A Ferry Ride To A Fairytale Type Island & Fort
We were visiting Murud for a weekend getaway when we thought of visiting some local attractions besides just the walk-across-the-road beach from our resort.
When in this beach town, one of the top places and a must-visit is the Murud-Janjira fort. Why so? Firstly, take a look at it!
That’s how it looked from our car as we drove towards it and we were immediately enticed. As can be made out, one cannot drive to the fort as it is an island fort of sorts. So, visitors can gain access to the Janjira fort from Rajapuri (a small village on the coast) and after a short ride in a small boat, one can enter the fort through the main entrance.
The boat ride in itself is quite an exciting experience, but the main attraction is of course what awaits inside the fort building.
Currently under protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), this fort, which was built way back at the end of the 17th century, is surprisingly still beautifully intact.
The Janjira fort is considered one of the strongest marine forts in India.
A special attraction of this fort are 3 gigantic cannons named Kalalbangdi, Chavri and Landa Kasam. These cannons were said to be feared for their shooting range.
Another gate to the west is sea-facing, called ‘Darya Darwaza’ which opens directly into the sea.
The fort has 26 rounded bastions, still intact. Though the fort is no longer in use and now mostly lays in ruins, in its heyday it was a full-fledged living fort with all the necessary facilities within the premises of the fort-wall itself. These facilities included palaces, quarters for officers, a mosques, houses for common folk and two small natural fresh water lakes (one of which still has fresh water storage)
The fort is oval in shape, as opposed to the usual oblong or square shape of such forts. The wall of this fort is about 40 feet high and it has rounded arches (some of which still have cannons mounted on them)
Besides the rich history, what we enjoyed most was the view and of course, the winds. Despite it being afternoon time and the sun shinning brightly above our heads, we didn’t feel hot!
If in Murud, or even in the nearby popular beach towns of Alibag and Dapoli, do give this architectural marvel a visit.
Pro-tip: Go during morning time, preferably before lunch, as the fort would be less crowded and you’ll get a comparatively empty ferry ride too.

Living in A Bird’s Nest Amidst Nature’s Lap @ The Herb Farm
“My wish is to stay always like this, living quietly
in a corner of nature.”
That’s the quote that came to my mind when I first saw photos of The Herb Farm for our annual family trip and outing. We had decided on our destination to be Igatpuri, but were still to finalize on a resort to put up at, when we came across The Herb Farm. Their tree top cum cottage type rooms, all providing a lake view, immediately appealed to the nature lover in me.
Reaching there (from Mumbai) isn’t very cumbersome if you follow the Google Maps route. However, do keep in mind that you’ll have to make a u-turn because it’s on the opposite side of the route if you’re travelling from Mumbai (you will need to take a U-turn and travel 500 meters towards Ghoti).
The resort doesn’t have parking space inside its premises and you’ll be asked to park on the highway, outside the resort entry gate. However, this is hardly anything to worry about because its quite safe with a dedicated security person guarding the guests’ cars. We were given welcome drinks on our entry and then were immediately escorted to our two rooms (we were five of us). Once we crossed the reception, the dining space and the swimming pool area (which is also quite well-maintained and appealing)
we came across the eight cottages which had caught my attention and my heart right away through their pictures, and I melted at their real sight too. The tree house type rooms need to reached by taking a flight of stairs.
The room has an outside seating area, with two chairs and a small table, from where you can enjoy the sunrise/sunset or anytime of the day to enjoy the view of the water body located right opposite the entire property.
At the bottom part of each tree house cum cottage, right next to the stairs, is a hammock swing. The bibliophile in me wanted to just lie there and read away books all day!
Inside the room, there’s a comfy double bed, a study table, a TV and a cupboard. My favourite part though was the goodie basket which welcomed us with a personal message.
Oh! and the bathroom is just straight out of a rural dream, with a glass roof , giving you the feeling of bathing below the open skies and the beauty of nature surrounding you.
It gets quite chilly after sunset. However, to help cope with that, at night, they put up a bonfire in front of each cottage, where you can warm up in front of the fire, chit chatting with friends and family and relaxing on your getaway.
Their dining area is a two-level restaurant (room tariff is inclusive of unlimited buffet breakfast), and the top level gives a great panoramic view of the entire lake from each table, especially those near the railing.
The food options are quite less (if ordering the food; there are plenty options in their buffet breakfast), and the taste is quite average. However, their view and their rooms more than make up for this.
The common area outside the rooms has an area with lounge chairs, where you can put up your feet, stretch away lazily and enjoy the frontal view of the lake. You can even enjoy board games like carrom and a few other outdoor sports like badminton.
They also provide bikes/bicycles with each room which you can use (at no extra cost) to ride around their property. My favorite part of the common area though, was the bench at the end of the resorts. Why so? See the pictures for yourself!
There’s a back gate next to this bench which takes you to the lake front. I recommend taking a morning walk here or just sitting at this bench soaking in nature and observing the sun come up.
We loved our stay so much, that around the same time in the following year, when it was time for a family trip again, we didn’t think twice before choosing The Herb Farm again. Both the times, we’ve had the best of times! Their USP is their room and their location, for which, I definitely recommend giving this little piece of natural island a must try. Because, overall, the look and feel of this place is a perfect fusion between old-world-charm and modern amenities.
However despite our overall pleasant stay both times, there were a few glitches too.
Things we didn’t like:
Quality of food and limited options : we felt they had used too much baking soda in their preparation (also note that they provide only vegetarian food which wasn’t an issue for us but it could be for those looking for non-vegetarian food on their getaway)
Slow cleaning up or clearing of the dishes in room service
If you’re a light sleeper, the passing by of heavy vehicles (the resort is located right next to the highway) all through the night can be a disturbance.
Though for the packaged experience, these can be easily overlooked for a one or two day getaway, so close to the urban cities of Mumbai and Nashik.
For reservations and inquires you can contact The Herb Farm directly. They’re very prompt with their responses and will answer all your queries patiently.

