Begum Akhtar: The Malika-E-Ghazal Of India
Begum Akhtar may have died almost six decades ago, but her music lives in the hearts of music lovers. Music does not know any language or cultural barriers, and Begum Akhtar was one of the first women singers in the country to break the many (barriers) which restricted the creative talent of women. She was born in the pre-independence India so she had to face a lot more restraint and struggle than most women of today. That she became such a top-notch singer and artist, during such an era is an achievement in itself.
Today, let’s get to know how, why and when she reached where she did in her life. Her illustrious and long-spanning career as a singer started when she was just 15 years old. This and some more little known facts will be revealed in this Begum Akhtar special story. So, let’s delve in.
1. Breaking stereotypes
She was among the very first and early female singers who gave public concerts. This led to breaking away from the age-old singing in mehfils or private gatherings. This feat also earned her the title of Mallika-E-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazal). She is still one of the earliest queens of the melodious world of Ghazals.

2. A Multi-faceted Singer
Not just Ghazals, but Begum Akhtar was was a well-known Indian singer of Dadra and Thumri genres of Hindustani classical music. It won’t be wrong to say that she was nothing sort of a genius when it was about singing.

3. Singer-Cum-Actor
Begum Akhtar’s melodious voice combined with her good looks, made her a perfect choice for a film actress. She did quite a few films in her early years. A few of these included Ek Din Ka Badshah, Nal Damayanti, Roti, and Jalsaghar.

4. Marital Life
She got married to Ishtiaq Ahmed Abbasi, a Lucknow-based barrister, in 1945. It was after her marriage that she came to be known as Begum Akhtar. She was known by her birth name, Akhtaribai Faizabadi, till then. Post her marriage, owing to the restrictions from her husband, she stopped signing for almost five years. She subsequently fell ill and returned to the recording studios in 1949 when her return to music was prescribed as a befitting remedy. She even returned to singing in concerts, which she continued to do unto death.

5. Illustrious Career
Her first performance was at the age of fifteen and she was 60 when she gave her last performance. In her 45 years of singing career, she has nearly four hundred songs to her credit. Her most notable works include Hamen Yaad Teri Sataane Lagi, Hamen dil mein basaa bhi lo and the timeless Bengali classical song Jochona Koreche Aari.
6. Awards, Accolades, and Recognition
She got awarded with the Padma Shri in 1968, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1972 and the Padma Bhushan (posthumously) in 1975. She was one of the most celebrated singers in India. If you are interested in knowing about some of the renowned international female singers then this story will interest you.

7. Demise
She raised the pitch of her voice while performing at a concert in Balaramapuram near Thiruvananthapuram. The resulting stress from this led to her falling ill and she was rushed to the nearest hospital. She passed away on 30 October 1974. She was buried next to her mother’s grave in Lucknow. The marble graves were restored in 2012, along with their pietra dura style marble inlay. Her home, which was built in 1936 in China Bazaar, Lucknow is being converted into a museum.
For a woman who lived during that era, Begum Akhtar surely gave us a lot to take inspiration from. Which of her songs is closest to your heart? Let us know in the comments below.

Sunrise, Sunset And Closeness To Nature @ Anchaviyo
We were looking for a place to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and had almost settled on a resort in Goa when we chanced upon this resort. One look at their igloo room and we were both sold; we made our reservations the very next day. The river front location, vast expanse of greenery and the variety of rooms the resort provides, are all major USPs of the resort. So, if you’re looking for some quiet time away from the city, and yet not too far away, this is your go-to. However, some drawbacks include a little laidback and arrogant attitude of all their staff (we had to make a few calls everytime for them to clear the dishes after our meals and I also wanted to plan a lil midnight surprise for our anniversary but it didn’t work out because they were unwilling to make a few arrangements) and also, the rooms are quite pricey, so be ready to shell out major bucks. Despite all that, we did have a great time, enjoying the scenic sunrise/sunset from our Igloo room on our first day and from the yoga deck the next day. (We stayed for two nights and the second day we stayed in the Traveler’s cabin). Also, they only serve vegetarian food, so that’s another minus for the non-vegetarians. But whatever food we had, it was lip-smacking so you can definitely let go of your non-vegetarian diet for one or two days. They also set up the room and the bathtub with flowers, bubbles, candles and balloons for our midnight anniversary celebrations, and they do that (on request) for every guest. In the end, besides some hitches, it turned out to be quite a memorable experience. So, I’d recommend giving it a try !
Pro-tip : Planning a group outing at the resort would be a great idea because they have some very beautiful rooms for groups of 5 to 8 people. That way, your per head cost becomes lesser too. Also, their poolside swings are simply amazing, so have at least one of your meals there.
P. S : This photo is taken from their yoga deck right after the sunrise.

