I hope February is treating you well so far. This month I’m thinking about all the ways it feels good to take up space in the world: To accept our size
Our bodies
Where we come from
What makes us happy
How we choose to live
To honor what we have lost
What we need
What we dream of
To stand up for what we care about
To share our stories
Space-taking in all its forms is an act of empathy for ourselves and an acknowledgement that we all deserve to be here, as we are. We don’t have to shrink ourselves for the world.
To that end, I’ve got two new limited series podcasts rolling out this spring. The first, Let’s Talk Memoir, will launch on Tuesday, March 15th! Let’s Talk Memoir features interviews with memoirists about their writing process, their challenges, what they’ve learned about sharing the most personal of narratives, and their advice for writers contemplating memoir. I’m so excited to bring you these conversations which I hope will reaffirm for you the power of story. More info and links in my next post.
My second project is The Body Myth which features conversations with women about their relationship to their bodies, when they first began judging themselves, how self-surveillance has impacted their lives, and what they’ve come to understand about their bodies and the world. These interviews have opened my eyes even more to how universal body judgment seems to be among Western women and how much time we spend denigrating ourselves. I hope sharing these perspectives will help grow our compassion for one another and ourselves.

What I’m working on-New Podcast announcement! Did you know that 50% of American girls ages 11-13 feel they are overweight? And more than half of the women I’ve interviewed for my body survey reported feeling self-conscious about how they look more than ten times a day—some far more than that. From the dozens of interviews I have conducted for my survey I’ve seen we have a raging body image problem in this country. Women of all sizes, ages, ethnicities, races, and socio-economic backgrounds seem to be able to agree on how poorly they measure up to the Western body ideal and this thinking is wreaking havoc on our personal and collective peace of mind.
To do my part in dismantling diet culture, in February I’ll be launching season 1 of The Body Myth—a limited podcast series featuring interviews with women about their body experience in the US from childhood on. Hear from experts and average American women about what they’ve come to understand their size and weight means and doesn’t mean, how they have navigated diet culture, and their strategies for living true to themselves. Every episode will feature a 200-300 word body image anecdote from listeners. Recent conversations-New Interview I recently got to talk with Maria Olsen Leonard about pattern-breaking, self-clarity, and being able to accept intimacy in your life. Part of what came up was how you can think you’ve done a lot of work, that you understand your weak and strong areas, and then realize—all over again—there is more work to do on yourself.
I had a long road to learning how to be vulnerable in part because I felt so vulnerable as a child which I wrote about in my memoir When She Comes Back. I think I assumed I already had my lumps and so could not hurt other people. That was easy to believe and kept me from seeing where I could still grow.
I dug in some more and saw I was capable of change—and that so much in my life transformed when I committed to honestly looking at myself and the sources of my behavior. It takes courage but is so powerful how life and relationships can shift because of our actions. It really is possible to change; to create your life the way you want to.