A Lake View, Sunset and Some Conversations to Remember
In focus for today’s #TravelerTuesday is the lake at Icchapore in Surat, India.
The first time this came into my notice was on a long drive late at night. It was Diwali time and we had been driving through comparatively darker streets, when a sudden brightness caught our attention. There it was, a waterbody around whose entire perimeter, fairy lights had been put up. It made the entire place look straight of someone’s fairytale wedding. Ever since then, I’d wanted to just sit on this lake’s shore and enjoy the beauty it offered. On some searching around I found out the lake was located in Icchapore village in Surat. I got my wish to explore it from nearby, fulfilled sometime last August.
We (my BFF and I) went there right before sunset, dipped our feet in the cool water, and enjoyed the overall rustic feel all around us, with the village people milling around, some ducks swimming in the lake and some even walking around the lake’s edges. As the sun set, we soaked it all in with a heart to heart conversation which we hadn’t been able to have in a long time.
The place is just a twenty minute drive away from my maternal home and I hadn’t paid attention to it ever before; missing out on this little peaceful island of sorts and not having discovered it earlier was my point regret. If in Surat, drop by to visit this picturesque lake which I’m pretty sure Google doesn’t recommend on its ‘places to visit in Surat’
Pro-tip : Wear full sleeves tees/blouse and full length pants because there are mosquitoes buzzing around. Ecosystem comes with a package deal after all.

My Passport Has A New Address!
Every wanderlust’s favorite quote is,
“My goal is to run out of pages in my passport”
Like any other travel lover, my passport is my prized possession. Being a globetrotter, my passport remains something that holds my travel memoirs more than anything else.
Hence, to make it feel more than just a photo identity to be checked in at the airport and get stamped upon, the idea of giving it a more ‘me’ feel had been in my mind since a long time. Also, before anything else, let me just take this moment to confess something about myself.
I’m a bit irresponsible when it comes to taking care of my belongings (guilty as charged!!) And, not wanting to lose something as important as my passport, I thought it needed something where it could be safe .
So, what would be something that protected my beloved passport and also gave it a touch of my personality?
I looked hither and tither on the internet for answers, and along came it, in the platform named Red Moments
Yes, you might have seen ample options and variety available in the personalized passport cover segment, but as I said, I was looking for something that defined ‘me’. So, when I told them a bit about myself, they happily guided me on what kind of charms I could use that suited my personality.
From their more than two dozen charming charms, I knew right away what I wanted. But what made me more happy was the fact that nowhere else had I been able to find the ‘music’, ‘camera’ and ‘flight’ charm with more than one design option.
When I was confused about their placement, they helped me with that too! Do you want to see what it looks like? Here it is then!
Despite taking a long time to decide on the colour, the choosing of the charms and the placement of the charms on the passport holder, once I placed the order, it was on at my doorstep the very next day after the order was placed!
And I even chuckled thinking, “Their delivery time was lesser than the time I took in placing the order” haha!
And once I had unpacked from the passport from its beautiful packaging (which also I must add, had a bit of a ‘personal’ touch. You saw the card with my name on it, right) and held it in my hands, this is what my face looked like!
Want to know a little secret on why I wanted some particular charms? Well, it’s a silly reason but I wanted my passport holder to match my wrist tattoos and now they finally do! (see the airplane and the musical note? Yep, same as that on the passport cover!)
With ‘Flight, Music and Camera’ I’m now ready to explore the world with this new chic passport holder from Red Moments.
What I liked about Red Moments?
Reasonable pricing
Variety of charms
Quick delivery
Helpful support staff
Promptness in response
Tracking service (after placement of order)
They even had the perfect and my favorite shade of blue which I wasn’t able to spot anywhere else. Oh! and they have quite a few good other colour variants too.
Also, besides this product, they have a world of other personalized gifting solutions. I’m pretty sure where my people’s birthdays and anniversary gifts are coming from, from now on!

