Which of the Three Kinds of Meditation Is Right for You?

[Photo by Prostock-studio via Envato Elements]
Nowadays, the benefits of meditation have become well-known. We do it for stress relief, better focus, or simply for clarity and calm. These benefits become magnified when we engage in meditation with a clear goal and intention. And once we know our goal, we can determine the type of meditation that would serve it best. We can divide meditation into three types based on our goal. These types are progressive stages not only defined by the purposes they serve, but also the depth of the meditation.
Health meditationFunctional meditationEnlightenment meditation1. Health MeditationPurpose: Improve health
When you mention “meditation,” people often only think of sitting with their eyes closed. But all we do in our lives, such as, laughing, walking, breathing, or praising others, is all meditation. There is not a thing we do that is not meditation, because meditation is a technique for using the mind. Putting our minds into our lives whether we’re sitting still or moving—in other words, becoming more mindful—is meditation. This can all be included in the category of health meditation.
As the first stage of meditative practice, health meditation does not involve entering a very deep state of consciousness. In such a state, brain waves slow to a theta level. For health meditation, though, it’s enough if they slow from the beta frequency of our active minds to an alpha frequency. This causes our consciousness to sink from the neocortex, or outer layers of our brain, to the paleocortex further in the center of our brain.
As that happens, we enter a state of emotional control and feel a sense of great peace. Even that is enough to make us feel very comfortable, to help us recover from fatigue, digest better, release stress, increase our immunity, and improve our health overall.
When we learn to control ourselves through health meditation, we can use that control to meditate in earnest and engage in functional meditation.
2. Functional MeditationPurpose: Improve brain functions like concentration and creativity and changing habits
Once we learn to control our thoughts and emotions through health meditation, next, we can do functional meditation. Functional meditative methods are about developing the power of the brain. We use the magic of imagination to increase our creativity and concentration. In such a meditative state, we can forget our age and gender and let go of our present situation or anxieties. Just as we can freely switch back and forth between gears in our cars, we can freely shift our consciousness with our imagination; this is a way to make good use of our brain.
Students do it to increase their learning ability, and some people use it to stop or change bad habits. For example, people who want to quit smoking can actually stop if, through meditation, they encourage their brain by continuously visualizing themselves having quit smoking.
This type of visualization goes deeper than changing the thoughts floating in our paleocortex. Habits are embedded in the neural networks of our subconscious, deep in the paleocortex, almost at the entrance to the brain stem. So there are limits to extracting that information using only the thought of the neocortex. That’s why, even after we say that we’ve resolved to change, we go back to our old habits in a few days.
Information in the paleocortex is not moved by information in the neocortex. We have to bring our awareness deep into the paleocortex through meditation and strongly resolve, “I will stop smoking.” It’s like inputting information into a computer.
If we do that, then, for a while, the old information and newly input information battle it out. At that point, we have to continually talk to our paleocortex about what harm will come to us unless we quit smoking. When such information gets in, the bad information that was there before loses its power and jumps out. Without even realizing it, we start to hate even looking at tobacco.
This is controlling and recreating ourselves through functional meditation, the second kind of meditation.
3. Enlightenment MeditationPurpose: Great awakening
Enlightenment meditation is the highest level of meditation. At the heart of it is discovering who we really are at our core.
When we meditate deeply, going past an alpha state and into a slower theta frequency, our emotions disappear like clouds scattering and vanishing. We enter into a “no self” state, or what is also called the zero point. From this clear, emotion-free state beyond our bodies or our egos, if we go in even deeper, we attain a state of a new awakening. Then, we have a realization concerning who we are and a connection to all that is.
Practicing health meditation can be done throughout every day of our lives. With more concerted practice, we learn to quiet our thoughts and emotions to do functional meditation regularly. We actively change our habits and exercise our imagination to become more creative. By becoming proficient in health meditation and functional meditation, our brain becomes trained enough to go deeper, into enlightenment meditation, to experience the nature of all life.

[Video] The Human Body and the Five Elements
There are two main energy theories that have been passed down from long ago. One of them is that all matter is composed of five elements: water, fire, wood, earth, and metal. Even the days of the week correspond to five elements, plus Sunday is the day of the sun and Monday is the day of the moon. Different parts of the body also correspond to different elements.
Understanding these elements helps us keep our energy, body, and mind healthy and balanced.
In this video, I give you some examples of how the five elements appear in our lives.

