The apparently surprising unsurprising profitability of CYBERPUNK 2077.
I say ‘surprising’ because sites like Den of Geek and PC Gamer seem to be having trouble reconciling ‘CYBERPUNK 2077 is a total failure’ with ‘the game in 2020 sold 13.7 million units and only 30 thousand buyers asked for refunds.’ There’s a lot of speculation on just why this happened, and it’s entirely possible that CD Projekt Red is spinning the results somehow*. But here’s another possibility: maybe the remarkably good sale/refund ratio is because most people bought this game for the PC.
And on the PC it worked fine. Well, as fine as any other new game does before its first patch. Don’t get me wrong: I understand that consoles cost money**, and that people like to be able to play games on them. But just because it sucked on the PS…5?***… that doesn’t mean that it sucked everywhere else. Personally, I wish they hadn’t done consoles at all and just gotten the game optimized on PC: I’d be getting the DLC faster if they had.
So I’m not surprised that CDPR is doing all right, after all. For all its flaws, CYBERPUNK 2077 is a fun game.

*Because that’s what video game companies do.
**Why, one of them can cost up to half what I routinely pay for my gaming rigs. That’s a significant amount of change for a stripped-down, deliberately stunted computer.
***Okay, now I’m just being a jackwagon.
The 4/20 Split Honest Trailer.
I just realized what the joke here was. I’m not proud it took me two days.

The alpha read of MORGAN BAROD has been processed.
This bad boy clocks in at just over 85,000 words. Now comes the fun part: the beta read. And the alpha-reread. And the edits. And more edits. And MOAR EDITS, until the end of time.
If you want to be in on the beta read, drop me a line. I am running a little behind, so quick turnover would be helpful.

Sony to Netflix to… Mouse.
Ha! Was able to match the original scansion. Anyway: “Disney has set a massive movie licensing pact with Sony Pictures for the U.S. that promises to bring Spider-Man and other Marvel properties to Disney Plus starting with Sony’s 2022 release slate… The agreement comes on the heels of Sony’s output deal with Netflix for titles in the lucrative post-theatrical release Pay 1 window.”
So, basically: Netflix gets Sony’s stuff first, then it ends up on Disney+ or Hulu or wherever the Mouse holds sway. Which is a better deal for me than yet another streaming service. Which I think I’ve said before.

PS: I had to get cable again, for the first time in almost two decades. Why? Because I literally couldn’t combine my Internet and new phone line without TV coming along for the ride. I wonder what Starlink is gonna look like, two years from now…
Latest WIP cover art for MORGAN BAROD.
Some extra stuff from MORGAN BAROD.
My alpha reader insisted on an interstitial bit. I had to agree with her, so I wrote some. This is a part of it.

If this is what being a prince is like, thought Morgan sourly as he wrote out in full his father’s notes from the Committee meeting, then hurrah for democracy.
Although ‘prince’ wasn’t the right word. Officially, Edward MacLaurence was just one person of five on the Emergency Committee for the salt-towns. He wasn’t even the head of it; that honor rotated through the committee every month. But in practice all the other Committee members looked to Morgan’s father for direction on every issue more important than quarterly adjustment of harbor fees. He didn’t always get his full way, but nothing got done unless Committeeman MacLaurence had at least conceded the necessity for it.
That still didn’t make him a king, Morgan decided. Dad’s probably more like a baron. Which would make me the… heir? To all of this?
So, they’re adapting WEREWOLVES WITHIN into a movie, and I feel old.
Not so much that they’re making a movie based on a video game…
…but because I had no idea that WEREWOLVES WITHIN existed. It’s a VR game, you see. Admittedly, the kids have a VR rig, but not one for the PS4, so now there’s an entire range of video games out there that I’m mildly clueless about. So: I feel old now.

PS: What? Oh, I assume that it’ll suck. Video game movies usually do.