Daily Dose of Weird! Doing These Things Publicly In India Can Get You Fined
The list of things for which you could be fined are many. These vary from place to place across the world. While some countries are open about their PDA, there are a few where showing affection in public, could land you in jail. If that seems weird to you, the things for which you cannot be fined are even more absurd. Ours is a culturally rich, and sometimes rigid country. Our beliefs in certain things are so deep-rooted that we forgot to change the values with the changing times.
Hence, even as the world has altered its way of looking at mostly everything, some things for which you could be fined in our country, remain the same because most of us are not aware whether they are legal or not. Here is a look at few such things.
1. Playing loud Music
There are provisions for regulating and controlling noise pollution resulting from loudspeakers, public address systems and also through construction activity. So next time you are disturbed by your neighbor’s loud music or anything else, remember that you can complain about it.

2. PDA
Section 294 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) states that, an “obscene act and songs… to the annoyance of others” may lead to a fine and/or an imprisonment of up to three months. But, the “obscene acts” under the section have not been clearly defined.
[image error]source: The Hindu
3. Traffic Rules
Did you know that the traffic rules do not apply to hand-pulled rickshaws or cyclists? Next time you see them not following a traffic signal, remember that they aren’t legally wrong. In yet another one of unknown and weird laws, you cannot be fined for the same traffic rule broken, more than once in twenty hours.

4. Rules for Live-in and Unmarried Couples
Most of us are of the impression that it is illegal for unmarried couples to book/stay in a hotel room together. However, this is not the case. So is the case with unmarried couples living-in together. Yes, it is frowned upon in our society but is in no way breaking any law.

5. Smoking
Many of us are aware of this thanks to the ads before movies in theaters. However, not many actually know that it is true. Yes, its illegal to smoke in confined public spaces.

6. Littering
Something we all take for granted is throwing rubbish, anywhere and everywhere. Though not executed or followed seriously, littering is actually a punishable offense.

7. Racist and Communist Remarks
Calling a North-east Indian ‘Chinky’ may be funny, but it is also a punishable offense. The laws of hate speech state that using derogatory names for communities like the scheduled castes, north-eastern communities etc. can be fined or even lead to jail time.

8. Unreported is Offensive
An act made way back in 1878 is still governing us. As per the Treasure Trove Act (1878) if you don’t report more than 10 rupees lying around (which is unclaimed) you are committing a crime.
10. Prostitution vs Pimping
Prostitution thrives in India despite the notion that it’s illegal. Do know you why? Because it’s not actually a crime to pay someone for sex. However, approaching a pimp or pimping someone out for sex is illegal.

These things really make us believe in the ‘It happens only in India’ phrase. Do you know any other such weird laws that exist in our country? Let us know in the comments.

Hindi Movies That Beautifully Depicted Lesbianism, And Broke Stereotypical Barriers
Hindi movies on homosexuality has become a hot topic of discussion ever since the latest realease Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga came out. Though the trailer doesn’t outright proclaim that the protagonist is lesbian, the subtle hints about her secret, point towards same-sex love. After the SC verdict on decriminalization homosexuality, there was rejoice all around in the country. Though this new movie seems like a big step, there are other movies in Bollywood that have executed the subject of lesbianism beautifully.
Some Hindi movies on homosexuality come to mind straight away. However, there are a few which many may not know about. For cinephiles, such plot lines and stories are just another excuse to appreciate good cinema, and for others, it may be finally something to relate to. Here’s a look at such Hindi movies on homosexuality, specifically on lesbianism.
1. Girlfriend
Though not great on the content, story and even the plot line, the movie did talk about lesbianism between the two lead female protagonists. Often seen as an erotic movie, the one thing that it did was give a voice to love between two females.

2. Fire
Surprisingly, with an ‘A’ certificate approval from the then Censor Board, this movie ran in theaters without any cuts for 3 weeks. That was enough to create waves across the country. Though the movie was soon brought down from the screens and even banned, it still remains one of the best Hindi movies on homosexuality.
3. Parched
Though not entirely a lesbian movie, we do see intimacy between Radhika Apte and Tannishtha Chatterjee in one scene. However, this is a film that has female protagonists and worth a watch.
3. Margarita With A Straw
This movie showed a differently-abled woman as being bisexual. When we weren’t and aren’t able to accept homosexuality and bisexuality in even abled citizens, Kalki dared to portray an autistic bisexual woman, and that too quite convincingly.
4. Dedh Ishqiya
It was very subtly put, but there were some who did identify more than just friendship between lead female characters of Begum Para and Munniya.
5. Heroine
For the first time, an A-Lister like Kareena Kapoor Khan was subtly shown as a bisexual woman in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. The way it was handled wasn’t great, but it was there to identify and address.

Which one of these Hindi movies on homosexuality have you watched already and which one are you planning to watch now? Do you know any such other movies we may have missed out on the list? Let us know in the comments!
