Made It Through The Heat Dome

The heat melted our brains over here in Seattle during late June but I have good news to report:

I am still alive AND I was able to get edits to my publisher for my next book!

This collection of my short stories entitled Home Is A Made-Up Place won the Hidden River Arts 2020 Eludia Award and I am thrilled to be readying it for spring 2022 publication with Sowilo Press. I even got away to a café to check it over with a tall cold brew and potato chips chaser. Snacks + time to write = Heaven.

I’ll be posting updates about this collection soon and story previews too. So excited to share this with you!

Room For All Of Us

I was visiting with family and off social media for a day or two when I opened my page and saw that Margo Fowkes of Find Your Harbor had posted a quote of mine that she appreciated.

Thank you, Margo for sharing this!

When I first made the switch from fiction to memoir writing I was unsure anybody would want to or need to read the story of my mother leaving to follow a guru, my family’s end, and how I got through my childhood. I knew my story was a bit different but felt others had it far worse or had more important things to say.

But I learned that there was room for my words in the world. And if I didn’t write my story somebody else would or, more likely, nobody would.

I’m grateful I listened and followed this path, that my memoir When She Comes Back is out in the world, and that I have come to embrace the power of our personal stories.

If you are just getting started thinking about or writing yours, I am over here cheering you on! The world has room for yours, the world wants to hear yours.

I hope you’re well. It’s been a busy few weeks, and I’m so happy to be able to write to you again.

It was a great surprise to see that my new memoir, When She Comes Back, has made the Book Riot List of Best True Crime books of 2021! It might seem strange that my book is on this list, but I can thank the late guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh and his sidekick Ma Anand Sheela for this distinction since they make up part of my story and my family’s history.

Quick facts about Rajneeshpuram, the ashram Bhagwan established on the Big Muddy Ranch in Antelope, OR: His inner circle was responsible for the most significant bioterror attack on US soil.His inner circle was trying to isolate and potentially weaponize the AIDS virus.His sannyasins or followers sanctioned sexual relations between adults and minors on the ranch.

I cover a lot of this and more in When She Comes Back and how this infamous guru, later named Osho, profoundly affected my childhood.

One Of My Latest Guest Appearances

Whenever people used to hear my family’s story, they expressed surprise that I still had a relationship with my mother. They could understand, they’d sometimes say, how I might never want to speak with her again, they’d ask how I reconciled with her. I wrote a new piece about it which Kveller has just published. It’s not always easy to look at your own behavior and interrogate it; to be honest with oneself and see how imperfect we are. But this was an important piece of my healing puzzle.

My memoir When She Comes Back officially became a book in the world on Tuesday, and I’m so thrilled to see it is at the time of this writing #1 New Release in Kindle Biographies of Hoaxes and Deceptions. It’s a category I didn’t know about, but I’ll take it!

I have been overwhelmed and moved by the support for my debut book; friends, family and writing pals have been so encouraging and generous. Releasing a book is a lot like planning a wedding or getting ready to have a child—you plan and plan, organize, schedule, imagine, time drags on and then BOOM, the day arrives and you can hardly wrap your head around it.

If you’ve read or are reading my book, thank you so much! After so many years of writing and editing and revising, it’s an amazing thing to know it’s in your hands.

Today, Friday, May 14th, at 7 PM PST, I’ll be a guest on Story Smash, the storytelling game show. Several expert judges will listen to me, and three other contestants vie for first place in a storytelling contest where all we have is a subject suggestion and 1- and 2-minute impromptu storytelling time!
