Barnaby Brown and The Time Machine.
This is a review for “Barnaby Brown and The Time Machine.” This is a young adult fantasy novel full of engaging action and entertainment. I found this one very intense as it goes through several stages, since it is about time travel as it moves onto a more intense plot involving aliens.
This one was a surprising read, at least for me. Surprising good, exciting, fantasy driven. The story starts with Barnaby getting used to his new school in New York, since he is a newly arrived Englishboy. But as he meets friends and the story gets interesting, we begin to see how curious he is and how much potential for something more there is now in the story. The story evolves fast, and the plot thickens. He begins to time travel and discover new things about how time works, what science can do, and finally what he holds inside. As a new arrival from another planet teaches him to protect his world from a new threat, he unleashes that potential and we see him doing fantastical things only a hero does.
This story is rich in ideas and imagination, which is particularly what I am all about since I am also writing my first young adult fantasy novel called “BENJAMIN JONES. The Call of The Shaman” to be released soon. I felt transported to all the places and situations in the story. “BARNABY BROWN and The Time machine” is very well-written and very creative. I find that we all need some of this to ease our own minds and expand our imagination. I really recommend this one. Personally, I like the fact that all of the author’s books aim to expand imagination, and these stories push you to ask yourself “what if I was in this situation?? What would I do??” The situations are somewhat fantastical, highly imaginative, and they offer great insights into reality.
I give him a great 4 stars.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
He says…
A Scot now living in Singapore, which means I’m confused by warm rain and freezing cold cinemas. Nevertheless, I have some fantastic space and views to allow my creativity to wander.
I completed my first book in Scotland, a test, to see if I could get through the process and layer stories to keep them fluid and fun. Everyday, my 3 hour round trip on the bus from Edinburgh to the Scottish Borders allowed me a little sandbox in which to bury myself and focus.
I love adventure, let’s face it, who doesn’t? My work so far is science fiction but with a strong tether in reality. It’s situational, questioning how you would react in these circumstances. The first book was focused on adults but now I’m working on a series (Barnaby Brown) that I think encapsulates the best elements of all true universal adventures and is aimed to children and adults alike, an adventure they can all take at bedtime or whenever.

The right one.
It so happens that life is really just a mirror of us. Not a mirror of our desires. Because most of us desire goodness for ourselves and for others. And most of us also desire good lives. But this does not really help. Thoughts and feelings do not create your life, but behaviors do. The right habits daily mold your character, build your life slowly.
1- If a man wants a beautiful and healthy looking woman, he must be that; which means that he must take care of his health, mind and body. Once he becomes that, he can now attract and get the same from a woman.
2- If a woman wants a good and decent man who seeks true love, then she must become opened to meet good and decent men in the right places, but she must be patient and not give herself easily. She must give herself time to fall for such man. She must get to know him deeply and not fall for romantic or lustful words and advances.
These are just two examples out of the many. Point being that in life you must become first. You want love?? Become it first in your daily behaviors towards yourself and others. You want success?? Become that yourself in the same way. You want happiness?? Become that as well. Life will give you what you already are inside yourself. So many people reach wealth status, have big families, great positions in society; however, this is not love and happiness. They must become inside themselves first. Take this to heart and adopt better habits. Take care of your body and mind. Become yourself all you seek in life.