Take Your Spiritual Vitamins to Renew Your Mind and Spirit

Just as it’s important to make sure we have enough physical vitamins for our body, we need a regular dose of spiritual vitamins for our minds and spirit in order to be healthy and whole.
We all know how necessary vitamins are for our body. They are part of the building blocks our body uses to regenerate and make what it needs.
But if you think about it, just a few hundred years ago, people didn’t know vitamins existed. Because they didn’t know about them, they couldn’t use them or make sure they had enough of them.
Just as people didn’t know about vitamins for the body at one point, many people today don’t know about what I call “spiritual vitamins.” A spiritual vitamin imbues our mind and spirit with vitality. Our spirits change immediately when we take one. Making sure we have enough spiritual vitamins is as important as our spirits are to our lives.
What Are Spiritual Vitamins?
A Sacred Geometric Representation of the LifeParticle Sun
LifeParticles from the LifeParticle Sun, what I call the Source of all life, can be used as spiritual vitamins. The LifeParticle Sun is the clear, bright consciousness that can illuminate people’s minds. It emits the purest, brightest energy unified with matter. LifeParticles are the building blocks of all we see and can’t see.
We don’t need a prescription or to go to a store to get LifeParticles. We don’t even need to pray for them. They are everywhere; they’re who we are. Even if we didn’t know about them, they have always been there. And once we realize they exist, we can use them for our spiritual and mental well-being.
The key is that LifeParticles can be moved with our minds. And they can move our minds. LifeParticles from the LifeParticle Sun can be used to open our inner eye, our third eye, which allows us to see and feel them using our sixth sense—our ability to sense energy. Therefore we can use them to straighten out our minds and align our spirit with the LifeParticle Sun.
So whenever we need more brightness, energy, and positivity, we can call in LifeParticles. These spiritual vitamins give us hope and strength, clarity and calm.
How to Take Your Spiritual VitaminsHow often should we take our spiritual vitamins? Every day, just like our physical ones. With regular doses of spiritual vitamins, we can consistently renew and revive our spirit. Then we’ll have the energy and motivation to be in tune with our highest selves and with the harmony of nature.
All we need for taking spiritual vitamins is our imagination.
You can visualize golden particles of light in your mind.See them come in through the very top of your head. They illuminate your entire brain, come down your neck, and fill up your whole body.Picture them going into cells and in between cells, clearing up imbalances and dysfunctions. They travel through your blood, your lymph vessels, and your energy channels.Everything gets renewed by the light of these LifeParticles. If there is something you’re having trouble with, you can direct the LifeParticles to that part of your body or brain and imagine them helping that part. Or you could visualize sending them to a situation in your life. As you send them there, see that part of your life improving and being illuminated.
To help you focus on this meditation, you can calm your mind beforehand with some gentle stretching, Brain Wave Vibration, or abdominal breathing.
After taking your spiritual vitamins, you may feel more positive and hopeful, fortified against the darkness in your life.

Ilchi Lee’s Two Essential Ways to Deal with Anxiety
How can we handle anxiety? Remember we are not alone and stay awake.
When we feel anxious about something, everything is heightened. Adrenaline is coursing through us, and we’re on alert. All our experiences seem to have more gravity. We may feel a low level, ongoing anxiety, or the present moment may seem like the end of the world.
Such times can be difficult to deal with, and they may make us feel alone. If you are going through this, I’d like to offer this consolation that I’ve learned from my own life: you are not alone. Everyone experiences anxiety from time to time, regardless of their circumstances. Rich or poor, tall or short, brilliant or average, we all go through anxious times. There is an old saying that goes, “Even inside of a flowered palanquin, there are anxieties.” That means that even if it looks like we have everything going for us, we can still have anxiety.
Although being in a very good environment doesn’t save us from anxiety, it also means we can deal with our anxiety despite any circumstances we find ourselves in. Anxiety is created inside of us, so we can handle anxiety by changing what’s going on inside.
How to Approach AnxietyHow can we do that? There are actually two ways. We either have to be in totally deep sleep or be totally awake.
There are two essential ways to approach anxiety. You can either be totally asleep or totally awake.
Click To Tweet
Sleeping through life lets us avoid many unpleasant feelings, because we are so far removed from what’s going on inside us. We only pay attention to what’s going on outside and/or we keep running, keeping busy, so we never stop to feel anything. We may also remain unaware by self-medicating ourselves with whatever we find pleasurable. We chase after the next new, exciting product or experience. Underneath it all, we may be anxious, but we manage to avoid dealing with it.
Unfortunately, whatever we have inside festers if we live this way. One day, it will make itself seen and heard, and we may find ourselves overwhelmed by the consequences and blindsided by things we can’t understand.
Fortunately, there is another way to deal with anxiety. Instead of sleeping, we can be totally awake. We can only be completely awake, however, if we know why we exist in this world and what we have to do in it. In essence, only a person who has found their purpose can be completely awake. For it is this purpose that keeps you awake. It gives you a reason to know what is going on inside you and how to manage it. And by managing it, you can prevent anxiety and other emotions from taking over.
When you don’t have a purpose to focus on, unnecessary thoughts crowd in, and emotions, preconceptions, and victim consciousness grow bigger. Those unnecessary thoughts are like ghosts. The purpose of ghosts is fracturing balance and division. They use all their power to break up the balance of body, mind, and brain, and to cause division between people’s hearts.
These thought ghosts can be called the cause of anxiety. They cause so much disruption to our inner balance that we can hardly see or feel our internal peace and wisdom. They make the future look grim, our abilities seem inadequate, and our differences from others appear insurmountable. In other words, these ghosts steal our hope.
Focusing on a purpose that holds our attention, that naturally brings us joy, puts those ghosts in their place. They lose power as we give energy to the thoughts, emotions, and actions that align with our purpose. Instead, our inner peace and joy grow, leaving little room for the turbulence of anxiety.
Find Your PurposeWhat I call a “purpose” can be as vast as the universe or as small as a single particle. Whatever we determine our purpose to be, the main requirement is that it makes our energy and consciousness grow. It allows us to be bigger, bolder, and brighter the more we work on it.
How can you discover your purpose if you don’t know it already? Keep asking yourself.
Our brains supply the answers we need. We can hear it directly inside of us if we listen carefully. Our heart will leap at the prospect as soon as we’re aware of it, and our fear will immediately be activated as we realize everything achieving our purpose will entail.
But if we stay awake and strive toward the completion of our purpose, peace and joy, vitality and life, will dominate the fear and anxiety everyone eventually faces.

