Frankenstein's Matzah: A Passover Parody

Frankenstein's Matzah: A Passover Parody Frankenstein's Matzah: A Passover Parody by K. Marcus

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Frankenstein's Matzah blends graphic novels with picture books, STEM with Jewish culture, hilarious dialogue with educational information, and Matzah and Monster. There is truly something for everyone packed into this forty-page book! The bright, lively, and fun illustrations make it a delightful read-aloud. The "about the author" is worth a read, too, as only a curious mind could have written this book!

This Is My Bag

This is My Bag: A Story of the Unhoused This is My Bag: A Story of the Unhoused by Roxanne Chester

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I'd describe this book as simple, straightforward, and touching. It offers an introspective look from the perspective of a homeless person who is constantly on the move. The cut art used in the illustrations gives a temporary and transitional feel, which parallels the story's theme. This book is significant for children to read since it portrays a real-world situation that inspires compassion.

La Mala Suerte Is Following Me

La Mala Suerte Is Following Me La Mala Suerte Is Following Me by Ana Siqueira

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When Miguel opens an umbrella in his house and loses his good luck streak, La Mala Suerte is to blame. Bad luck is cleverly illustrated throughout as a dark, ghostly figure. The ending is satisfying and realistic, offering superb examples of strategies kids can use to improve situations, thereby creating good luck. The addition of Spanish words interwoven throughout the story ensures a cultural experience for the reader. I loved the background about the origins of many superstitions, especially the one from Mexico. I think I will carry around an empty suitcase on New Year’s Eve for a new year full of adventures and trips!

Call Your Mother

Call Your Mother Call Your Mother by Tracy Gold

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I found myself cheering on every page of this book! My daughter is now in college, and the words, "Call your mother," sound like music to my ears. Told in rhyme, the book begins with a baby calling out for her mama. As the story progresses, the baby grows older, but no matter her age, the mother-daughter bond is strong and encouraged. Another great gift book by Tracy Gold!

Why We Dance: A Story of Hope and Healing

Why We Dance: A Story of Hope and Healing Why We Dance: A Story of Hope and Healing by Deidre Havrelock

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved learning about the jingle dance and the details of the dresses and traditions. The story, beautifully illustrated in watercolor, compliments the language with a harmonious flow and depth. Additional back matter provides more information about the dance, which is equally interesting!

Milkweed For Monarchs

Milkweed for Monarchs Milkweed for Monarchs by Christine Van Zandt

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The delicate life cycle of the Monarch Butterfly is beautifully depicted in this new picture book by author Christine Van Zandt. Written in rhyme, the upbeat cadence harmonizes with Alejandra Barajas' bold butterfly illustrations. Van Zandt's passion for nature and endangered monarchs can be felt as she imagines a butterfly dreams deep inside the chrysalis. Supplemental text and backmatter offer additional nonfictional information for older readers. The fun facts at the end of the story are a highlight. Highly recommended!

Kadooboo!: A Silly South Indian Folktale Kadooboo!: A Silly South Indian Folktale by Shruthi Rao

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ah, so sweet! Kabir tries to remember the name of the Kadooboo treats he carries to Amma's house. Each encounter in the neighborhood challenges his memory, and the name takes on new variations, making this a fun read-aloud for kids. The colorful illustrations keep you moving through the pages until the hilarious ending. Complete with a recipe and cultural backmatter.
