Like, seriously, this could go either way. I’m obviously hoping for pollen, because then it’ll go away once I’ve built up enough Claritin in my system. But if I don’t post anything for a couple of days, that’s why.

04/27/2025 Snippet, THE ICE AWAITS.
Getting there.
Dammit, I was sure that everybody on the crew who knew how to throw together a still was off with Budi. I was able to stop them from making hooch during the job — rush deadlines and moonsshine don’t mix — but slushfitters will drink. We’ve already gotten people blowing off roll call, and what am I gonna do about it? Job’s done, and I already used up the make-work stuff. I’d stop running roll call altogether if Ilga hadn’t pointed out that we’d want to know if somebody missed it two days running.
Ehh. She’s not wrong.

Yeah, she wasn’t wrong. Most of the missing crew showed up for next roll call, looking green and bleary-eyed, but we got three missing. Two from yesterday, and one more today. Let’s just say I’m not surprised that these three went out on a bender, either. I just want to know where they’re getting the booze. At this point I wouldn’t mind having a snort of the evidence myself.

Previous post aside, Halfway to Halloween went very well…
…made site fee back, sold some extra, hopefully sent some people on the primrose path. Also talked up my artists and, interesting, the woman who made my acrylic sign. A bunch of fellow-vendors were eager to get her contact information. A shame I don’t get a commission on that.
Sleep now.

The Madness
Today I realized that it’s been three days since we got a message from Salmarina Europa HQ. It’s been busy — we did make four weeks, in the end, but the deadline was almost in minutes instead of hours — but that can explain maybe a day. Two days is scary. Three days had me running through the airlocks to Chumley’s new office.
I was half-expecting her to chew my head off for missing this, but she’s the weirdest nogo I’ve ever met. Chumley was more interested in fixing the problem than blaming somebody else for it. “We began having intermittent communications failures after we started the prelaunch cycle for restarting the base’s life support system,” she told me. “The problem grew worse after the system went fully online. We haven’t been able to communicate with Salmaria for the last two days. Whatever the effect is, it only extends for three kilometers out from the center of the base. I have a team establishing a new transmitter from outside the dead zone. Once they’ve reestablished a connection, we’ll run a cable back to here.”
That sounded reasonable, but: “Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked her.
Chumley regarded me. “Station Chief Buckley,” she responded, “what would you have been able to do about it?”