The best way.
The world is what it is today, with its wars, with its greed, with its hateful people, with its unhappy people, with its unloving people, because most seek not to actually better themselves. They want others to do it. They want politicians to do it. They want Jesus to do it. They want Muhammad to do it. They get into relationships, get married, have kids, so they can do the transformation. What about themselves…?? Everybody keeps pointing fingers to the next person.
Parents are the initiators. They teach their kids with their words. “Son, don’t smoke and drink.” And yet they do it themselves. Kids grow up to be chain smokers and get in trouble because they become drunkards. Or there’s the kid that grows up struggling with weight problems in adulthood, his heart falters because of it, he suffers in and out of the hospital. Why…?? Because his parents didn’t care about health themselves, so with their immoral habits they taught their kid the same. And what about politics and attachment to this garbage…?? The same. Kids grow up arguing and disliking others belonging to another party or with different opinions, because in childhood their parents were really stubborn and mediocre as well.
What I’m saying here is that what really matters in life is not others, but yourself. You help others with your change, not with your words. Wake up. See the reality of it. Don’t keep denying it. If you actually bring change to yourself, you can then really help and heal others. What you think and how you feel doesn’t create reality. Your daily habits do. Saying that you love people is not actual change. Saying that you try to be healthy is not actual change. You either do it or not. Because it is all about self-development. It is all my life is. That is why I ascend. That is why I write the way I write. So, ask yourself about your daily habits. What do you need to change to give better example to your family, kids, spouse, friends, the world??

Hidden miracles.
Life might shake us, but there is always a reason. Sometimes life tries to tell you something important, but your mind is too busy. Silence your anxious mind and listen. Learn. Grow.
I remember when my father had just died. The confusion, the anger, the fear and intimidation of facing the world without my father. I was alone with my little brothers and my mother. Barely making enough money to survive. Living in Texas, and in a place very different from where I’d been born and had spent my childhood years. But, after years and years of self-hatred and self-pity, I started to see a light in me. I was so exhausted of failing and torturing myself that I was pushed to observe my own suffering. I had never wanted this life, but I had to deal with it anyway.
Nothing that I did worked and, even worse, I didn’t understand why. I was going to church back then. I was praying. I was taking care of my family. I was a good and decent human being. I was lost. But this light I saw in me was growing. And, not too soon, I learned that quite often our minds are so overwhelmed with our own problems that we miss life. The wholeness of life. And the wholeness of life is where the miracles hide. The miracles are not in religion, or in family, or in the nation, or in the money we make; but they are in the observation.
The observation is the attention we put into life’s moments. But this observing action must be done firstly by silencing the mind. You know, by not being so attached to thoughts of misery and anger, and envy and frustration. Plainly put, by not overthinking and filling the mind with anxiety. Our minds dictate how we feel about life. Life then is filtered through our minds. Life will be whatever the content of your mind is. So, let go of the stress, and of the frustration, and of wanting to control and possess. Flow with life. Do your best, and then let it go. Let it be. Listen to life, but for that keep a mind that is silent and not arrogant. Arrogance and thinking that you must always win and have your way. This is what brings suffering, and failure, and tears into your experience.

Chat with a Necromancer.
So, I am about to begin editing my first young adult fantasy/mystery novel to be published soon. Titled: “BENJAMIN JONES. The Call of The Shaman.” Here’s a sample of the story. I would really appreciate your opinions, thoughts, comments on it. As an artist, I learn much from this. For me, my craft is all about learning and becoming better and better, as in all other aspects in my life. Thanks!

