Vedian, Injustice...

As Drexan Thalos’s cousin, Vedian was on Drexan’s radar from an early age. Because of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his cousin, Vedian has an almost overwhelming sense of right and wrong. When he finds out about Tyne and Aran, finding them, protecting them from his cousin, becomes a reason to get up in the morning, even in the face of his own memories as a prisoner of war and the torture he suffered at the hands of his captors.
Vedian is a natural protector. Joining the Amaran military ...

Tyne, Victim Blaming and Running

I remember writing Tyne in The Smuggler’s Radiant and feeling awful because of the things I knew he’d been through. When I write a character, they tell me their story, but there is the knowledge that all of that comes from some place inside me. Tyne has been abused because I said he was abused. I promised him, at the time, that he would get his happy ending. I also knew that because of the time lapse in the Renegades series, that it would take years before he got that happy ending.
By the time ...

Aran, Abuse and Trigger Warnings

I've been thinking about Trigger Warnings recently.
When I wrote Renegades, there was some slight trauma that the heroines lived with. For Alethia, watching her mother be abused as a slave, for Rhona the events of being kidnapped and on.
Time is passing in the Tessan universe and as it does, the people taken from Endurance are surviving in worlds hostile to humans. Some of the people who buy them as slaves will be kind. Some will think they are kind. Some will be careless and some will be deli...

What do you do when your characters resist falling in love?

As I write this, I still have 2-3k of Angry Survivor to write. It’s the 2nd of November, and I’ve not had a book that was this difficult to write, ever.
Every word of Angry Survivor seems to need hooking and reeling like I’m going fishing for the most elusive fish in history. It’s labour intensive (as much as sitting in a chair can be), difficult and is making progressing with the rest of the series difficult. I’ve even considered dropping this story farther down the line in favour of Wicked Su...

Shifting Priorities and Mental Health

When I announced I was going wide, I did it twice and actually got close to doing it. I got my Renegades series recovered especially for it, with the intent of making it a bit of a thing. I had a few things set up, but I still had a lot to do to make it happen and September was the month I was going to get them done, including putting the books up for preorder, with the hope that it would gain some momentum. I had a lot of things I planned to do to optimise that momentum and while I didn't expec...

Unforeseen delay

A little over a week ago, my father, Maurice Joseph O'Sullivan, went into hospital having suffered a stroke. This isn't the first time and he recovered fully, so we had high hopes. Unfortunately while in hospital he suffered another stroke, this one profound. He didn't regain consciousness to any degree and he finally slipped away this morning.
Of course this has knocked me and my family for six.
Because of this, I'm delaying the publication of The Runaway's Escape to December and The Crime ...
Cover reveals!

Sam has done an amazing job on them. I love them. I'm sad to see the previous covers go, the fact is that people are reacting much more positively to the Warriors covers and then going back to read Renegades, so as much as I love them, it seems a majority of readers overlook Renegades, possibly because of the cover art. As the old saying goes, never judge a book by its cover, but of course people do.
They'll still be available in the print form for the foreseeable future.
Without further a do...

Going Wide!

A few months ago I posted on my Facebook Group and on the newsletter that I would be pulling my books out of Kindle Unlimited and going wide. I got a lot of support about it at the time, for which I'm very grateful. It's not an easy decision to 'go wide', as it's called. There is a certain safety in Kindle Unlimited. Something that makes marketing feel easier 'FREE in Kindle Unlimited'. I've had readers point out that they pay for Kindle Unlimited, but you get my meaning.
It's comforting to kno...

Worldbuilding Temerin

... then you've probably read about my inspiration for Temerin society. In short, it comes from my fascination with Irish history.
My ancestors lived in a kind of democracy which was based on voting for leaders from the grass roots. This wasn't unique to Ireland, there were Germanic and Scandinavian systems that were very similar and much of what they did was based on the old 'mot' system of voting. All levels of representation were voted on in ancient Ireland, fro...

Y, Sidney!

If you've read The Officer's Mess, you may have noticed a small and repeated spelling error in my book. I know a lot of you have because I've been emailed, PM'd and generally and rightfully called out on it.
Danielle is an Aussie.I'm originally Irish, but I've lived in the UK for 33 years. My earliest knowledge about Australia came in the form of soap opera's. First of all, Return to Eden in the 80's which showed on television on RTE1 in Ireland as I was growing up and later, after moving to th...
