Let’s Talk Memoir – Season 2, Episode 6 ft. the Waterfield Sisters

SEASON 2, EPISODE 6

Keema and Tekla Waterfield join Let’s Talk Memoir for a conversation about being raised by a young single mother in Southeast Alaska after their father left the family. With very little money but a passion for music and art, their mother moved them frequently in pursuit of her education, gigs, and new relationships. As the sisters grew, art and their at-times traumatic childhood led each of the sisters on different paths. Keema wrote Inside Passage, a memoir about her nomadic Alaskan childhood, the toll her upbringing took on her, and the effect it had on her relationship with her mother. Tekla became a singer-songwriter whose most recent release, “New Skies” landed in the NACC Top 30 Folk Album Charts in October of 2021. In this special holiday episode they share their perspective on their childhood, how each of them grappled with their father leaving, and why art has always been central in their lives.

After a week full of writing and podcast news I knew I needed to share an update. It’s been a whirlwind by me– a whirlwind I’m incredibly grateful for.

About ten years ago my first published short story was nominated by Red Fez for the Pushcart Prize and now, I’m so very pleased to announce that it will also appear in my new short story collection HOME IS A MADE-UP PLACE which will be in the world on 2.28.23!

Featuring stories that first appeared/won awards in The Iowa Review, American Literary Review Best New Writing and Sequestrum, plus new stories, this collection won Hidden River Arts’ 2020 Eludia Award for short fiction and will be published by Motina Books.

I’m so happy to see these all of these stories together for the first time between these pages. Reading them over during copyedits brought me back to the worlds within each of them; I missed these people and places who feel like family to me and I am so pleased I get to share them with new readers.

Finally, I’ll be moderating and speaking at AWP this March in Seattle. During our session entitled “Neither The Madonna nor Mommy Dearest: Why and How to Write Real Mothers” my co-panelists and I will be discussing the portrayal of mothers in our work. This panel addresses the misogynistic cultural paradigms for motherhood and explores how memoirists can avoid that trap while writing truthfully about complex and painful experiences. Writers on this panel will share their approach for writing about the complicated maternal relationships without contributing directly to centuries of misogyny w/ ample time for attendee Q & A.

Season 2 of Let’s Talk Memoir is almost here! I’m excited to bring you all of the episodes I’ve been working on. These episodes cover voice, sharing family secrets, braided memoir, nonlinear memoir, what it’s like to move from other creative disciplines to memoir, advocating for our work and of course so much more. 

 

Season 2 of Let’s Talk Memoir will begin on November 15!  That’s Tuesday, November 15th and new episodes will come out weekly.

Ronit’s mom Maureen joins The Body Myth for a conversation about being thrust into dieting by her mother at age 15 with doctor-prescribed pills and how from that point on her relationship with food and her body would forever be painful and complicated. From Weight Watchers to calorie counting to compulsive and binge eating, decades of yo-yo dieting took their toll on her self-worth and ability to eat intuitively. Now, after years trapped on the diet culture roller coaster she shares what she’s learned and how it feels to be free.