So, Ben has begun his quest with two great friends. He has traveled much and discovered a world of magic and danger. He has discovered that he is a shaman and cursed. He is now for the first time meeting his greatest foe, Lord Furvusmortem.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN – “CHAT WITH A NECROMANCER.“
The shape materialized out of the darkness, and it seemed like it had been part of such death of light all along. Soon, Ben became aware of the man who was walking towards him. Yes, there was no doubt. The man carried dark magic. He was himself powerful dark magic.
And he was the one Benjamin Jones had sensed so clearly since the train. Maybe he was connected somehow to this man. Perhaps the curse had something to do with it. Nothing was fantasy here. The phenomena he felt in his bones was indescribable, and yet so precise and real.
Once the man stood a few feet in front of him, under the bright light, Ben saw the face of the man who had been in that bar, or vision, or whatever it had really been. He was holding his fedora in one hand and the cigar in another. The swirly clouds of toxic smoke stung Ben’s throat. He drew back and coughed heavily.
The man saw this and snickered, then muttered disdainfully, “You’re weak.” After he sat on a stool by the bar, he looked at Ben, who was still affected by the smoke and coughing heavily. He put away his cigar. “Alright! Jesus. You can stop now. What do you want, boy??”
When the man picked up the mystical object from the counter, he seemed confused about it. He was attracted by its energy, like two opposite polarities. Suddenly, the man groaned and dropped the hare on the ground. It had burned him. But, even though the hare had been dropped, it did not break.
Ben stopped coughing. He was now glaring at the mysterious man. He was really feeling his rage. His hands were shaking. The man gave out some kind of ill scent and repulsive force. It rattled something inside Ben, and being a few feet away from this man was provoking him.
He was suddenly taken by his rage, and he couldn’t help but draw out his emotions in waves. There was a glint of furious light. And then his body was covered by pulses of magic which followed his rage. But, before Ben did anything, the man saw the tremendous energy about to burst off him.
Ben clearly had lost control, because the burst of energy would grow in a circle and destroy the place. The man quickly stepped aside and mumbled something only the spirits from the other side heard. Then there was a powerful swirl of winds around Ben.
This held the burst of energy in order to stop its growth. The man finally gave a hand clap and Ben was thrown backwards against a couple of chairs.
Then, unconcerned, the man went around the bar counter and served himself some Whiskey. “Take your time to calm down, boy,” he said with a warning in his voice.
As Ben got up, his hands started shaking again, his eyes consumed by fury, and he was preparing for a new attack. At this, the man rolled his eyes, placed his drink on the counter and said, “Oh, the stupidity of youth! I don’t wanna have to kill you, or your friends.”
Ben saw that he was moving his hands and creating two circles of fire. Somehow he also witnessed him in his mind’s eye murdering his friends, so he calmed down in order to find out who he was and how he could be stopped. He had to be stopped.
The man had now spirits of the dead about him. The hollows of their eyes where white and dead. Their bodies just long and obscure clouds of smoke. Head horns appeared to be just more of the toxic gas making their bodies.
This wraith activity would’ve frightened anybody, but Ben himself had crossed the paranormal already. And he already knew that nothing was what it seemed.
Ben had seen a ghoul like one of these on the train just before the derailment had occurred. And he had definitely felt them stalking his dreams as well. Night after night. Day after day. He had been always stalked by these dark forces within himself, and he always had fought to balance them.
And ghouls, these dark forces live right next to light forces within ourselves, do they not…?? This is our own personal struggle. And just like Ben, we must balance these forces before the darkness overtake us. The darkness exists in the world as our own inner projections. We all have them. So perhaps Ben is not the only one cursed here.
In balancing himself, Ben stepped back and the mysterious man stopped himself. The damned vanished as soon as the man whispered his command in the old language. This man seemed possessed when he did so, and Ben was beginning to understand who he might be. But he needed to be sure.
Ben studied his features really closely. He was dressed like a gentleman of high class. He looked confident, powerful, and with a certain poise. But there was cruelty and arrogance on his face. And he appeared to lead the ghouls, just like Ben did with the wolves.
Then, without more hesitation, Ben quizzed, “Are you The Necromancer of The Four Winds…??”
The man stopped drinking suddenly, pondered the question as if remembering, then replied, “Well, yes. But that sounds too cruel, Ben. And long. And pretentious. So, just call me Lord Furvusmortem. A king gave me that honor.”
Ben thought of that name. Furvusmortem. Were did I hear that…??, he repeated in his mind. He didn’t remember. But that name sure brought chills to his marrow.
“Doesn’t Furvusmortem mean Obscure Death??” Ben asked him while recalling his Latin studies’ class. A class he hated, by the way.
He thought about this, then said, “Well, yes. But it only sounds cruel and dreadful when you translate it into English,” he added amusingly serious. “Don’t judge me, boy. Unless you wanna end up like one of my monstra parvum.”
“You mean the ghouls I just saw…??” Ben had asked a question without really needing an answer. He knew what they were. He felt the morbid connection to the dead creatures already. “Why were they on the train…?? And why did they cause the accident??”
Lord Furvusmortem suddenly sent a chair rushing at Ben with just a single swipe of his hand! Ben’s knees were bent and he plumped down without even knowing. This man was surely more than what he seemed.
Then the man continued, “They were following you. You stink, boy! You know, because of the curse and all. And they caused the train’s derailment because they are just terrible imps without a soul. What did you think?!”
