Lauren Belfer’s most recent novel, AND AFTER THE FIRE, received the inaugural Book Club Award of the 2016 National Jewish Book Awards.

Lauren grew up in Buffalo, New York, and decided to become a writer when she was six years old. By the time she was in high school, her literary work was receiving rejection letters from all the best publications. Some of these letters included the initials of the person doing the rejecting, which she interpreted as encouragement. After graduating from Swarthmore College with a B.A. in Medieval Studies and Art History, she worked as a file clerk at an art gallery, a paralegal at a law firm, an assistant photo editor at a newspaper, a fact checker at magazines, and as a researcher and associate producer on doc

Hi, Sharon. Thank you, so much, for writing to me! And thank you for your kind words. Readers like you make the long writing process worthwhile.

I grew up in Buffalo during an era of economic depression, when no one talked about the city's illustrious past. Like most of my friends, I left the city when I went to college, and I didn't return to live there afterward, because of the high unemployment rate. One day, years later, I happened to be in Buffalo to visit my parents. I wandered into an exhibition at the Historical Society focused on the city in 1901, when Buffalo was a place of immense prosperity and a center of both industry and the arts. What I saw that day transformed my view of my hometown. After I saw the exhibit, I went for a walk in nearby Delaware Park, and the idea suddenly came to me, that I should write a book about my hometown in its glory days. This was the beginning of the novel that became CITY OF LIGHT. I called the book CITY OF LIGHT because that's what Buffalo was called in 1901, its streets and homes lit by electricity from Niagara Falls.

Thank you again for being in touch.
With all best wishes,
Lauren

An aspiring fiction writer needs to read constantly; practice the craft of writing consistently; revise continually; and observe the world closely.

Above all, a fiction writer needs persistence in the face of rejection.

The first short story of mine to be published was rejected forty-two times before it found an editor who loved it. (This was in the days before self-publishing.) When I received that first acceptance letter, after so many rejections, I felt like saying to the editor, "Wait, forty-two of your fellow editors hated this. Are you certain you want to publish it?" Somehow I managed to hold myself back from challenging him. The second short story of mine to be published was rejected only twenty-seven times, and I considered that a breakthrough. (less)

“IN SHAME AND SORROW CHRISTIANS KEEP IN MEMORY THE JEWISH CITIZENS OF THIS CITY. IN 1933, 4675 JEWS LIVED IN DRESDEN. IN 1945 IT WAS 70. WE WERE SILENT AS THEIR HOUSES OF WORSHIP BLAZED . . . WE DID NOT RECOGNIZE THEM AS OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS. WE ASK FOR FORGIVENESS.”

“In those days, Buffalo was flush in an era of extraordinary economic prosperity and civic optimism. The city had become the most important inland port in America because of its pivotal location at the eastern end of the Great Lakes. Indeed, at the turn of our century, Buffalo had taken its place among the great cities of the United States.”

“the Nazis’ so-called euthanasia program, the widespread murder of the disabled. As a result, the program had been curtailed. The overwhelming majority of church leaders had said nothing, however, to help their Jewish neighbors. This”
