Mistrusting the computer machine

My dad is a private pilot. He flew up here to Birmingham yesterday and took me for a ride. We talked a lot about the physics of flying. Wow, he is a font of information. Of course, this is not nearly as impressive as the fact that when I was in college, he was building an airplane in the basement. Not a radio-controlled airplane—he's built those too, and boats, and helicopters—but an actual airplane that he was going to sit in and pilot. He didn't finish it because he gave himself carpal tunn...

Cover envy

I have covers on the brain. I turned in THE BOOK WITH THE TITLE SO FABULOUS THAT I DARE NOT SPEAK ITS NAME last month. It will be published on July 1, 2011, and my editor has already asked me for descriptions of the characters so the art department can depict them on the cover. It's ironic that the cover is so incredibly important to sales of the book, yet the author generally gets no say in it whatsoever...but I will say two things about my covers. (1) When I've had a big concern, my editors...

REVAMPED

In Vamped, Gina and her minions defeated a vampire vixen, a psycho-psychic and the vampire council of Mozulla, Ohio. Gina was all ready to expose vampires to the world in all their fanged fabulosity…until the Feds arrived to sweep everything under the rug and make them an offer they couldn't refuse.

What I left out

THE BOYS NEXT DOOR and ENDLESS SUMMER do not contain real people or events or even places, but they certainly were inspired by my experience growing up on Lake Martin near Alexander City, Alabama. I have been caught in a thunderstorm on the lake, I have nearly lost a sailboat mast in deep waters, I know what it feels like to wake up outdoors at 6 a.m. (though not in my boyfriend's truck), and my brother had a spectacular waterski crash that left him needing stitches in his forehead. But of co...

MY FAKE BOYFRIEND IS BETTER THAN YOURS

My lost year

Last week I turned in The Book With The Title So Fabulous That I Dare Not Speak Its Name, which will be published by MTV Books next July. I posted more about that on the MTV Books Blog in case you're interested.

And now...I'm trying not to get that sinking feeling. I have plenty to do. I'm cleaning, for one thing, and answering my e-mail from July, and in the next few days I need to start writing proposals. But I don't have another book under contract, so the future is uncertain. I HATE it whe...
