| Such a compelling novel! Though it is the conflicted, gifted Susanna who is left a Bach cantata manuscript in the composer's hand by her beloved grandfather and must trace its provenance, it is the manuscript itself that is the novel's real troubled ...more | |

| THE LIE is my first book by this author who I find brilliant, but I think this book may be one of her more difficult. We are most of the time in the mind of the shell-shocked WWI veteran soldier Daniel who returns to his area in Cornwall in 1920, una ...more | |

“Sometimes he dreamt he held her; that he would turn in bed and she would be there. But she was gone and he was old. Nearly seventy. Only cool paint met his fingers. “Ma très chère . . .” Darkness started to fall, dimming the paintings. He felt the crumpled letter in his pocket. “I loved you so,” he said. “I never would have had it turn out as it did. You were with all of us when we began, you gave us courage. These gardens at Giverny are for you but I’m old and you’re forever young and will never see them. . . .”

“Dull late-afternoon light glittered on the hanging copper pots in the kitchen where the old painter sat with his wine, smoking cigarette, a letter angrily crumpled on the table in front of him.”

“England was alive, throbbing through all her estuaries, crying for joy through the mouths of all her gulls, and the north wind, with contrary motion, blew stronger against her rising seas. What did it mean? For what end are her fair complexities, her changes of soil, her sinuous coast? Does she belong to those who have moulded her and made her feared by other lands, or to those who have added nothing to her power, but have somehow seen her, seen the whole island at once, lying as a jewel in a silver sea, sailing as a ship of souls, with all the brave world's fleet accompanying her towards eternity?”

I didn't do much writing. Mostly I was a hanger on of Katherine Kirkpatrick and had worked at Henry Holt with her. -Clarissa
I think I recall now. Did you come to New York and we met? I am beginning to bring up some particulars from my mind! If you'd tell me about your writing again, it will all come back.Stephanie