Ben was now filled with questions. About the curse. About this Furvusmortem guy. About the ghouls. About everything! He rushed, “Who are you?? Why are you here?? What do you want with me??” As he said this, he tried to get up from the chair but couldn’t. It was as if he were glued to it. “What is this?! Why can’t I get up?!” he groaned angrily.
Lord Furvusmortem held his cigar and looked at Ben with sickening mockery. “Look at you, boy. Jeez. You don’t even know who you are. Less who I am.” He stood up, finished his drink, and walked to him. “You know what, I will tell you the story. So, pay attention, or you’ll never know why you are destined to die by my hands.”
Once he moved another chair with the swipe of his hand and sat next to Ben, he continued, “This story goes beyond the legend of the wolf boy, which you have undoubtedly heard I’m sure. This story begins with The Sitchin Gods. They who came down from the heavens. They who were the origin of light and dark, of good and evil.” He stopped and continued smoking his cigar.
Ben’s face had become stiff, emotionless, not because he was afraid but because he was shocked by what Furvusmortem had said. ‘You are destined to die by my hands.’
What did he mean…?? Why did he want to kill him?? But still, Ben remained put. Not that he could move or go anywhere. He just listened and held back his anger. He needed to know more.
And so, well behind clouds of black smoke, Lord Furvusmortem’s stare seemed to pierce the boy’s soul. Then he said, “The gods settled in the lands of The Sumerians. And these ones prospered because of it. They built incredible cities, technologies, temples. They grew spiritually, scientifically, economically. The Sumerians became highly intelligent, so one of them started a rebellion. He was called Mancer, because he had learned the sacred magic of the spirits and the stars…
“He was a visionary and wanted to free the people from these so-called gods, because he knew that tyranny was coming. Some didn’t believe him. Too many had fallen under the Sitchin’s control. Until one night of rebellion he was captured, tortured, and cursed to a never-ending state of death. A necro state. Damned to walk the earth deathless, and lifeless, for eternity. Do you know how that feels, boy?? To be not here, and not there either. A sort of a saeva limbus. An oblivion.”
As he started to amble away from the light, Ben tried to wriggle himself free. But he did it carefully in order to not pull the chair and bring noise. He used his magic. He focused, cleared his mind and felt his energy cancel out the chair’s grip. But as he stood up, Lord Furvusmortem had already disappeared in the obscurity of the place.
All of a sudden, a furious growl echoed in the dining hall! The beast emerged from the shadows of the place. This creature seemed possessed. The beast was a rabid dog with teeth as sharp as knives, and of the size of a lion. Certainly the beast had been summoned from the same pits of hell.
He moved with demonic speed towards Ben. There had been no time to react, or even think. Almost instantly then, the beast had him pinned against the ground. Ben fought him, but it was useless. The eyes of the creature seemed cold and cruel, just like his master’s. But the dog soon felt the aura of the wolf boy. He was the leader of the pack after all. The dog knew that.
Benjamin Jones whispered to the rabid dog, then with a soft and tamed demeanor the large beast licked his face. The slobber was friendly but disgusting at first, but soon Ben was rubbing the tummy of his new friend who was just as docile as a baby rabbit. The dog’s tail went side to side joyfully.
Ben felt proud of himself. And there was a powerful awe in him as well. He had just transformed a most ferocious beast into a cuddly puppy. And, the best of all, he also felt the strong connection to the dog. He then recalled that dogs and wolves belonged to the same family. Obviously, Ben did so as well.
Now, from beyond the darkness the applause sounded with poise. “Magnificent. You are indeed the wolf boy. The reincarnation of the legend. Cursed by the same man who became The Necromancer of the Four Winds after he was also cursed.” As Lord Furvusmortem said this, his shape strutted out of the curtain of blackness.
Ben was now paying attention to the arrogant Lord of The Dead. “So, you were the man in the story…?? You are the mancer?? Cursed to walk with the dead. But what do you want from me?! I did not curse you,” Ben said.
He did not look amused anymore. His eyes turned colder, crueler. He suddenly stopped, looked at him sharply, then directed Ben’s view to a big mirror hanged upon the wall behind the counter. The surface looked now silvery and unstable, because it was moving, flowing like the waters of a river.
It quickly became obvious that the mirror was turning into some kind of portal or window, because lost in the silvery substance you could see demons almost drowning in it. Trapped maybe. Was this a vision of hell…?? Ben took a few steps back. The dog was now somewhere whimpering.
The lamenting and tormenting were being half muffled by the incessant sounds of the ardent flames devouring them like crispy wood. Why was the necromancer showing this to Ben…?? What was the point of all this??
There was another dimension there. Perhaps the underworld. He felt the connection. And, right then and there, Ben understood what he was destined to face. Did he even have a choice, or had it been made for him already??
Ben’s face was cringing, not out of fear but out of torture. He was somehow feeling what the poor souls felt. He was sensitive to their hellish plight. He wondered why they were there. He wondered if they’d be stuck there for eternity. Then a tear rolled down his face. But he knew he couldn’t do anything to help them.
While Ben was taken by this, the voice of Lord Furvusmortem came to him, “We are fated to each other. We are cursed. Good and evil, Benjamin.” As he said this, the portal to hell closed, the mirror shattered, and winds arose from the four points in the room.
This lasted for a few more seconds, then Lord Furvusmortem vanished in the shadows of the dining hall. His fedora, which had fallen on the floor, shook and quickly vanished. Then it all turned black, and the winds died down.

