The GRiM Clan is the second book in the sci-fi series A Saga of Dogs of War-A Story of Mercenaries.

In late 2236, the Expeditionary Force of the Dogs of War (DOW) Clan was ordered to claim all the land of Australia for the XTECH Corporation. After many large battles with the other Big Six Corporations that wanted the territory for themselves, DOW and XTECH were finally victorious. Now with all the other Corporations no longer contesting the claim of XTECH, Alice Springs Colony (ASC) was created. But XTECH was not going to be satisfied for just the continent of Australia. Their sights now were turning to what was known as South Asia, India and China, they were next on the list of to-dos of XTECH’s CEO Yosi Nagoochi and the new Territorial Governor Reggie Malone.

With XTECH’s need to continue their expansion on Earth the security of ASC was still in doubt. XTECH needed a Protective Force (PF) to keep the mining sites and the people of ASC secure from Mercenary Raiding Parties and the possibility of other Corporations trying to move in once DOW Hangar Ships had moved off of ASC.

Inside DOW, dissention was brewing. Some members of the Clan were not happy with their new mission to claim more Earth territory. They were growing weary of spending months on end in Hangar Ships. They wanted to settle down and put down some roots. When they learned of the need for a PF for ASC, members of the DOW Clan spilt from their old Clan to form The GRiM Clan. Follow Stone, Zhivago and the rest of the Clan in their adventures, discoveries and challenges that they faced as they fight to keep ASC out of the hands of their enemies to include large walking FISH.

Life Lesson #25

[image error]Library of Congress Aesop’s Fables

The Boys & the Frogs

Some Boys were playing one day at the edge of a pond in which lived a family of Frogs. The Boys amused themselves by throwing stones into the pond so as to make them skip on top of the water.

The stones were flying thick and fast and the Boys were enjoying themselves very much; but the poor Frogs in the pond were trembling with fear.

At last one of the Frogs, the oldest and bravest, put his head out of the water, and said, “Oh, please, dear children, stop your cruel play! Though it may be fun for you, it means death to us!

The Moral of the Story: Always stop to think whether your fun may not be the cause of another’s unhappiness. Bullying is bullying no matter to whom and to what intent. Think before you act.

The next Generation’s Science Fiction Readers, Young Women

Women and the Science Fiction Genre. The next generation’s readers

I started writing my science fiction series, A Saga of Dogs of War-A Story of Mercenaries, in the fall of 2019. Everything I read about writing a book always said you should write about what you know best, first. My first book’s theme was based on experiences as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam at the ripe old age of 19. To keep the experience of combat in the realm of fiction, I used my passion for Ray Bradbury and H.G. Wells to write in the science fiction genre. I also wanted to write my books in such a way to stay away from the horrors of war, but emphasis the honor of serving your country and the strong relationships developed in combat. That was the predominating theme in my first book Cry Havoc.

One day my daughter pointed out to me that there were no strong female roles in the book. She told me that if you want women to read my book you need strong women role models. Young women do not want to read the old James T. Kirk style science fiction books. The are looking for strong women role models in science fiction now.

So, with my daughter’s advice in mind, my next book in the series The GRiM Clan introduced two strong women, Carrie Malone and Madeline Nagoochi. These two characters, one a strong influencer in her family and the second a strong woman that rose up lead a large Corporation where the first strong women role models in the series.

In my third book The Vendetta Against Vendetta a third strong woman role model, Elizbeth Warren joined Carrie and Madeline. Elizabeth grew in the book to control another large corporation.

In my fourth book One’s Evil Desire Mia Osage a Kapacarian and Senior Coritha a Corilian joined as the next generation of strong women role models. Mia would be the first woman of the Confederation of Planets to head their new Military Intelligence Department and Senior Coritha one of the first women to achieve Senior (Captain) on a battle class Starship.

In my fifth, not yet released, book Frontier Space Chronicles, the strong women characters increase with the introduction of Senior Cynthia Stallone an Earthling commanding one of the biggest Starships ever built, the Explorer Class Starship, Captain Alala of the Amazon Warrior Class and last but not least Queen Adria, Queen of the Helenistic Kingdoms. As the number of my book list increases so does the number of strong women role models.

The one thing I do try to maintain in my strong women roles is to still keep them women and not try to make them men with the same physical strengths. I want to convey that while women are different in many ways, they have the same mental ability as those of men and that in many other ways women are even stronger than men.

This next generation of young women are seeing more and more strong women roles in science fiction movies which has seemed to draw their attention. If we are wanting these young women to join the readership of science fiction books, we need those strong women roles in our books.

My grandson, 13, reads my books and likes strong women roles as well. He says they remind him of his Grandmother and his Mom.

Life Lesson #24

The Young Crab & His Mother

“Why in the world do you walk sideways like that?” said a Mother Crab to her son. “You should always walk straight forward with your toes turned out.”

“Show me how to walk, mother dear,” answered the little Crab obediently, “I want to learn.”

So the old Crab tried and tried to walk straight forward. But she could walk sideways only, like her son. And when she wanted to turn her toes out she tripped and fell on her nose.

The Moral of the Story: Do not tell others how to act unless you can set a good example.

Isn’t that the Same Tree?

My Father told me a story that I wanted to tell my followers about. I think it relates to life in general and how we approach it.