I’ve been thinking about views– how so many people can look out upon what objectively might seem like the same landscape or feature but see it so differently from others.
I especially get this feeling about office buildings and apartment buildings. All those identical windows and balconies– portals to the people and families inside, but not one life the same.
And when we look out at the world from our own little landing pads, the sky stretched out above us, the world going on below us, what is actually there is only a fraction of what we perceive because where we’ve come from and what we wish for and how we’re growing are in everything we see.
And this reminds me of how all of us have stories, which is why I think I’m so captivated by rows of windows and balconies and lives and memoir. No two people will ever tell something the same. That is why your perspective always matters.
Memoir is captivating to me for this reason. It’s the story of our experience, what we understood about it then, have come to understand about it now, and all the parts we’re still trying to make sense of. I feel so lucky to have been able to bring my own memoir into the world this year. A few weeks ago I learned When She Comes Back is a finalist in both the 2021 Best Book Awards in the Autobiography/Memoir category and the 2021 Book of the Year Awards in the Memoir category. Over the last two plus years I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing more than a hundred authors, survivors, and people in recovery for And Then Everything Changed. I’ve learned when to push my guests a little further for an answer and when to quiet down and hold space. That has become one of the most important experiences for me, something I didn’t understand as powerfully before. I will keep that lesson with me now wherever I go, whatever I do. This week marks the 100th episode of And Then Everything Changed! Celebrated author of The Courage to Heal and advocate Laura Davis joins me to talk about reconciling with the mother who betrayed her and what the process of writing her memoir The Burning Light of Two Stars: A Mother-Daughter Story, about their relationship was like.
I started the podcast on Halloween of 2019 with my first guest, Paul who took a chance on a new show and a new host, and we created one of my favorite episodes to date. Since then, I’ve gotten to interview people in recovery, survivors, social justice leaders, and so many talented authors. When I was younger, like in my teens and 20s and maybe even some of my 30s, I thought that someday I would become the version of myself that would be better, happier, more worthy.
I was sure there was something missing from me that other people who seemed to have relationships figured out already had; that I needed to change myself if I wanted to finally be happy.
This can be a very tricky time. When we want to belong and to feel better about ourselves we might get the sense that other people know something we don’t. We can easily fall into relationships and groups that reinforce our sense of unworthiness. This is precisely how so many of us are susceptible to high control groups, manipulative people, and even cults. These groups or people often have something to give us: tools, a program, a system, a retreat, a way of eating, etc., that promise to unlock “wholeness” for us.
I got into bad relationships and was also tempted to get involved in groups a few times but I think my mother having joined a cult gave me just enough perspective to defend myself from this kind of coercion. But— I can see a parallel life where I continued to feel I wasn’t worthy of love and self-acceptance. Where I didn’t find my way.
What I’ve learned in interviewing scores of guests for my podcast, deepening my relationship with my mother, and writing my memoir When She Comes Back, is that we are worthy of love as we are. Yes, we can become more courageous, we can learn how to be vulnerable, we can become better listeners, better at knowing what we need, better writers, better friends, but, we came into the world perfectly ourselves. We already are okay.
Knowing that we are enough is the best, most peaceful feeling.

I remember hearing from some writers and writing teachers years ago when I was beginning that the only way to be serious about writing was to commit to doing it every day. Even better, get started at the same time every day, and meet the same word count goal each session.
This blueprint seemed to make sense, and because I was a wound-up-tight-Type-A, appealed to me. The idea I got was that in order to be a “true” writer, to have any chance at all of succeeding, I needed to follow this formula. Especially because I didn’t yet have many stories under my belt and I worried I wasn’t ever going to be good enough.
But— I was a mom to 2 young children and their primary caregiver. I didn’t have a predictable schedule or guaranteed writing sessions. I had snatches of time, moments of inspiration that, if I was lucky, became stories and essays and articles.
I ended up finding a way, my way.
And as I got more practice I could start to feel when I was on to something. Some weeks were very productive and some weren’t, sometimes I got very little sleep, sometimes even less, but more and more I began to trust myself.
I love learning about the creative process—which is different for everyone. Whether you’re a painter or potter, a writer or actor, a singer or dancer, or any combination of the vast creative arts, you’ve probably found a rhythm over time, a knowing about your work. When you feel it, you’re flying; you embody your creativity and your creativity embodies you.
I was so happy to get a chance to interview Jennifer Fliss, author of the forthcoming short story collection THE PREDATORY ANIMAL BALL, for the current issue of The Citron Review.
It was fun to learn about flash and micro fiction, fun to learn about fabulism, and fun to talk with this friend of mine whom I met way back when we both were starting out.

This Week On My ATEC Podcast When Allison Hong Merrill was growing up in the slums of Taiwan her family was riddled with cycles of alcoholism and domestic violence. She couldn’t imagine a different life until she met Mormon missionaries, began attending church and witnessed, for the first time, families who cared for one another. She became more and more active in the church and eventually fell in love, moving to the US to be with her American husband. But soon after, he abandoned Allison, took her money, and left her alone in her new country with no resources. In this episode Allison, whose new memoir Ninety-Nine Fire Hoops is out this month, shares how she found strength, created a new life for herself, and what her past has helped her understand.
