There is such a mystery. i was chairperson of the English department at the university where I worked for thirty-seven years. After being a department chair for ten years, I decided to apply for a higher administrative position: Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. I had been given a green light from several persons that my application was on top, as it were. The day before my promotion was to be announced, and made official, i had been literally told that I had the job--no problem. The morning of my Great Day, I was told that the president of the university had decided not to fill the position. I was out. It was devastating. Why? What had happened? I found out later the president had met with someone, behind closed doors, someone close to me, a friend. And after that meeting, I was dropped from consideration. It took me a year to fully recover my sense of professional pride. I have always thought: this situation, my application, my expectation, my loss would make for a good novel. A whodunit and why? One, I begin writing, every morning, at four a.m. It's quiet. I keep the lights dim in the room where I write. This past winter I put in a fake fireplace with a little soundbox. It's goofy, I know, but it creates for me an ambiance that encourages writing. I'm in my own little world. I might add, the fireplace with its fake logs does put out heat. That's something! Back to writing. Getting up early is now a habit. I think I can count on one hand the number of mornings, I've missed. I never count words written. Never. I make it a point though to write at least one sentence.

And Two, I keep an ongoing folder for ideas. This folder has proven to be invaluable. I have everything from single sentence ideas and random thoughts to plot outlines for novels. I also store online articles that I feel are important to my writing, I even keep lists of words. I also keep in this folder "deleted" scenes from completed works. For instance, I deleted a whole chapter from GIRLS WHO DON'T BELIEVE and stored it in the folder because it's something that can possibly be expanded and molded into a separate novel. This folder keeps me confident. I have plenty of "works-in-progress" in there that will keep me busy for years--thus keeping "writer's block" at bay.(less)

“Books are a portable kind of time travel. We go back as well as forward when we read them. When we come back into the now, after being immersed in worlds previously unknown to us, we find ourselves, transformed. Touched by their magic, nothing we ever perceived beforehand remains quite the same.”

“So Big Bear dined with the Princess,
"Did you see him? You'd never have guessed!"
His party hat was like her crown,
and they talked until the sun went down.
