struggling with for half an hour. “We’re good?”
“We’re good,” she echoed without a trace of amusement.
“You’ll have to teach me how to do that.”
“I will.”

I tap a quick rap before stepping back from the car. “Come on.”

“Huh, good question.” I step forward, but when in the doorway, I spin to hold the door open for him. “I have no idea.”
“No?” With a raised brow, he passes me.

“Oh!” He laughs.
As the door pushes into my back, squeezing me tighter against him, I put my hands on his waist. First above his clothes––the thick leather jacket and his shirt––then sneaking underneath both of them, my fingers splaying on his warm skin and stroking him.
Completely stuck, he tilts his head and stares into my eyes, his own sparkling with playfulness. “What are you up to?”
