I love September. Growing up knowing September was coming put a flutter in my chest. It meant back to school and a new pair of shoes, the buzz of meeting new classmates, the chance to see friends every weekday, and being on a set schedule again (I’m a Virgo and LOVE a schedule). September is also my birthday month. I’m feeling that flutter in my chest just writing about it now.

Let’s Talk Memoir season 3!I’ve got a launch date for season 3 of Let’s Talk Memoir and am so pleased to announce it will be Tuesday, September 5th, 2023!
I took a few months off the air to read new memoirs, schedule guests, and begin interviews and I am thrilled to announce season 3 production is fully underway! I’ve already got a handful of interviews ready to go and am interviewing additional memoirists over these next months so I can bring you fresh content through Spring 2024. New episodes will be dropping every Tuesday and you won’t want to miss my first guest – one of our memoir greats.
I’m so happy to see a steady stream of downloads even while the show has been on hiatus. This means your recommendations are helping the show reach new listeners. GratitudeOn Saturday I ditched an indoor gym class and went out for a jog on the Burke Gilman trail close to where I live. The trial spans 27 miles and on the few miles I covered, maple, dogwood, and fir trees provide cover, and blackberry bushes spring up, well, wherever they want to.
The trail was fairly empty and I put on an old iTunes playlist and made tracks.
I was pleased to have space and time to myself and so grateful for my body which is different from the version that ran a marathon when I was 30, but still had a little kick here and there.
I have spent so many years (so many!) berating myself for not being (fill-in-the-blanks) enough. Not running fast enough, not sticking to a plan consistently enough, not eating perfectly enough, not drinking water enough, not working on my core enough, not being aware of my posture enough, and these examples are simply just the tip of the iceberg.
Don’t get me started on the barrage of criticism I’ve historically had hammering away at the parts of myself no one can see: my approach to relationships, to writing, to mothering, to social situations, to stress, to cooking meals….again just the tip of the iceberg.
But I felt different while out on Saturday. I jogged slower at times than I hoped I would but was happy to be outside feeling this world I get to live in, doing what I wanted.
Happy to be alive and content, to have the static turned way down low for a change.
On Saturday I didn’t make any sweeping resolutions about how often I would come back and run, or how many miles I needed to log. I am done with rigidity and all-or-nothingness.
I don’t think we’re meant to be 100% about anything. How could people who are complex, enigmatic, ever-changing, so dang human, be all-in every day on everything they’ve committed to.
We are walking contradictions. I mean I’m a vegetarian-pescatarian and have been trying to cut down on dairy and eggs because of factory farming and yet there I was in a T-shirt from my favorite pizza place in Seattle, Big Mario’s. What the heck.
Contradictions might be the most human part of us.
The gifts of contradiction in memoirI’ve found embracing contradiction is also a key in memoir-writing. Memoir is a search for understanding – lots of other elements are of course at play in gripping, evocative memoirs – but what helps keep me engaged in a memoirist’s story is their ability to acknowledge the patterns and contradictions in their behavior. Their courage in exposing the aspects of themselves they worry will make them less likeable or sympathetic draws the reader closer.
Ever notice when a writer portrays themselves in only positive or admirable ways you grow weary or even bristle? Readers intuit when a memoirist is missing self-awareness in their narrative and your reader wants you to be curious about why you do what you do.
Readers of memoir are interested in witnessing a mind at work; to see how the memoirist negotiates complicated experiences, how they meaning-make on the page.
Leaning into the parts of yourself you worry about revealing can infuse your narrative with honesty and heighten the stakes in the story you are telling. If you acknowledge what about you confuses even yourself, you invite the reader in and engage them even more.
So, my suggestion is that you don’t run away from your contradictions. Lean into them and watch how kindness for yourself and the story you are telling grows.

My latest guest on Let’s Talk Memoir is Reed Harkness whose new documentary is Sam Now which traces Reed and his younger brother Sam as they set off to find out why their mother has gone missing and uncover truths neither of them expects. In this episode, we also talk about choosing to move into discomfort in service of sharing the truth, how we as creators can know what’s ours to tell, and Reed shares what he’s learned about vulnerability from documenting 25 years of his family’s story.
Talking with Reed about his family reminded me of the ways kids with insecure parental attachment experience their ability to love and be loved. Though Reed and his brothers are younger than me, grew up across the country from where I lived, and their mom left for different reasons than mine, we have some of the effects of parental loss in common. These early experiences leave their mark and each of us try to make sense of them in our work. His is in film, mine is the memoir WHEN SHE COMES BACK, which turned two this month. Writing WHEN SHE COMES BACK helped me understand more about how first my father and then my mother were able to leave when I was a kid. It gave me a way to make sense of the anxiety I experienced when I was young and my lifelong need to try and control whatever I could. It also helped me uncover the origins of the inherent fear I had that I wasn’t good enough; when kids see their parents leave, they often grow up doubting anyone will find them worth sticking around for.
My memoir is about losing the person your life revolves around, coming of age in the 80s, struggling with body image in the era of the first supermodels, being raised by a single dad, and how we try to hold onto our worth when the people we need most leave.In this book I also got to explore a bit about the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh who my mother followed to India and then to Oregon, and the different ways people forfeit their power. Coercive control happens – is happening – all the time, in organizations and “spiritual” movements, and when parents give up their voice in service to that, children pay the price. My second book Home is a Made-Up Place
My short story collection HOME IS A MADE-UP PLACE which won Hidden River Arts’ Eludia Award was released in February, and in March, April, and May I got to do book events in Seattle, New York, Connecticut, and San Diego. Meeting readers and being in conversation with writers like Kathy Curto, Victoria Buitron, Laurel Peterson, and Sandi Wisenberg made for an exciting and fulfilling spring and I’m grateful to the venues who held these events.
