The idea of 'heretics' came from what I wrote there and I knew I wanted to keep that as part of whatever original work I moved them to. The meaning behind the heretics was being something other than the world you're in wants you to be, so that was where I started. It took me a long time to work that into fiction, because I needed to learn the lesson before I could put it in the book. Like many people, I grew up in an environment I couldn't make myself fit in, and it took me until recently to truly make the decision to be who I am instead of converting to who the world wants me to be. I hope that message reaches people through the pages of the book. (less)