A Delectable Detour On the Gujarat Coastal Highway
I was visiting Bordi a few years back with some friends and we had put at a cheerful resort just at a walking distance from the beach. However, despite all its splendid services and great rooms, the food provided at the resort seemed a tad costly to all of us. And, since we also wanted to explore more of the local sites and cuisine, we did a little digging around on Google for places to eat, and chanced upon ‘Shiv Panipuri’. It was a little far from where we were putting up, and by the time we had decided on this place to be our dinner destination, it was quite late at night. So, grumbling and a bit skeptical, we made our way through Google Maps. Because its a small town and it was already beyond 9 pm, we had to drive through dark streets and some of us even suggested going back to the resort. However, we didn’t lose hope and within just two more minutes, came outside a place whose bustling activity was in stark contrast to where we had driven from.
As it was a weekend, the place was packed. Luckily, just as we parked our car and made our way to the restaurant, a table got empty and we got a place to sit right away. As all of us were ‘hangry’ by now, a lot of variety of dishes were ordered, including Pav Bhaji, Misal Pav, Dahi Puri, Grill Sandwich and Tawa Pulao. Our taste buds might have been biased because of our hunger, but we found all the dishes to be delicious!
Such was our satisfaction with the food that we ended up having our breakfast (after checking out of the resort, and before making our way back home) here too! This time too, despite not being that hungry, we found the food to be scrumptious.
The taste left behind on my foodie tongue still tingled from the taste of their food and I craved for more. So the next time we went to my hometown (Surat) by road, we took a little detour, headed to Bordi, ate lunch at Shiv Panipuri and took the scenic coastal highway instead of our regular (read boring) route.
The food combined with the scenery appealed so much to us, that now it has become a norm to take this longer route, where we make a pit stop for food at Shiv Panipuri. In total, I have now been to this charming restaurant a total of 6 times, and not even once have I been disappointed with their food or their services.
Besides their yummy food, the restaurant also boats of a little farm right besides their seating area which has a children’s park, a handful of swings to sit and relax and a few wooden charpoy beds where you can lie down beneath the shady trees in the farm.
If driving through the Gujarat highway, do give this offbeat detour a try, for both Shiv Panipuri and the panaromic coastal highway.
Pro-tip: Dahanu is famous for its chickoo, and Shiv Panipuri has some delectable choices in their kulfi section. However, my favorite is their chickoo kulfi.
P.S: The restaurant owners also take up catering orders. So, you can make your special occasions and events more memorable through their yummy food too. Here are their contact details.

A Natural Waterfall in A Secluded Village
In focus for today’s #TravelerTuesday is Ashoka Waterfalls in Vihigaon, Maharashtra, India.
We visited this hidden gem last Saturday with a group of friends, after much debate over where to go.All of us were skeptical about how the place would turn out because none of us had ever heard of it before.Someone suggested going here and a short Google search later we decided on giving it a visit. As we approached closer to our destination, our skepticism grew because not only was there a slight deviation in the route as opposed to what was shown on Google maps, but the roads were badly broken too.The entry to the falls requires a ticket which we need to buy from the village(Vihigaon) representatives. As we parked the car and made our way towards the falls which were nowhere in sight,we’d lost all hope of enjoying our short getaway. The steps leading to the falls were steep and slippery, but as the falls slowly came into view, all our frustration went away, because, boy oh boy! What a sight they were. With the falls creating a foggy surrounding and the droplets making us wet,we fell in love right away.
Two of us ventured into the waters and stayed that way for about half an hour sitting on the stones over the water enjoying getting soaked. After clicking pictures and dipping our feet in the water,
[image error]
we made our way to the top again, sat at one of the handful food stalls, and did what is most enjoyed at such spots!Had tea and Parle G.To add more charm to this,we even had a plate of Maggi. Though the taste must have been the same as anywhere else,it tasted more delicious than normal. The full stretch around the falls is a beautiful sight and a green paradise with a view of the railway line. The overall experience hence, became more enjoyable and memorable because of the surrounding natural beauty.
If in Mumbai/Pune/Nashik and looking for a day trip, this is a must visit during monsoons. The place is yet unexplored, so give it a try, but try to keep it untainted.
.
Pro-tip: Wear comfortable clothing and footwear, and if planning to take a dip, carry an extra pair of clothes. Also, ask someone for the deviation.