My Father and my Great Grandfather had a passion for hunting. In the late 30″s early 40’s they would go on their hunting walks almost nightly. One night as they started their hunting walk, fog formed to a point to where they could hardly see three feet in front of them. There were no flashlights then so, with their lantern held high they tried to find their way. Soon they came upon an old Oak tree and sat for a while. Once Great Grandpa Webb thought he had his whit and was confident in their direction back to the house, they took off walking. But after 15 minutes of walking my Father Byron asked, “Grandpa isn’t that the same tree where we started from awhile back?”

Great Grandpa Webb looked at the tree and replied, “Well so it is. It looks like we have been walking one big circle back to the same spot where we started.” They did finally make it back to the house that night.

In life we find ourselves back at the same spot in life that we just left. It may take more than one time sitting under that big Oak Tree to get your bearings. On my Fathers foggy night with his grandfather his passion was to get back home. What is your passions? Where is your Oak Tree?

An Excerpt from Frontier Space Chronicles

[image error]Coming soon.

Stone then rose and went to find Mia. Once he reached the headquarters building, he was directed to an interview room were Mia was interviewing the Senior of the scientific vessel. Stone saw that the Senior was not being cooperative. As he sat down at the table in the middle of the room he said, “We just got approval from the top. If the Senior and his crew is not cooperative, we can start the executions tomorrow.”

The Senior then leaned forward with a defiant look and responded saying. “Your Confederation does not execute anyone.  Don’t try those scare tactics on me. You are a stupid race.”

Mia then grabbed him by the back of the neck pulling him close to her face and shouted, “We don’t have to. All we need to do is move you to Earth. They will have you convicted and executed within a week from your arrival. They have an express lane to their lethal injection tables. They will even have your execution on the news as their people watch you squirm and die.” Mia then took her other hand and put it in the face of the Senior and pushed him back into his chair.

Life Lesson #23

[image error]Library of Congress Aesop Fables

The Wolf & the Kid

There was once a little Kid whose growing horns made him think he was a grown-up Billy Goat and able to take care of himself. So one evening when the flock started home from the pasture and his mother called, the Kid paid no heed and kept right on nibbling the tender grass. A little later when he lifted his head, the flock was gone.

He was all alone. The sun was sinking. Long shadows came creeping over the ground. A chilly little wind came creeping with them making scary noises in the grass. The Kid shivered as he thought of the terrible Wolf. Then he started wildly over the field, bleating for his mother. But not half-way, near a clump of trees, there was the Wolf!

The Kid knew there was little hope for him.

“Please, Mr. Wolf,” he said trembling, “I know you are going to eat me. But first please pipe me a tune, for I want to dance and be merry as long as I can.”

The Wolf liked the idea of a little music before eating, so he struck up a merry tune and the Kid leaped and frisked gaily.

Meanwhile, the flock was moving slowly homeward. In the still evening air the Wolf’s piping carried far. The Shepherd Dogs pricked up their ears. They recognized the song the Wolf sings before a feast, and in a moment they were racing back to the pasture. The Wolf’s song ended suddenly, and as he ran, with the Dogs at his heels, he called himself a fool for turning piper to please a Kid, when he should have stuck to his butcher’s trade.

The Moral of the Story: Do not let anything turn you from your purpose

Superstitions

Friday the thirteenth, the number 13, Full Moons, blacks cats, and walking under ladders are all superstitions that have been observed over the centuries.

While there is no statistical data to support any additional emergency room or emergency calls increasing during Friday the Thirteenth or Full Moons, the fear seems to still exist. To further the fear factor there are many building that do not have a thirteenth floor. Think of this, a month consist of four weeks (28 days) and if there are 365 days in a year why don’t we 13 months in a year. Why do we only have twelve? Superstition perhaps?

Superstitions or Science Fiction, each are based in some truth. What bases your superstitions in truth.”

I am interested in hearing your superstitions and the truth they are based in. Leave me a comment. Remember, what is said in the comments stays in the comments.

Book #5

My Science Fiction book series A Saga of Dogs of War-A Story of Mercenaries fifth book Frontier Space Chronicles is now in editing and hopefully will be at book retailers before Christmas.

Frontier Space Chronicles

Frontier Space Chronicles is the fifth book in the Science Fiction series book by M. Short, A Saga of Dogs of War- A Story of Mercenaries.

In Frontier Space Chronicles we learn after the defeat of the Trajan and Cnut Empires, the formation of the United Nations consisting of the Confederation of Planets, and the Yana Tribe.

As the United Nations is forming on the old home world of the Cnut Empire, a plot is uncovered on Earth that affects two representatives to the House of Systems appointed by The Corporate Alliance and XTECH to undermine the Confederation of Planets by a yet another unknow adversary, but is it limited to only Earth and the Confederation of planets?

As the effort to find the new adversary continued, the United Nations set their sights on the commissioning 10 Explorer Class Starships to explore the unknown reaches of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Frontier Space Chronicles describes the stories of these Explorer Class Starship’s discoveries, adversities, trials of deep space exploration and to the ultimate discovery of the origins of Earth’s and the Kapacarian’s civilizations.

Who is the new adversary of the Confederation of Planets and ultimately the United Nations? Who was assassinated because of that adversarial confrontation? Is the Navi Nation still an enemy? What laid ahead in the exploration of the Milky Way? Who was murdered exploring the Galaxy? What led to the discoveries revealing Earth’s and Kapacarian’s origins of their civilizations?

The answer to all these questions can be found in “Frontier Space Chronicles”.
