THe Eye Of Balor

The Eye of Balor’, tells the tale of an Irish giant, a prophecy, his captive daughter, some serious control issues, a late night rendezvous and a whole lot of famillicide!

According to Irish legend, a race of giants, the Fomorians, were said to be among the early settlers of Ireland. They even had their own king, Balor. Balor was no ordinary giant king, as he was also the god of death.

Balor would have been an unwelcome patient at an optometrist’s office. He only had one eye. Imagine the frustration of trying to fit a pair of glasses for him.

This would be the least of the eye doctor’s problems though, as whoever was caught in his gaze would die instantly.

$288
Shipping Included In US and Canada
Fortunately, giants weren’t big on seeing eye doctors.

And Balor kept his single eye closed until this terrible power was needed. Maybe he had a cool eye patch?

According to the prophecy, Balor would be killed by his own grandson, so what was a giant cyclops to do? Imprison his own daughter in a crystal tower of course! That way she can never have any babies and the prophecy would be thwarted.

It turns out, a crystal tower does not make a great prison.

Cian, a minor god was able to find a way into the tower and Balor’s daughter found her self with child not long after. Imagine getting pregnant with triplets from your first sexual experience? That is what happened to Balor’s daughter, Ethlinn. It seems she had terrible luck.

Rather than passing out cigars to celebrate the birth of his three grandsons, Balor threw them into the sea. But one boy, Lugh, was able to escape his watery grave by finding refuge with Manannan Mac Lir, the god of the sea. The prophecy finally played when Lugh led the Tuatha De Danann (a race of Irish gods) into a battle where Balor would meet his fate.

Death by removal of his one eye.

Vesta

I hold a flame inside my womb,
Electric, Cinnabar flight rouge,
Mercurial, gaseous blue
Where flowers may bloom;
I am the elements combined;
Fire in water, wind and time,
Earth in human, all entwined,
I am the blaze that never burns,
I am the unseen hand that turns,
Where I dwell; hold; keep; sojourn;
You will know this space as home.

Livin’ The Hygge Life

It is -26C this morning

and it has me thinking of how lovely it is to be NOT outside.

Indeed, there is nothing quite like being inside when the outside temperature drops, and sitting next to the fire with my morning coffee and Chairman Meow on my lap (admittedly making this difficult to type).

I am grateful to have a home to be warm in, coffee to drink, and a cuddly kitty with whom I can write.

“Hygge is about having less, enjoying more; the pleasure of simply being. It is generous and celebratory, a way to remember the importance of the simple act of living itself.”

– Louisa Thomsen Brits, “…how a familiar room slowly changes colour as morning arrives.” More raku vases here“He didn’t remember, he didn’t worry, he just was. – Tove Jansson I hope you are also enjoying
simple moments today

What do you like to do to bring hygge to your life?

This Magic Girdle Will Leave You Breathless. Here’s The Skinny.

This ain’t your average ad for a girdle

But in case you came for a ‘hot pic’, please see below:

The raku process. Sometimes too hot to handle.

Princess Admete wanted it, Hercules laboured for it, and Hippolyta almost never took it off. This vase story tells the tale of an ill thought out gift, Hercules charms, early woman’s liberation, and a wedding.

The cause of all of this?

A magic girdle.

Most people would not even consider a girdle as a gift for their daughter, particularly if you are the father. At best, it’s creepy and a little insulting, at worst it’s a great way to let your patriarchy flag fly. I think Hippolyta’s father Ares could have benefited from the help of a personal shopper.

Ares gifted his daughter this ‘magic girdle’ as a symbol of her ‘dignity’, which is really ancientspeak for virginity. Not cool dad!

Perhaps Ares could have appreciated some Spanx!

‘Phew, now I don’t have to suck in my stomach’

Needless to say for someone’s whose name means ‘let loose,’ a girdle was not a great fit. I am sure she was waiting for just the right bra burning-esque moment to liberate herself.

Raku Vase – Hippolyta’s Girdle

That moment would come when news of a visitor started spreading around the Amazon kingdom. He was handsome, he was a hero, he was Hercules, heartthrob of the ancient world. It wasn’t too often that such an eligible bachelor was so close.

Hippolyta decided to visit Hercules on his boat. She was so impressed by him that she gave him her ‘magic girdle’. It just so happened that retrieving it was his ninth labour. This was very convenient for Hippolyta, because she finally got to take off that allegedly magical, constricting girdle.

This is where the real magic began. Hercules, in a good mood because he thought his David Lee Roth like charm won the day, introduced her to his friend Theseus. The two fell in love and would be later married.

Maybe that’s the magic of the girdle.

The only way to find true love in yourself and others is to take the thing off – If you want to.

So, what do you think of this story and vase?