New worlds of magic.
Quite often, it so happens that people fall into fascination–fascination for TV celebrities, for the politics battle, for lifestyles of this and that, unhealthy food commercials, etc. This takes over their lives. Of course, without them realizing it; because it is a subconscious takeover. They claim to choose to do what they do in order to feel good about themselves, but the reality is that they are prisoners of what the TV has put into their minds.
But outside this prison, there is much more to discover. I know, I was there; and now I am outside the prison. Books. Stories. New information. Philosophy which makes us think. Adventures to expand our own imagination. This is my world now, and it is why I write this post and all that I write. The greatest asset we have as human beings is the capacity to steer our lives and be happy, to be conscious and learn. Well, great part of this is what good books do, because they expand your awareness. Let’s say, for example, you are having a bad day, you are hurting, you lost someone special, you are somehow troubled. How do you move on…??
Well, if your mind is full of society’s turmoil, anxiety, and nonsense, be it from TV or any other gossip, then you have not much opportunity to move on. But if your mind is powerful, imaginative, filled with great knowledge from books, then you can have the strength and imagination to immerse into other activities instead of wallowing in your hurt. This goes hand in hand with spiritual growth, because spiritual (not religious) growth is about greater awareness, thinking for yourself, and detaching yourself from society’s influence.

The Greatest Clarity.
So, I was thinking the other day about imagination, the power to create, not just works of art but to create solutions and a better life for oneself. Because that is what imagination does. Imagination is meant to expand our minds, not make us more intellectual but more compassionate and able to create from emotional understanding. The more imagination, the more you will understand of yourself, life, others. The more imagination, the more intelligence.
As a writer of nonfiction, of spiritual and self-help, and now of young adult fantasy books, I know the great gifts of imagination. I know how strengthening this “muscle” in your mind gives you expansion of mind and great wisdom. And I was writing the other day, just finishing my young adult novel coming out soon, titled “BENJAMIN JONES. The Call of The Shaman” which I am planning to make a series.