A Manmade Reservoir With Ample Natural Beauty
In focus for today’s #TravelerTuesday is Bhavli Dam in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, India.
.
Located in the hilly and green region of Igatpuri, this dam is located near the village Bhavali on Darana River, which is a tributary of Godavari river. This earthfill dam on Bham river is a visual treat and an adventure too! The photo here shows the reservoir behind the falls on this dam. As you make your way towards the falls, don’t stop just there, because that sight in itself is quite beautiful too.
But, if you follow the uphill trek via the downtrodden steps, you’ll reach to this spot (in the picture above and below) which stretches along the horizon, with green water and blue skies, and of course the surrounding greenery too.
Your travel and your monsoon trek needs are satiated all in one at this spot. The way to the falls (by road) is a green stretch too and for nature lovers like me it’s the perfect anticlimax.
I recommend visiting it during the monsoons, because the falls are in full flow and the reservoir is filled too! We went at the end of last year’s monsoon, and hence the falls were a bit shallow, but the reservoir was full nonetheless.
However, because the season had ended, there was no one besides us at the spot and we enjoyed the peace and quiet with just the surrounding beauty to give us company.
Pro-tip : Towards the end of your journey, the Google maps route can be quite confusing, so ask a local about which turn to take to take you to the right spot.

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar: The Indian Scientist Who Spoke About Black Hole Before Stephen Hawking
Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, a name which should be more identifiable then it is, but is sadly known only to a few; that too mostly for the people belonging to the field of science. Long before Stephen Hawking revolutionized the scientific world and black hole became an irrefutable existence, it was S Chandrasekhar, who came up with mathematical proof of the same. It is indeed a matter of great pride for India, that even when we hadn’t attained scientific advancement, a scientific genius like S Chandrasekhar thought of using Einstein’s theory of relativity to understand something unique and unheard of back then.
Despite this, he remains an unknown entity for the common man of India. And for those who do actually know the name of S Chandrasekhar, do not know many other things about this scientific genius. For example, did you know that his uncle was none other than CV Raman? Yes, the very person who was the first Indian ever to win the noble price in Physics. Seems love for science ran in the family!
The young S Chandrasekhar always looked up to his uncle. He even hoped that like his uncle, he too would someday win a Nobel prize. At just 19 years of age, it seemed that he might get a breakthrough too. It was at this age, he did some calculations and came to a mind-boggling conclusion.
By making use of Einstein’s theory of relativity, the young scientific genius proved that a white dwarf, which was much heavier than the sun, could not exist. It was through this proof that he would be able to prove the existence of black holes. But little did the little S Chandrasekhar know then that the path ahead to get this theory accepted, would be a long and tedious one.

Despite being on the way to one of greatest scientific powerhouses of that time, Trinity College, his discovery wasn’t welcomed with open arms, as he had anticipated. He did go on to complete his doctorate from the same college though. However, his discovery about the existence of black holes took a back seat.

After completing his doctorate, he continued his research on the same. It was during this time that Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington started following up with his progress. He seemed to be showing interest in S Chandrasekhar’s work and it felt as if things were finally starting to brighten up with the white dwarf theory. Eddington was at the top of his field then and had single-handedly established the field of astrophysics. Naturally, S Chandrasekhar was elated with the apparent approval of such a stalwart.

This approval even seemed to be moving in a concrete direction. On Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington’s suggestion, S Chandrasekhar was all set to present his results at the Royal Astronomical Society in London. He went ahead and did it too. However, to his horror, right after he had made his presentation, Eddington completely thwarted S Chandrasekhar’s theory. He even went on to call it a mathematical game-play having no basis in reality.
This left S Chandrasekhar completely untrustworthy of Eddington and the scientific rivalry between these two stretched on for years. It was when Gerard Kuiper, a famous an astronomer and an expert in white dwarfs, came out with evidence supporting Chandra’s theory, that Eddington finally admitted his mistake.
However, the damage had already been done. For years, Chandra’s theory remained forgotten and nobody bothered to follow-it up. S Chandrasekhar himself gave up on it and left his life’s research work at Cambridge to join the University of Chicago. He carried out vital work in other fields including transfer (the study of how radiation moves through matter), hydrodynamic, and hydromagnetic stabilities (the study of flow).

It was much later, in 1972, that the first black hole was identified and sighted in the constellation Cygnus and many were to be followed and continue to follow even today. Hence, it was 40 years after his initial discovery, that S Chandrasekhar finally won his battle against Eddington to prove him wrong and himself right. Sadly though, Eddington had already passed away by then.
Finally, he was awarded a Nobel prize for his contributions in the theory of white dwarfs and black holes. He got this in 1983, alongside none other than William A. Fowler.
It was a little late, but from that day till today the world does recognize his contributions. One of these includes having an observatory named after him at the NASA.

And second, the Google Doodle too tributes him by remembering him and his contributions, on his birthday.

Another interesting fact about S Chandrasekhar is that he was born in Lahore (in 1910), which is now a part of Pakistan. The one thing we can all carry away from S Chandrasekhar and his life-story is of perseverance and of believing in oneself.
