If this Man comes to the Door let him in, it’s your Father

While I was flying internationally I would be away from home anywhere from for four to six weeks at a time. My two Daughters were just toddlers. One day, when I returned home after being away for six weeks, I entered the house to find a picture of me hanging on the inside of the front door.

I asked, “Why is there a picture of me on the front door?”

My wife replied, “I put it there to let the girls know that if this man comes to the door, let him in, it’s your father.

Needless to say, I got the point.

Breaking a Sweat at 20 below Zero.

All summer long on the farm we would bail hay, harvest corn and fill the silos so we can feed cattle all winter long. One morning myself and my brother Mark were feeding the cattle in my grandfather’s barn that could feed around 200 head of cattle. Each morning at 4:00 am we feed the cattle silage, sweet feed, a mixture of molasses and wheat, and hay. This was a long process that took two people over an hour. My grandfather always told us that the animals were to be feed before we were.

This particular morning Mark and I were feverously working to feed the cattle. As we worked, we were sweating through our clothes. Trying to cool off we took off layer after layer of clothing, to the point where we were just wearing a shirt.

That morning our grandfather came to the barn to check on our progress. When he saw us wearing only shirts he shouted, “You boys put your coats back on it’s 20 degrees below zero in here.”

Moral of the Story? Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t sweat at 20 below zero.

Life Lesson #22

Hercules & the Wagoner

A Farmer was driving his wagon along a miry country road after a heavy rain. The horses could hardly drag the load through the deep mud, and at last came to a standstill when one of the wheels sank to the hub in a rut.

The farmer climbed down from his seat and stood beside the wagon looking at it but without making the least effort to get it out of the rut. All he did was to curse his bad luck and call loudly on Hercules to come to his aid. Then, it is said, Hercules really did appear, saying:

“Put your shoulder to the wheel, man, and urge on your horses. Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it and whining about it? Hercules will not help unless you make some effort to help yourself.”

And when the farmer put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses, the wagon moved very readily, and soon the Farmer was riding along in great content and with a good lesson learned.

The Moral of the Story: Self help is the best help. Heaven helps those who help themselves.

Veterans Day is the Day to Thank a Veteran and to Save a Veteran

When Veterans day and Memorial day roll around it always bring back memories of those that I knew serving as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. There were those of us that made it back and those of us that did not. The memories of the good times we had and the bad times.

Being in combat does change you perception of what a veteran would call the real world. The world of war is a place of violence and human atrocities. A world that bends the mind and brings on a darkness that can be hard to overcome. Taking yourself out of that world and back to the real world is a challenge some cannot overcome, resulting in despair and even suicide.

If you know a veteran that is coping well, a thanks is always appreciated. If you know a veteran that is not. Introduce the veteran that you know is doing well to the one that is not. You could be saving a life that was willing to die for you.

Salt and the Hunters

A group of Elk hunters would go together and rent a cabin for the hunting. Each season the cooking responsibilities moved from on hunter to the next. The one rule was that if you complained about the cooking you would then be the cook for the rest of that season and when it was your turn again to cook.

Ruben had not had his turn at cooking until this season. He was not wanting to cook so, he set out to cook so badly that some one would complain and he would believed of the responsibility. The first night he heavily salted the food and then served to the other hunters. Leonard was the first to taste the food. After his first bite Leonard exclaimed, “WOW, that is salty.” then realizing what he said he added, “Just the way I like it.”

Life Lesson #21

[image error]Library of Congress Aesop Fable

The Tortoise & the Ducks

The Tortoise, you know, carries his house on his back. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot leave home. They say that Jupiter punished him so, because he was such a lazy stay-at-home that he would not go to Jupiter’s wedding, even when especially invited.

After many years, Tortoise began to wish he had gone to that wedding. When he saw how gaily the birds flew about and how the Hare and the Chipmunk and all the other animals ran nimbly by, always eager to see everything there was to be seen, the Tortoise felt very sad and discontented. He wanted to see the world too, and there he was with a house on his back and little short legs that could hardly drag him along.

One day he met a pair of Ducks and told them all his trouble.

“We can help you to see the world,” said the Ducks. “Take hold of this stick with your teeth and we will carry you far up in the air where you can see the whole countryside. But keep quiet or you will be sorry.”

The Tortoise was very glad indeed. He seized the stick firmly with his teeth, the two Ducks took hold of it one at each end, and away they sailed up toward the clouds.

Just then a Crow flew by. He was very much astonished at the strange sight and cried:

“This must surely be the King of Tortoises!”

“Why certainly—” began the Tortoise.

But as he opened his mouth to say these foolish words he lost his hold on the stick, and down he fell to the ground, where he was dashed to pieces on a rock.

The Moral of the Story: Foolish curiosity and vanity often lead to misfortune.

Bosting is the trait most attributable to humiliation and to death if your brain doesn’t engage.

Once, Twice Thrice

An old man and his new wife, after their wedding ceremony headed home in a single mule cart. After a few miles the mule sat down in the middle of the dirt road. The old man simply said, “That’s ONCE.” A few minutes later the mule rose and started down the road once again. But in a few more mile the mule sat down again. The old man not moving again said, “That’s TWICE.” The new bride was a bit perplexed but remained silent. Soon the mule rose again and started down the road. But in less than a mile the mule sat down AGAIN. The old man exclaimed, “That’s THRICE.” He then reached under the seat of the cart and drew out his shotgun and shot the mule dead.

The new wife was so upset that he shot the mule shouted, “You have killed the only mule we had. It is still many miles to the house. How are we to get home NOW.”

The old man turned to his wife and said, That’s ONCE.”

A Boy and the Filberts

[image error]A Library of Congress Aesop Fable

A Boy was given permission to put his hand into a pitcher to get some filberts. But he took such a great fistful that he could not draw his hand out again. There he stood, unwilling to give up a single filbert and yet unable to get them all out at once. Vexed and disappointed he began to cry.

“My boy,” said his mother, “be satisfied with half the nuts you have taken and you will easily get your hand out. Then perhaps you may have some more filberts some other time.”

The moral of the story: Do not attempt too much at once.

The Preacher, Priest and the Rabi

Two old friends, a Baptist Preacher and a Priest, were go fishing. A Rabi in the nearby Synagogue saw the two preparing their boat for the trip. The Rabi came over and asked, “Would you have room for one more?” The priest and the preacher looked and each other and said, “Surely Rabi, you are more than welcome.”

Once they were on the lake fishing, the Priest said, “Oh my word. I left my lunch in the truck. I will back right back.” The priest stood up and walked on the water back to the truck and then, back to the boat with his lunch. The Rabi was very impressed by the miracle he just witnessed but said nothing.

Thirty minutes later the preacher exclaimed, “I have run out of bait. I have more in the truck. I will be back.” The preacher then stood, walked on water to the truck and then, back to the boat. The Rabi now seeing two miracles straightened his back and replied, “I am a man of faith and have as much faith as you both.” He then stood up and took a step onto the water and disappeared from site.

The preacher then turned to the priest and said, “I guess he didn’t know where the rocks are.”

The moral of the story: Always know where the rocks are.

I hope you all enjoyed the story that was told to me when I was growing up. Remember! A donation of a Follow and a like works wonders. Thank you all for your support.