Having a bright spirit inoculates us against the most serious viruses and diseases—fear, anxiety, greed, selfishness—diseases that could destroy life. Making our spirits bright can be as simple as making Water Up, Fire Down energy flow inside.
Since I’ve returned to Sedona, Arizona recently, I’ve been living a masked-up life that’s completely different from the relative freedom I had on the farm in New Zealand, where I spent last year. Although there’s a lot that’s uncomfortable about wearing a mask, on the other hand, it makes me feel the preciousness of the air and breath that I’d felt and breathed. Through this experience, I also heard the message of wisdom given by the COVID-19 situation.
This message told me to mask up against a different type of “virus” that’s just as invisible yet whose effects can be seen throughout society. It’s the virus of fear and anxiety, which makes us sick with selfish desires, boundless greed, and limiting preconceptions. When this illness runs rampant, our society starts to be destroyed from the inside out.
The mask we need against this existential virus is to brighten our spirit—the part of ourselves that transcends our small egoic selves. That spirit can be overrun by our fears and anxieties, or it can shine so brightly that those insecurities are overshadowed. Then they no longer dominate our thoughts, words, and actions.
Such a bright spirit is more than just a mask, however. It’s like a strong immune system that clears up any uprising of fear or anxiety before it can make us sick. People with such a healthy spirit naturally desire to take the time to listen to others with respect and communicate with love and compassion. They want to help others and live in peaceful coexistence with themselves, other beings, and the planet.
Start with OurselvesAs this pandemic has shown us, social systems and structures are not adequate to help us brighten our spirit. We can only strengthen our own immunity while acting as a model for others.
Doing this may seem complicated, but I like to make things simple. We just need to have “Water Up, Fire Down.”
To brighten our spirit, we need to have Water Up, Fire Down energy circulation in our body.

Water Up, Fire Down is a basic principle of energy flow in the body. When our bodies and brains are healthy, warm “fire” energy flows down the front of our body to the energy center in our abdomen and cool “water” energy flows up our back to the energy center in our brain. With Water Up, Fire Down, we keep a cool head and a fire in our belly so we can make clear decisions, stay calm in stressful situations, and have passion and action power. Maintaining this energy flow maintains our physical health, emotional balance, positive mentality, and creativity. But more than that, it brightens our spirit.

How to Make Water Up, Fire DownTo have Water Up, Fire Down, keep the pathway of energy flow clear and strengthen the energy center in the lower abdomen, which acts as a furnace that powers the system. Just like all other aspects of our health, this energy circuit needs daily maintenance. Just as we wash the surface of our body, we clean out the emotional and mental debris that clogs up our energy circuit. Just as we feed our bodies regularly, we fill up our energy center with energy.
Also like with our physical health, we can take preventive measures to keep a Water Up, Fire Down energy state. Having positive rather than negative interactions with others—acting with understanding, acceptance, and forgiveness—keeps emotional wounds from blocking energy flow. They also open our hearts, the source of fire energy, which feeds the flow of energy. Doing work that excites us and brings us joy also opens our hearts and supports Water Up, Fire Down.
Our physical condition also affects our energy flow. Having a good posture with the spine straight lets energy circulate more easily. Stretching open the chest and relaxing the shoulders also allows energy to pass through those areas. A soft, relaxed abdomen enables energy to pool there.
Most of the exercises I’ve shared throughout my 40-year career help you have Water Up, Fire Down. Video routines of some of them are available to watch when you sign up for my weekly newsletter.
If we keep refreshing our Water Up, Fire Down energy flow at least once a day, then we may find our spirit reviving and our hope for ourselves, for the future, and for humankind becoming bright.

[Video] Meet the Creator Inside You
In 2004, I gave a lecture at Sedona Mago Center in Sedona, Arizona for a youth conference titled Peace in the Brain. In this lecture, I encouraged my listeners to find the creator within them. Each of us has an original and bright self, who is the creator, inside us. Finding our own self is one of the most important things we can do in life to lead us to the completion of our goals.