I was thinking how many of us simply fall into addiction and depressions due to not strengthening imagination. If you have imagination, then you can envision yourself happy, in love, positive, without anxiety and addictions. How wonderful it is to see yourself better in your mind, and then it is easier to adopt healthier habits. This is something which intelligence gives you. True imagination expands your intelligence, so you see yourself making better choices. And if you can see it, then you can change and do it.

Out of the rut.
I usually encounter people who talk a lot about their illness or problems, like anxiety, like OCD, like anger issues, like frustrations, etc. etc. They go on and on trying to get attention and pity from others. Specially social media is plagued by people venting their illnesses, problems, frustrations. But, unbeknownst to them, they are making their issues and frustrations more powerful; for the attention you give to thoughts makes them even stronger and assimilated by your entire biological system.
Assimilated by your entire biological system means that these thoughts of frustration and negativity become powerful feelings, and these feelings become your experience in life–i.e., your whole identity, or how you experience yourself. But, on the other hand, if you were to empower your positive traits, your talents, your dreams, your strengths, then you would become free and you would feel capable of being love and happiness.
With this, I am not saying you are not going through a rough patch, or that your traumas are fake; but I am saying that you should think and talk about your positives, to empower yourself, to not live tied to misery, and to not feel trapped and doomed. You define yourself by this. Your true identity is discovered only if you have courage to detach from the negative. Life is about self-discovery. You are life. I talk about this in my books very clearly, with many examples to help you understand this and thus change your mindset and behavior. Because I am all about this.

The image in your mind.
Life is about how you feel about yourself. Life is about self-discovery. Most people, as I used to long ago as well, tend to seek themselves, their identities, their value, out there in the world; however, this search is the opposite of self-exploration. It is why the focus must remain always on you, on self-development.
Two essential things to do:
1- Take care of your physical health: The most important thing is the energy from food and drink. In order to feel well, strong, full of energy and positive, you must not eat heavy foods and drink anything that is going to poison you and make you feel negative in any way.
2- Do not escape your past, your hurt, your troubles, your misery, but deal with it. Embrace it. Study it. Transform it into understanding and wisdom. The worst thing you can do is escape it through distractions–i.e., going out with friends, watching tv, traveling, relationships, etc. Deal with yourself first.
In order to feel great, successful, loved, happy with yourself, you must meet yourself. All of yourself. And make sure you accept your past, and work towards moving on. The image you build of yourself in your mind must be truthful and positive. If this happens, you will be strong and confident without caring about what others say or do.

BENJAMIN JONES. The Call of The Shaman.
This post is about my upcoming young adult/mystery/fantasy novel. I am currently writing the last few chapters. This will be a story like no other. My first fiction novel. You’ll have entertainment, adventure, and you’ll learn as the protagonist discovers himself throughout his journey. Ben is an orphan, and he doesn’t think he can go on this quest and defeat dark forces; but he learns about the strong human spirit, and he does this with good friends by his side.
A LITTLE COMMENT ON THE STORY:
Since his parents’ believed death, he has become an orphan, shunned by his own people (American indigenous people, “The Pawnee”), and sent to an orphanage run strictly under the watchful eye of Miss Danksmill.
Ben has visions and dreams in which his father appears to him. His father then, he will give him purpose, motivation to believe in himself. Ben will have to recover a sacred, shamanic object which possesses the greatest wisdom of all shamans past, and which also opens a portal or bridge into the spiritual dimension.
This quest will not be journeyed alone, because he will count with the support of friends, very unique friends. Among these friends, a naughty but decent, ancient god and now ghoul, and also his shadow. Literally his shadow!

This story is unique. But if I had to name the books that inspired me to write it, or even compare it, then, I would mention “Harry Potter” – “The Alchemist” “The Chronicles of Narnia.” My book brings an essence from these 3. But I also add a little spiritual vision or wisdom into it by a character named Adit. Adit will be Ben’s spiritual guru and friend, and his main support to find himself and his magic.
So, follow me to find out when it’s released. Join the adventure!
