Going Wide!

A few months ago I posted on my Facebook Group and on the newsletter that I would be pulling my books out of Kindle Unlimited and going wide. I got a lot of support about it at the time, for which I'm very grateful. It's not an easy decision to 'go wide', as it's called. There is a certain safety in Kindle Unlimited. Something that makes marketing feel easier 'FREE in Kindle Unlimited'. I've had readers point out that they pay for Kindle Unlimited, but you get my meaning.

It's comforting to kno...

Worldbuilding Temerin

If you read my newsletters...

... then you've probably read about my inspiration for Temerin society. In short, it comes from my fascination with Irish history.

My ancestors lived in a kind of democracy which was based on voting for leaders from the grass roots. This wasn't unique to Ireland, there were Germanic and Scandinavian systems that were very similar and much of what they did was based on the old 'mot' system of voting. All levels of representation were voted on in ancient Ireland, fro...

Y, Sidney!

If you've read The Officer's Mess, you may have noticed a small and repeated spelling error in my book. I know a lot of you have because I've been emailed, PM'd and generally and rightfully called out on it.

Danielle is an Aussie.

I'm originally Irish, but I've lived in the UK for 33 years. My earliest knowledge about Australia came in the form of soap opera's. First of all, Return to Eden in the 80's which showed on television on RTE1 in Ireland as I was growing up and later, after moving to th...

You may already have noticed but...

... I'm not a great blogger!

For me, blogging is like extracting teeth, though pretty certain I'd find that easier! The fact is, I struggle to think about what I could write. I love writing, worldbuilding, planning a series and these things are definitely useful skills to have and to develop if they're something you want to be able to do. But my day to day life is very quiet. I live in a two-bed flat (apartment for you Americans), with my husband Jonathan and our three cats. I get up early in th...

A Worldbuilder's Toolbox

What skills do you need as a worldbuilder?

Like I said last time, worldbuilding is one of my favourite pass times. I find it so much fun, though obviously it’s not for everyone. A lot of people talk about asking questions and that’s always a good place to start. But what do you ask questions about? What makes up a culture?

In my last article I mentioned some of the fundamentals, politics, religion, history, borders. All of these things matter to a world and will instruct a lot of how it develop...

Why I love Worldbuilding!

Warning!!! Spoilers for Renegades ahead!

One of my favourite things in the world to do is world build. Not because I want to feel godlike, but because of the scope of creativity.

There is nothing like sketching out a world and then discovering it. From the histories and culture to the religions and politics and more. For many that may sound dry but it is not. These things matter to the identity of any nation. They affect how we see ourselves as individuals, how we see our place in our na...
